Chapter I. THE PROBLEM

Chapter I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Health is one of the youth’s most valuable possessions but one which many students do not fully appreciate until it is lost. A person may lose all of his excellent health, he has the prime essential for the reconstructions and enjoyment of life. Health in the school is an outgrowth of man’s constant search for more effective and more enjoyable living. To attain this goal, mankind has studied the phenomena at the universe controlled the forces of nature, developed languages, invented various devices and practices. Progress in health has always been associated with advancement in the learning for man’s material needs. When health has been neglected civilization declined. People make the mistake of thinking that being healthy means not having disease. We can be free from disease and yet not be healthy. To be healthy each of us should have vigorous, strong well-trained body, with good posture and a sound, disciplined mind. Our bodies and our minds should be in such condition that we can get the greatest enjoyment out of work and play, that we can be successful in what we undertake and that we can be of the greatest use of our friends and our community. All the knowledge concerning health, especially in the fields of science must be mobilized if we are to safeguard the welfare of mankind. A forward step was taken in this direction when the World Health Organization (WHO) was organized in 1946. The state of well-being of the school child is also influenced by the quality of his physical environment. A safe water supply food sanitation, proper waste disposal, good drainage help prevent gastrointestinal disease including parasitism. The control of his environment through environmental sanitation therefore ensures good nutrition and therefore promotes and maintains good health. For many years the World Health Organization together with other educational group has proclaimed that health in the first objective of education. Society requires that children attend school most physically healthy in body and mind. However all this is not enough. Life must not only be lengthened as well as enriched through the promotion of health. The integrating forces which are yet to be discovered will have to be used with greater favor. Tomorrow’s progress in health will depend on the education and awakening of the public, individually, nationally and internationally while science goes forward in making still greater discoveries.
