Strategic Management in Healthcare

...Executive summary Strategic management is the process in which the top management in a company or organization formulates and implements major goals on behalf of the company owners. This is mainly done by consideration of the resources available at the organization’s disposal and the internal and external environmental factors under which the company exists and competes with other companies (Cole, 1997). For the healthcare providers that are facing financial challenges in the sector, consolidation and cooperation seems to the new way out. Various healthcare providers throughout New Yolk city are merging with other healthcare providers so as to ensure that they survive the harsh economic times. However consolidation was not only for the hospitals but physicians and other groups within the healthcare sector were also expected to merge in order to survive ('market overview', 2013). Others are also opting for other means to ensure accountability in the sector. These measures include bundled payment programs and patient-centered medical homes. Other large healthcare facilities are also shifting from inpatient health services to ambulatory care facilities so as to diversify their services and stay ahead of competition. Due to the introduction of New Yolk state’s health insurance exchange, approximately 1 million state residents were expected to enroll. However by early December 2013 approximately 90,000 residents had enrolled. This was a clear indication of the positivity healthy insurance...

Operations Management & Healthcare

...Operations Management and Healthcare Nicholas Drzycimski Operations Management SCMS 3510-003 University Of Memphis November 9, 2015 Introduction Most people would agree that access to healthcare is an issue with definite room to improve; there are constant demands from both taxpayers and the society for change. Organizations which provide healthcare are faced with economic limitations and constraints, long waiting times and queues of patients. Healthcare organizations are also affected by strict budgets that prevent them from procuring additional resources. One solution to combat all three of these constraints simultaneously would be to implement ideas and concepts from the Operations Management field of business. The most effective concept would likely be Lean production, that is, limiting as much waste as possible while using what resources are on hand to their most effective state possible. Of course, this is a very difficult goal to achieve when dealing with the unpredictability of day-to-day operations at a hospital, but measures can and should be taken to limit as much waste as possible and maximize efficiency of resources used. While new ways to implement more ideas and concepts of Operations Management into the healthcare industry are constantly being researched, there are aspects and tasks that are performed in a Hospital that can be considered the operations of a hospital. The goal of this paper is to explain some of these operations of a hospital...

Based on past experiences, the health care industry is on the brink of an inevitable change. Future Challenges for Healthcare Management

...Future Challenges for Health Care Management The scope of health care management encompasses administrating how services get delivered to patients, persons delivering services, locations to which services get delivered, and the financing of all involved procedures. In these, institutions like nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, public hospitals, and private clinics get involved. At the same time, groups of service providers and associations play instrumental roles in controlling the quality of services and procedures of implementation (Gururajan, 2012). Thus, health care management encompasses the organization and administration of individual physicians, associations, involved institutions, and control of funds. Quintessentially, the challenges that affect the health care industry concern the functionality of one of these elements. It is worth noting that the industry has continuously faced various challenges related to diseases, aging, health care insurance, and human resource limitations (Benington, 2014). The future challenges for health care management include securing adequate finances for health care operations, training adequate human resources, managing an increasingly aging population of patients, and controlling emerging chronic diseases. Despite the fact that most world economies have grown substantially, health care sectors have remained underfinanced across the world. Perhaps, the nature of services in this sector requires large recurrent amounts of money to...

Functions of Management in Healthcare

...RUNNING HEAD: FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT IN HEALTHCARE Mindy Guerrero HealthCare Management/ HCS 325 Professor Sharon Williams June 15, 2015 FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT IN HEALTHCARE 1 The four functions of management in a health care setting are planning, leading, organizing, and controlling.  These functions provide the basis for the common model used in most health care management training programs.  Some manuals include additional functions, for example, financial controls or staffing, but the universal functions are those specified.  Each involves a key component in the operations of an organization, medical or otherwise.  The first function is planning.  It is a core responsibility of management to establish institutional goals and strategies for meeting those goals.  Once the institutional goals and strategies are established, management then breaks the organization down into teams, departments or individual roles and responsibilities.  The bottom line, however, is that the manager is responsible for setting the organization on the desired path, ensuring that each component is incorporated into the short and long-term strategies for achieving objectives. The second function is organization.  Organizing for the successful conduct of operations follows directly from the function of planning.  While planning sets objectives and strategies, however, organizing involves the design and implementation of the...

Healthcare Management

...Roles and Functions of the Healthcare Manager Jenelle Caldeira HCS/325 March 24, 2014 Kathrine Crawford Roles and Functions of the Healthcare Manager In the world of healthcare, it’s essential that all managers demonstrate strong leadership skills with not only co-workers but subordinates as well. Planning and organizing are right behind leadership because in order to lead, you must know who, what and where your employees are and what their role is in the organization to hold them accountable and offer praise for a job well done when necessary. I believe the best management model is the Path-Goal management model because this style advises managers to use leadership styles that complement the needs of the situation by either Directive Leadership, Supportive, Achievement-Oriented, or Participative Leadership (). When managing an organization as complex as healthcare, you will be faced with many different situations and instances where you will need to adjust and change not only your management approach, but also your delegation technique to fit the situation and help the patient or client to the fullest extent at all times. The most important role for a health care manager is leadership. Having strong, clear, defined leadership skills through leading by example and holding associates accountable at the same time. A great leader has the ability to bring out the best in others, and by doing so, it will create a team and organization of highly qualified, motivated team...

...the changes will benefit them and how it will affect their work daily. Managers within an organization that are seeking change need to bring the idea to their employees or management team to receive etiquette feedback. In this paper I will discuss Managers role and responsibility how manager successfully handle change. Managers know that any kind of changes whether it is new ideas, new technology or new programs can create concerns and in most cases resistance. Employees have many of their own reason for resisting changes within the organization. A good reason could be that many employees gain accustomed to the companies way of doing things and management come in with new approaches. These new approaches are expected to fall in line with the employees but this does cause the wall of resistance and this wall can become strong. Many employees look forward to changes benefiting them in ways so it is important that management empower people to agree and make changes in ways that would works for them as employee. Mangers will never face a situation where there are no problems with bringing in changes. Healthcare Management and Leadership

...Healthcare management and leadership Kerry A. Reyman HCS/325 August 27, 2014 Charlotte Stoudmire Healthcare management and leadership Managing employees and leading employees can be two in the same but often managers are not leaders. My view is that leaders are born and not taught. [In India, M.K. Gandhi inspired millions of people to fight for their rights, and he walked shoulder to shoulder with them so India could achieve independence in 1947. His vision became everyone’s dream and ensured that the country’s push for independence was unstoppable. The world needs leaders like him who can think beyond problems, have a vision, and inspire people to convert challenges into opportunities, a step at a time (Nayar, 2013).] In the military there are many requirements such as time in your position, time in the military, schools and physical fitness. I have said more times than I can count that just because you can run two miles in 13 minutes does not qualify a person to lead soldiers into combat. That statement can be changed slightly for the healthcare industry and will be applicable. Just because a person has a degree or certificate, does not mean that they are qualified to lead employees in a hospital environment. A person can be an effect manager and possess the ability to lead. Only the managers with the ability to influence as well will make the company, their subordinates and themselves a thriving success. In conclusion, having the ability and knowledge to lead and...
