Health Promotion
Initially when health promotion was developed it grew and improved the healthy status and health conditions of the public. Health promotion is a relationship between actions, knowledge, attitudes, and behavior and health outcomes from the individual to the societal level. In the past the focus was more on disease prevention and control of communicable disease, when contagious and communicable disease like measles, polio and small pox were present. As government and health care agencies are involved communicable disease are under control and now focus on health promotion. This paper explore the concept of health , health promotion, multiple health models , nursing roles and responsibilities and multiple health models and its approach taken towards health promotion.
According to each individual health is defined and can be affected by many factors. According to World Health Organization (WHO) (World Health Organization, 2003) health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. “Health is a complex state of metabolic efficiency that represents the biological integration associated with physical, mental, and emotional stability of a person. It represents the ability to identify and realize aspiration, satisfy needs and to change and or adapt to its environment. Health is therefore a resource for everyday life.” (Green, 2010)
Health promotion is “the art and science of helping people discover the synergies between their core passions and optimal health, enhancing their motivation to strive for health and supporting them in changing their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health”. (Edelman & Mandle, 2010) Health promotion focuses on the quality of people’s life. It can be accomplished by strengthening an individual’s positive qualities and improving their skills. It can also be accomplished by working together as a community to control the factors and determine the public health and make the rightful changes. As the society has been changing over the years, nursing is now focusing not only in acute care but to community based preventive care.
Today nurses are not only the caregivers but they advocate for patients and their communities. By educating the patient, family and community each patient can receive higher quality, the most appropriate cost effective care. Nurses now have different roles like case managers, consultants, involved in multi-discipline team to ensure and provide an effective care to patients and family. When nurses interact with patients, they can provide education and consult to patient thus increase their understanding and willingness to change. Due to the economic instability in the health care field, health promotion is the ultimate solution thus minimizes the number of hospital stays, rehab facilities and nursing home.
As nurses not only provide competent care and knowledgeable education, health promotion has become a priority issues in today’s world. The focus is more on the individual, family, communities and environment also where they live and work. Under the leadership, creativity and determination nurses can build a healthier group of people in this world. Today’s generation is more knowledgably educated and education has become a major nursing role a d nurses need to be involved in different level of health promotion. Other than education nurses today are involved in passing State Law that involves health and work place. Nurses also support changes that will help clients to choose healthier selections and behavior. “Health promotion focuses more on increase quality and years of healthy life and eliminates health disparities”. (Edelman & Mandle, 2010) The community based nurses are involved in community health center, school nurses, occupational nursing and independent nursing practice.
There are different stages nurse can implement health promotion. Nurse can use health belief method, “this model will help the nurse identify the role of values and belief to the patients, treatment option and outcome, and will assist the nurse in choosing effective educational strategies”. (Edelman & Mandle, 2010).For example, when a nurse check blood pressure, she can discuss about low salt diet, continue taking medication on time and prescribed. When a home nurse visit a patient at home she can educate client by looking at their home situation, like, preventing falls and installing safety measures in rooms.
Health promotion activities are done through three levels of preventive care. (A) Primary prevention: “It is directed towards promoting health and easily recognition thus preventing the development of disease” (Costa, 2013) Example in preventing skin breakdown is (a) early recognition of individual who are at risk, (b) risk assessment,(c) skin assessment, (d) skin care and moisture control. (e) Repositioning patients even if using alternate pressure matters are used. (f) Training staffs how to implement risk assessment and decrease the percentage of pressure ulcer. During primary intervention nurse can use educational materials like videos, postures, and pamphlets. Nurse can also give information’s like social and community outlets where they can teach patients how to remain disease and illness free. Teach patients how to important is to have annual physical exam as a preventive measures and to follow up this the results. (B) Secondary prevention: ranges from “providing screening activities and treating early stages of disease to limiting disability by averting or delaying the consequences of advanced diseases”. (Edelman & Mandle 2010) In some case primary and secondary prevention go hand in hand. Example “aspirin is used as primary prevention when taken on a daily bases as it decreases the chances of cardio vascular diseases (CVD). At the same time in secondary prevention aspirin taken daily decreases the changes of further complication from CVD”.(Parekh, Galloway, Hong, & Wright, 2013) In this case nurse must be knowledgeable to teach patient what level of prevention they are and customize the care for the patient. It focuses on early detection of diseases prompt intervention and health maintenance for patient.
(C) Tertiary prevention: “It begins after an illness is diagnosed and treated to reduce disability and to help rehabilitate patient to a maximum level of function”. (Edelman & Mandle, 2010) Example includes rehabilitation of stroke patient to achieve highest level of function and to teach lifestyle changes. Also including patients to modify risk factors such as control diet, increases exercise. “Patients are more inclined to adopt a healthier lifestyle changes when they are made to feel more accountable for their health and health promotion activities”. (Dedoncker, Lejeune, Dupont, Antoine, & Gremeaux, 2012) Nurses monitoring patients who are undergoing rehabilitation and recovery is very critical.
As nurses we can share our knowledge with everyone that we come across during our daily life. As a health care professional who is promoting health promotion nurses should take care of their own health and should be a role model for others. Nurses need to practice health promotion for their own and community’s wellness. References
