The Healthy People 2020 was launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in 2010 encompassing 1,200 objectives under 42 topics (CDC, 2011). Healthy People 2020 had four over-reaching goals to: to eliminate preventable disease and premature death, to achieve true health equity and eliminate disparities to promote healthy development across the life stages, and create social and physical environments that promote good health for all (2011). It also aims to attain high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death (2011). The best way to do so is through a broad social determinant approach that reconciles health in all aspects so that the healthy choice is an easy choice (Healthy People …show more content…
The Healthy People Website is an extremely useful tool and a splendid addition to Healthy People 2020; it is designed for everyday use for community members in mind where they can learn more about the vision, mission, overarching goals, health measures, and determinants of health. Other media outlets to help promote Healthy People 2020 are social media platforms such as Linkedin and Twitter. Moreover, the panelists described the fact that Public Health cannot do it alone, as it requires all aspects of the government on a federal and state level to create a change. An example used is described by Rita Scardaci in Sonoma County in Northern California where a program called Network of Care for Healthy Communities serves as a local delivery platform of information. In Sonoma, reduction of tobacco use is a main focus and therefore, the passion garners interest and support from the Healthy People 2020 to be able to monitor and track how Sonoma County is doing with tobacco cessation targets (Healthy People 2020, 2012).
