...There is a distinct difference between options and choices. Options are things and choices are decisions based on available options. Radley Balko argues that there is an absence of moral obligation with regards to unhealthy people and their nutritional choices. However, if healthy food options at an affordable cost aren’t offered to general society or easily accessible, then what decisions do they truly have between their available options. Even though adopting unhealthy eating habits is a personal choice for some, affordable and accessible healthy food alternatives are essential to making conscientious nutrition choices. Balko’s position should be challenged because of the lack of nutritional equality in our society. In most cases, people...

...E. Honey EN1420 Project November 25, 2014 All Food Sales in Schools Should Offer Healthier Options (Should Junk Food be Banned in Schools ?) Upon hearing these topics, one may be inclined to label me as: 1) a health nut, 2) a physical fitness nazi, or 3) possibly a kid hater. These topics are usually discussed with emphasis on childhood obesity. But there are more ominous reasons other than being overweight which are rarely discussed. The reason I am a proponent of only providing healthy food options in schools is because today’s children are at a disadvantage that begins at the moment of their conception, when compared to previous generations. This disadvantage manifests itself in the form of toxins passed from the mother to the fetus via the umbilical cord. The toxins are industrial chemicals, pollutants, and pesticides (Grisanti). Add junk food (food items that have little nutritional value and excessive amounts of potentially harmful ingredients) supplied by the mother’s diet and the results can be devastating. Society should take some responsibility in trying to purge some of these toxins from their bodies while they are still young and have not yet started to feed their selves with food items known to cause obesity. One way to attempt this would be to only provide healthy food options in schools. If this responsibility is left to the children, budget conscious school administrators or the food industry, then the situation may never improve. Schools...

...potential for learning. Schools are in a position to play an important role in ensuring that healthy eating patterns are promoted through classroom nutrition education coordinated with the promotion and the availability of healthy food choices. Establishment of a nutrition policy within the Waterloo Catholic District Secondary School system will facilitate the schools in achieving the following goals: Promote an environment that encourages and supports the development and maintenance of healthy eating habits. Provide standards/guidelines to ensure a variety of nutritious foods and beverages are available to students and staff that will enable them to make healthy food choices. This includes: cafeteria, vending machines, school tuck shops/stores, fundraising events, and refreshments served at celebrations and meetings. 2.0 RATIONALE The purpose of the nutrition policy is to ensure that a variety of nutritious foods and beverages are promoted and provided to students and staff. The environment is one of the most important indicators determining our success in making healthy food choices. Our goal is to create this healthy environment in all the secondary schools of the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. By reducing the quantity of foods of minimal nutritional value and calorie dense beverages and increasing the availability of foods of maximum or moderate nutritional value, we model healthy behaviour and avoid sending students and staff mixed messages. This policy ensures a...

...displays nutrition facts on all of there food items. That was not always the case. Prior to the movie super size me, and the ensuing lawsuits, McDonalds would offer consumers the option to upgrade their already unhealthy meals to a even larger potion known as super size. This ignored consumer rights because the establishment did not warn customers that they would be consuming nearly half of there daily calories just by having fries. Appropriately, McDonalds no longer tries to gear people towards the unhealthy option of super size and displays nutrition information on all of its products. Therefore it is fitting to state that the major rights of consumers have not always been upheld at McDonalds, but they are taking steps in the right directions. At present, they are making phenomenal strides toward a healthier menu. McDonald's started giving customers the option of choosing apple slices and milk as part of the Happy Meal package. They also began packaging 100-calorie versions of Oreos, Wheat Thins and other healthy treats. Also McDonalds is currently working on removing trans fats from their food. More and more McDonalds is taking gradual steps to making the American consumer more responsible for what they put in their own mouths. Soon, it is very likely that people will no longer be able to blame corporations like McDonalds for obesity because there will be healthy options and people will be informed. Moreover, Some believe that large food corporations, like McDonalds, should claim...

...Food Poverty in America What is causing America’s obesity epidemic? Why is it so difficult for the majority of people in the U.S.A to eat healthy diets? Compare America to almost any other country and it is painfully clear that we have an overabundance of food: Americans eat 815 billion calories of food each day and throw out 200,000 tons of it daily (“Consumption”). However, it is commonly thought that people should have the self-control and knowledge necessary to winnow through the plenty and make good choices. Nutritional facts are readily available and no one could possibly think fast-food is good for them, could they? And yet, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that 34.9% of all Americans are clinically obese and that...

...diabetes, and cancer. Can a tax on sugar and fat laden “junk” foods curb over-consumption? This works in theory, but in reality there are solid reasons why this tax won’t work. There are a large number of Americans that live in “food deserts” with limited access to healthy foods. For an obese person to make wise food choices, they must first value their health. Raising the price of unhealthy foods won’t instill value on health. One of the main reasons for the growing number of overweight Americans is the lack of exercise; a fat tax doesn’t address this problem. According to the Department of Agriculture, Food Deserts are defined as urban neighborhoods and rural towns without ready access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food. Instead of supermarkets and grocery stores, these communities may have no food access. In a food desert, residents are often served only by fast food restaurants and convenience stores that offer few healthy, affordable food options. For example, in Chicago, more than 500,000 residents live in food deserts, and an additional 400,000 live in neighborhoods with a preponderance of Hammond 2 fast food restaurants and no grocery stores nearby. Most of these people are low income. A food tax in these food deserts would increase the price of the only food available. The foods targeted are a large part of the food budget for low-income people, raising the prices on these foods would further impoverish an already poor demographic. Instead...

...Food, and access to it, is a determinant of health and well-being. The USDA defines a food desert as, “parts of the country vapid of fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy whole foods, usually found in impoverished areas” ("USDA Defines Food Deserts", 2011). Food deserts are often found in rural, minority, and low-income areas because they lack large, retail food markets and have a higher number of convenience stores, where healthy foods are less available. Families and individuals living in a geographic area where residents experience barriers to accessing healthy foods, including, both physical and economic obstacles can face greater risk for adverse health outcomes ("Access to Healthy Food and Why it Matters", 2013). The burden of food...

...America’s Relationship with Food American culture has evolved over time with respect to food. Major developments have come by in families within America as several revolutions took place.Consequently, the lifestyle of citizens have transformed from the basic to a more sophisticated one. In the early days, to take food rich in proteins was the ideal culture among the people. The government and media made emphasis on including more proteins in the diet to provide energy for work (Allen, 924-932). A majority of the male population were working hard labour jobs. Then came the industrial revolution where machines replaced human labour at work. Thus, more food was processed and canned for consumption after many days. Later, a research done reported that 65% of the population in America was employed in the active labour force. Consequently, less time was available for a family member to prepare quality food since an individual spent averagely 30 mins to prepare a family meal (Allen, 924-932). Invention of machines and other easily available food options promoted eating processed foods to meet the stringent working hours. Thus, as David says it in his essay “Don’t blame the eater” eating habits changed for worse. In fact in his essay he states ‘then as now, these were the only available options for an American kid to get an affordable meal. By age 15, I had packed 212 pounds of torpid teenage tallow on my once lanky 5-foot-10 frame’, David insinuates that food processing firms have...
