One to one communication
I plan to do an activity with a student called Ryan. The activity would be to make paper aeroplanes because I saw it as an excellent opportunity to put my communication skills to the test. My task involves me being in a classroom and sitting down on a table because we need a flat surface to make the paper aeroplanes.
My aim is to interact effectively with Ryan knowing that he has autism and it’s a barrier to communication, but try to overcome the situation. Making paper aeroplanes would develop his fine motor skills too, as he is moving his fingers. In this interaction I hope to gain information and give information too; we could possibly exchange ideas and opinions too.
BARRIERS
Distractions- Ryan has a very short concentration span and gets distracted easily.
Interruptions- as we are going to be in a classroom, so there would be other kids that would be doing what they have given. However, the children’s get frustrated easily and if they aren’t listened to they would interrupt you to get your attention.
Background noise/special needs- as this is a special needs school things can be a bit unpredictable. If a child isn’t having a good day they will most likely start shouting and make noise.
Position
I will be sitting a classroom, sit right next to Ryan on a chair or opposite. The resources that would be required for this activity, is paper and some colours.
I hope I will be very calm and composed at all times and not panic if something unexpected happens.
Skills that I will make sure I use is eye contact because I want Ryan to know that I am talking to him. Try to clear too because Ryan has difficulties learning. Another thing I would make sure is to make my body language and tone non- threatening. Actively listening to the Ryan has to be a must as he gets really irritated.
I am planning to maintain confidentiality by not telling Ryan’s personal information to anybody. Secondly, promote equality and be polite to him regardless of the complexion, religion or gender.

Group communication
I am planning to bake cakes with a group of 3 children’s, Rebecca, Jake, John because I saw it as an excellent opportunity to put my communication skills to the test. I would need to be in a kitchen to be able to bake with the children’s. I would need a flat surface to guide the children’s to make the mixture.
My aim is to show how to work as a team effectively. In this interaction they hope to gain information and give information too; they could possibly exchange ideas and opinions too.
BARRIERS
Distractions- The children’s have a very short concentration span and gets distracted easily.
Interruptions- as we are baking and if the outcome isn’t what they expect, nice cupcake.The children’s can get frustrated and interrupt others.

The kitchen railing, I would be on one side and the children’s would be at the other side listening to my instructions carefully.

Our textbook authors, Meeks, Hait & Paige (2009) describe the importance of self-appraisals and health behavior inventories in teaching students about their practices that will impact their health. After assessing my health through an internet tool available on the Council for Responsible Nutrition wellness campaign webpage, I have reached several conclusions and understanding of my current general health status.
