...Online Participation Leading to Successful Students and Healthy Learning Communities Amanda Grand Canyon University: UNV 501 April 8, 2014 Online Participation Leads to Successful Students and Healthy Learning Communities Enrollment for online courses is climbing but the input from participants is not keeping up. For years, many have stated that active participation and becoming a part of the learning community in any educational setting is crucial, especially online, when it comes to successful completion. Participation is beneficial to the student, to the students’ grades, and to the learning community as a whole. The authors sought after evidence to show, “the importance of student online visibility apparent in the quantity and quality of participation” (Nagel, Blignaut, & Cronjé, 2009, 38). The study was conducted on a computer-integrated education Masters course that was 8 weeks long (Nagel et al., 2009). The course was presented fully online and consisted of students of varying age ranges. Reaserchers then chose a mixed methodology while conducting this research. This choice allowed them to explore various aspects within the course such as, students’ posts, online quizes, discusion posts, and exmination essays (Nagel et al., 2009). Many factors, for example, the amount of times participants accessed the course and discussions played a role in course completion and integration into the learing community (Nagel et al., 2009). Those who rarely were visible...

...A healthy community is a place where people can thrive both physically and socially, reaching their full potential. In these communities health promotion is adopted, and every member works at maintaining a healthy lifestyle free from injury, illness, and disease. These communities improve the quality of life of their inhabitants by providing its members with healthy, available, accessible, and affordable options. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). These communities invest “in proven prevention programs and policy changes that make it easier to make healthier choices, like smoke-free restaurants and workplaces, affordable access to fresh healthy foods, and safe places to be active in neighborhoods and communities.” (HealthySD.gov, 2010). Healthy communities have a lot in common. These communities “embrace the belief that health is more than merely an absence of disease; [and that] it includes those elements that enable people to maintain a high quality of life and productivity.” (HealthySD.gov, 2010). These communities are continuously evolving to meet the needs of their inhabitants and provide the healthiest lifestyle possible. They provide a healthy environment including; clean air, proper sanitation, clean water, land maintained, education, and health promotion. There are many different views on what the ideal healthy community is and how to obtain it. If I was providing care to a community that did not match my idea of a healthy community, I would voice...

...My idea of a healthy community is a community in which people take care of one another by reaching out, making sure that those around them have what they need to get by, and where those who have more or are well do more to help those in need. By definition, “A healthy community is one in which residents are happy with their choice of location and which exhibits characteristics that would draw others to the location” (Maurer 394) Going on to state that members of these healthy communities are also functional for their age, the community is safe, the air is clean, the water is safe to drink, there are good schools, the people in general are well taken care of by the area around them (Maurer 394) If I felt that my idea of a healthy community was in matching my communities definition of a healthy community I would provide care to my community by making a larger effort to become involved in my communities legislative processes and maintaining and active influence on the politics in my area. By voting, being a regular member of local political committees, and attending legislative day’s for nurses I would make sure my voice was heard in a way that would benefit those needing holistic and comprehensive care in my community. ...My idea of a healthy community would be that of a place where health promotion is pushed by creating a suitable environment for the wellness of everyone. There is much that can be done to create healthy communities. Communities that support people in making healthy choices help prevent chronic diseases and the complications that can result from them. Public health works with a variety of partners to create healthy communities including transportation planners, city planners and land use experts because the environments where we live, work, play, learn and connect with services influence our physical and mental health ("Health," 2012). A healthy community is one where people have good physical and emotional health. But this is more than just the absence of illness. A healthy community promotes well-being and offers a high quality of life. It needs to have strong social networks that can offer mutual support opportunities, facilitates social exchange, and the sharing of skills, resources, and assets. In addition to social networks, it also needs to have physical assets, such as buildings, parks, commercial, and other public spaces that are safe, clean, and comfortable, and provide opportunities for interaction and exchange. The physical assets of the community are aesthetically pleasing and offer the community a sense of identity The community should be free of any sort of pollution, which means that everyone should have access to clean air to...

...Base on the expert committee report on community health nursing of the World Health Organization “A community is a social group determined by the geographic boundaries and/ or common values and interests. Its members know and interact with one another. It functions within a particular social structure and exhibits and creates norms, values and social institutions” World Health Organization (WHO), 1974, p.7). However, the direct, hands-on clinical nursing care delivered to individuals or families in a community setting as a whole is the target and the intended of the nursing practice in community health. Community health on the other hand according to the reference book is the meeting of collective needs by identifying problems and managing behaviors within the community itself and between the community and the larger society. It emphasizes the process dimension and also includes the dimensions of status and structure (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). The approach of looking at the care of the client in all dimension guides the nurse to think upstream and identify risks that could be prevented. The author’s subjective perspective is that it is easier said than done, one being that there is a popular misconception that by providing health care makes a healthy population in my opinion. Another point to consider is that we are caring for a culturally diverse population. Caring for the culturally diverse groups has been a focus of nursing from its beginning. As early as 1893, under...

...profit. There are other firms that involve in the industry of frozen food, so McCain is not the only producer of chips, rather it competes with other firms to win the largest portion of market. In addition, the entry or exit from this market is not restricted. As a result, we can conclude that McCain is a competitive monopolist as it seeks to take control over this industry. In 2005, a challenging environmental factor was facing McCain. The concerns about obesity were rising dramatically, especially in children, as over 22 million children under the age of 5 and around 155 million school-age children worldwide were severely overweight.¹ McCain's view is that its chips can and do play a role in a healthy balanced diet and it is continually finding ways to ensure that its products are as healthy as possible, for example, McCain dictates product standards to the potato growers that supply them, and it may choose to have more vertical control (i.e., direct ownership) over the processing, packaging, and distribution stages of the supply chain for their french-fries because these practices may entail sophisticated production techniques that are best performed in-house.² In response to the challenge, McCain made a SLEPT analysis to study the social, legal, economic, political and technological factors that affect the company business, and as a result they made the following changes and adaptations: 1. Quantities usage reduction of salt and oil. 2. Usage of sunflower oil instead...

It is universally acknowledged that we can use a smart phone not only chat or text with others but also play games, read books, listen to the music, surf on the internet. Sometimes we can even say that smart phone is a small computer. Obviously, we use smart phone as an entertainment tool. Firstly, smart phone can be used as an audio player. It can provide you the music whenever you want , like everyday in the metro, music is necessary for me. Secondly, a smart phone sometimes can be instead of e-book. In addition, downloading books in phones instead of buying books in stores also means that you are an environmentally friendly person. Simultaneously, many games are free to access if you are tired from work or study. Finally, smart phones can be used in different ways so in my opinion, using a smart phone as an entertainment tool can make our life becomes simple and colorful. Sometimes I feel sudden blackouts when working under stress full situations. I have been frequent to clinics due to my poor health. These all problems not related to my family medical history. ...McDonald’s and Obesity Memo Chutian Chen MBA 603 03/22/2016 Q1: What McDonald’s need to respond is to change the traditional image. When Ronald McDonald represents the unhealthy lifestyle, people will avoid eating them. I think there is no need to eliminate Ronald McDonald in its ads, because Ronald McDonald is a symbol of McDonald’s. What they need to do is to take steps to change people’s thought of McDonald. If in ads, Ronald McDonald sell healthy salad or fruit to children, people will change their mind when think about McDonald’s. Q2: So, for fast-food companies, they only have one choice between pay 1.5% tax on their ad budgets and add health messages to their commercials. That’s a great way to solve the dilemma between the growing in food market and the rising of obesity. The first advantage of the law is the food company have to pay something to help government solving the obesity problem. Second, the law can force food company focus more on the obesity problem, and give them a chance to change their stereotyped image in public. For McDonald, I highly recommend them adding health messages to their commercials. As we all know that, for the most of giant food companies, ad budget is a large portion in their annual budget. 1.5% tax on their ad budgets can be an unaffordable burden for them. If McDonald choose adding health messages to their commercials, they will gain many benefits. First, McDonald has a very specific segmentation, so the ad with health messages...

Environmental health: I keep my house clean and organized so I am environmentally healthy, and it also makes me feel happier. Emotional health: I talk about my issues that are concerning me with someone before they build up inside and cause stress in my life. Spiritual health: I read the bible and stay connected with my higher power at all times. Part 2 In approximately 125 to 200 words, describe health and wellness in your own words using the ideas and concepts for each of the six dimensions of health. To me health and wellness is a variety of different aspects in my life. These things combined together make up my health and wellness. Having good physical health means to me just simply doing what I can to try in stay active. This might not be enough but it is what I feel I am able to maintain on a daily basis. As well as being connected to other people provides social structure in my life, and helps prevent feelings of loneliness, and isolation. Reading is also another aspect of my daily attempts to stay healthy. I chose a book that interests me, and read at least one chapter every night before bed. Keeping my home and life clean and organized allows me to prevent illness...

...My idea of a healthy community is one where there are low crime rates and good physical and emotional health. A healthy community should promote well-being of its inhabitants in various ways such as: strong social networks, clean water, pollution-free air, affordable quality healthcare, and great schools. A healthy community is one that promotes well-being by encouraging its residents to screen for illnesses for prevention to avoid the burden of chronic disease. Education campaign should be organized to sensitize people about the most common illnesses and educate them on how to avoid them to achieve a better life. Resident should be aware of resources available to them in their community, allowing them to feel safe. In my opinion, there is a strong relationship between healthy people and strong communities. I consider the community I live in – Phoenix, Arizona - a fairly healthy community overall, compared to most. There has been an improvement in air quality since the ban of smoking in all public areas about five years ago. The community offers a multitude of hospitals and great schools districts at walking distance for residents of each community. There is also a variety of public parks and recreation areas accessible to the general public at no cost of a very small fee. But more needs to be done when it comes to the general health of the residents of Phoenix: obesity continues to be a huge problem in my community. According to Men’s Fitness Magazine (mensfitness.com, 2012)...

...project, I came to the realization that I have not taken the time to enjoy what we have around us. By conducting this windshield survey, I was able to understand why most of the neighbors that live in this area have stayed through the years. Some of the areas that would be covered in this document are the family’s community and their environment, as well as the diversity in community. I will also be defining the following terms; community, community health, community as client, and partnerships. Family’s Community and Environment A community can be defined as the interaction of individuals in a social network, usually focused in a defined territory according to our textbook (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, p.190). When interviewing the Doe’s family, it was evident the closeness of their community. Mr. Doe was able to point out each neighbor in the street he lives on and how long they have been living in the community. The pride of ownership is apparent by how the streets are free of clutter, trash and the maintenance of a their front yards. Although the neighborhood has changed through the years, the most visible changed one can see is the aging of members of the community. The houses were built in the 1940s and 1950s and most owners still live in their properties and are now retired. Fruitridge manor is adjacent to little Saigon and the Vietnamese influence is apparent by the numerous of international market stores and Vietnamese restaurants that surround this neighborhood...

...express some concern about my community and hopefully some insight as to how we can fix the epidemic of health and issues in our local community. Health promotion programs often lack a clearly specified theoretical foundation or are based on narrowly conceived conceptual models. For example, lifestyle modification programs typically emphasize individually focused behavior change strategies, while neglecting the environmental underpinnings of health and illness (Stokols, 1994). The ecological approach focuses on the population-level and individual level determinants of health and intervention. It has also been said that a population can achieve long-term health improvements when people become involved in their community and work together to effect change (Hanson, 1998-89). After looking at the Kaiser Permanente Community Health Initiative video it opened up my eyes. The video showed how certain communities are using a technology called Photovoice. It helps different members of the community show others what is happening there with hopefulness that it will get the messages reached out to others. It really helps by showing the legislatures and congressmen in their area what is going on in the communities around them. It’s a great tool that can promote safety and awareness. I really loved the fact that there are people out there that really want to help the communities where they live and how working together can turn their community into a healthy and safe place to be. Where...
