...Introduction On April 19, 2008, Walter A. Walsh, Supply Management Manager for Heartland & Company, met with one of his buyers, Olivia Newcomb, in his office. They discussed her Heartland & Company cost reduction goals for bearing #B02326620. After the meeting Mr. Walsh began wondering if changes should be made to the way suppliers were being evaluated, if price premiums should be paid to suppliers for performing at a higher level and how business should be allocated among suppliers performing at different levels. These were issues needing further consideration. Founded in 1875, Heartland & Company is one of the U.S.’s oldest industrial organizations. It manufactures agricultural and construction equipment as well as commercial and consumer lawn care equipment. Today, Heartland & Company does business in over 100 countries and had sales in excess of U.S. $12 billion in 2007. Bearings2 Bearings are devices that allow constrained relative rotation or linear movement between two parts. The purpose of bearings is to allow motion with a minimum of friction. Friction creates heat and wear of adjoining parts. Bearings are commonly found in furniture drawers, all types of engines and at the intersection of moving mechanical parts. An example of primitive bearings is the use of tree trunks laid down under heavy stones in prehistoric times. Two common types of bearing include roller (cylindrical roller) bearings and ball (spherical roller) bearings. Bearings can range...

...Bruce Springsteen “Born in the U.S.A” album cover Bruce Springsteen album "Born in the USA" is written in a heartland rock style and it is not only an entertaining music but has social purpose. Songs are touching and defending a rural and blue- collar values. In the 70's and 80's, Bruce Springsteen’s music spoke to the masses, but it was particularly targeted to the working class; If the American Dream could be reached by working hard and watching all of your dreams comes true, Springsteen showed that, people who spend their lives in the pursuit of happiness, but never quite get there. The cover of the album “born in the U.S.A” - a close-up of a rear Springsteen in front of an American flag, became one of the most recognizable images in American popular culture and it represents the everyday American. Exploring the image and its meanings, we can see the connection of the two main images: flag and body, which relates to the concept of masculinity, patriotism. The cover of the album captures what this album is about. If the title didn't already reveal it, this is an album about an American man. The color scheme is red, white and blue. The background features the stripes of the American flag. In the foreground is Bruce in the all-American uniform: blue jeans, a white tee shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and a worn-down red baseball cap hanging out of his back pocket. The image on the cover of the album represents a working American man from any place. The flag on the background...

...“Pink Houses” and the American Dream What is the American Dream? Is the American Dream to go from having nothing to building an empire? Could the American Dream be to live a simple life? To some people the American Dream could be to simply live in a country where they have freedoms unlike those in many other countries. John Mellencamp’s “Pink Houses” is his interpretation of the American Dream. The vast majority of people have different interpretations of the American Dream. Mellencamp’s song “Pink Houses,” includes lyrics such as “Cause they told me when I was younger said boy, you’re gonna be president.” ("JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP LYRICS") This verse represents an American parent expressing a high expectation for their son to achieve in life. Some people think that to achieve the American Dream, one must reach for the stars; such as, striking it rich or owning a multi-billion dollar corporation. Other people however, think in a more modest way such as in the verse “There’s a black man with a black cat livin’ in a black neighborhood, he’s got an interstate runnin’ through his front yard you know he thinks he’s got it so good.” ("JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP LYRICS") This lyric references the mindset that as long as people are living free and happy, it does not matter how much they have but rather what they have. History shows that the American Dream originally held different meanings than it does today. Yesterday the American Dream meant that by living in America, a man could...

...Soundtrack of my Life Throughout my life I have heard many songs and many of them have remained with me in my memories. I think the main artists I remember from my childhood are Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Michael Jackson. “Born in the USA” from Bruce Springsteen is the main one because this was the only song that my dad and I could agree on. His favorite song was Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” which at that time I highly disliked; I have learned to like it with time now. And then for Michael Jackson, he had many songs that I remember, but I think “Bad” sticks out the most to me. Everytime I think of these songs I just think of being a child, and how I had no worries then, it seemed like such a peaceful world. As I got older I realized there is a lot kids don’t realize. At the time I really wasn’t listening to the same music as the so-called popular kids, I more listened to what my parents listened to, which I think may have influenced me to not want to be like the other kids and listen to certain music or do certain things just to “fit in” with them. As for my adolescence, I listened to many different genres of music. I never really was one that just listened to one type of music. I was always open to new things, except country and classical music. I wanted nothing to do with those in my adolescence. Some of the main artists I can think of are: Alice in Chains, Metallica, Nirvana, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, oldies and I also liked most dance/bass cds. When I was...

...How to Avoid Plagiarism Trent R. Hartzler Heartland Community College Abstract Plagiarism is a common problem in high schools, universities, and everyday life. The object of this paper is to help students of all ages understand how to avoid accidental plagiarism. The biggest mistake that students make when writing a paper, is taking information that isn’t their own, using it in a non-credible way in their paper. Most students don’t understand the proper way to cite information within their paper. This idea is called proper attribution. The original maker of the quote or idea you are using deserves to be credited within your own work. Although a student may be paraphrasing, this does not mean a source doesn’t have to be credited. To avoid accidental plagiarism, a student must understand how to properly site credible information. To better understand how to properly site information, use the purdue owl on the internet to show how to site sources. It gives thorough examples of all different types of citations. Another way to avoid accidental plagiarism is to put your paper into a plagiarism checker such as grammarly. Grammarly is a website designed to have papers uploaded to check for plagiarism. Students can easily upload their paper, and grammarly is synced with a web database of information to check for any types of plagiarism. Using these two methods will help decrease the percentage of plagiarism tremendously. Plagiarism is a huge problem in today’s society. The more...

...Professor: John Theodore November 22, 2011 Heartland Payment Systems is known for fair, fully disclosed pricing and empowering merchants who like to take control of payments processing costs. More than 11 million transactions are processed daily with over $80 billion transactions a year, making Heartland the 5th largest payment processor in the United States and 9th in the world (Heartland, 2011). However, a data breach occurred last year in 2010 for Heartland which compromised tens of millions of credit and debit card transactions. Such figures make the Heartland incident one of the largest data breaches ever reported. In this paper I will analyze Heartland’s business, marketing, and security strategies and their response to this security breach as well as propose new methods of security to prevent future occurrences. Heartland is available to merchants 24/7 with a full customer support team. Additionally, their E3 end-to-end encryption solution is designed to protect cardholder data throughout the lifecycle of a payments transaction which helps business owners improve data security and reduce the cost of PCI compliance. Heartland uses end-to-end encryption because other technologies such as point-to-point encryption do not protect the data after the card is authenticated which leaves payment account data vulnerable to thieves who can use the data for fraudulent activity that does not require a card to be present. Heartland states on their website that only encryption technologies...

...Conceptualizing a Business Chris Wright BUS/475 February 23, 2014 Diane Deaton Heartland Residential Design is a custom home design company, designing homes for both builders and individuals in the Kansas City, metro area. There is a great need for such services in the metro area due to the home building industry crashing in 2009. Many home design companies that were in the area along with other industry professionals including builders and construction suppliers did not survive the crash. Now that the industry is bouncing back and new housing starts are at their highest since 2009, the opportunity for a business that designs custom home plans seems to be at its greatest, with opportunity growing as the housing industry begins its re-growth. Mission Statement: Heartland Design will define the way homes are designed for the future providing plans to customers which are green friendly energy efficient homes, drawn to utilize construction materials while reducing waste during construction, designed to meet all current codes, and most importantly, drawn to the likes and specifications of the customer at a reasonable cost and in a timely manner. A very important factor in the development of Heartland Residential Design and where it stands out among competitors is in the pricing of the provided services to customers and turn- around time for completed ready to build custom home plans. Most customers believe they must seek out an architect to have a home designed...

...The literature of changing people’s opinions also known as the media is consistently portraying the wrong message, with a lack of detail to support the ideas. The author is in full control of manipulating the readers/viewers thoughts. Each author uses different writing style, which then leads to opinions rather than conveying the truthful story . There news provides biased stories to the author’s opinions, but in reality, it should focus more on real world problems, rather than opinions . The media always contains more than one side of the story. The informal style of writing describes the colloquialism and similarity of opinion from two different authors that focus on the same topic to reflect the solemnity and pessimism of this revolutionized era. The supporting texts are attestable, focused, and structured on the problem. Bob Weber’s “Air pollution northeast of Edmonton as bad as world’s largest cities: study ” and Andrew Nikiforuk’s “Alberta’s Oil Legacy: Bad Air and Rare Cancers” are examples of this devious colloquial style portrayed by the media. While Bob Weber and Andrew Nikiforuk share a humane attitude with respect to the study of Alberta’s air pollutants, Nikiforuk is more critical of the detail of exemplifying the seriousness of the problem. Through his description of subsidiary secondary characters , his affective writing style and his manipulative headlines/images , it is clear that Nikiforuk fully comprehends the importance of reducing the air pollutants...

...calculation sheet inclosed to my Email. 2. Heartland’s ratios evaluation The current and quick ratios measure the ability of the firm to easy liquidize - in both measures Heartland is significantly lower than the industry average, and so this may be a problem. The inventory, asset, and A/R turnover measures collectively reflect how well the firm is utilizing its assets. Heartland is managing it inventory and receivables better than the industry average, and asset turnover (the collective measure) is the same as the industry average. Financial leverage is measured with the Debt/equity ratio and times interest earned measure. Heartland relies more heavily on debt (rather than equity) and as a result is suffering a low times interest earned measure. These two are clearly correlated because you will owe more interest if you carry a larger debt load. Profitability is measured through ROS, ROA, and ROE. In general, we can say that Heartland is not as profitable as an average company that has a similar asset and liability structure. 3. Bank decision making I do not believe that the bank will approve the loan if it actually does use the survey data as a benchmark against Heartland's financial statements. Even if the loan is approved, it will include a higher interest rate, since the bank could loaning to Heartland as a risky venture. The main objective of any loan officer is to ensure that the loan made can be repaid, plain and simple. However, this requires an understanding ...

...and incorporated application of Halford Mackinder’s Heartland Thesis, demonstrated by Michael Klare, is the most persuasive and applicable in a contemporary setting. Klare’s Realist Theory Michael Klare applies realist theory to explain contemporary American international relations. In this explanation, Klare draws on the geopolitical thesis of Halford Mackinder. Mackinder’s theory explains that the state that controls the Heartland, which is land seen to be of geopolitical importance, will inevitably become a global superpower as they amass economic and political strength from that territory. Mackinder states “Who rules East Europe commands the Heartland; Who rules the Heartland commands the World-Island; Who rules the World-Island commands the World.” (Mackinder 1919: 150) Klare’s incorporation of a realist approach lies in the way he explains America adherence to the Heartland thesis. Klare demonstrates America’s desire to control the Heartland by overtly militaristic foreign policies in areas of great geopolitical competition. America had been involved in conflict in the resource rich and geopolitically sensitive area of the Middle-East for two years at the time of Klare’s writing; the extension of the conflict into the new decade furthers the persuasiveness of Klare’s realist theory. The realist analysis outlines that this involvement serves America self-interest and national security as control of this modern Heartland, and the economic power it provides, quells the...

...Based on my map and the researched information, I noticed that the Northern Region had much higher prices than the rest of Canada. When in comparison with the other regions, the prices in the Northern Region were more than twice as those in the other regions. I also noticed that the average prices in the Urban Heartland were the lowest at about $2.99. The order of the least average price to the most is as follows: Urban Heartland ($2.99), Atlantic ($3.56),Central ($3.73), Pacific ($4.10), Prairie ($4.10), and Northern ($8.09). I believe the reason that Northern Canada's prices are so high is because of all the additional expenses. For example, transportation, store maintenance, and the minimum wage of workers contribute to the overall cost of the food. When...

Realism has been on the fore front of the academic discussion in explaining the crisis as the power competition between Russia and the West. Alternatively, Materialism has provided a different yet deeper analytical perspective on the conflict by attributing it to the broadening of the transnational class capitalism. ...Declining Housing Value of The Missions of Heartland Crossing 1 From around 1997 to 2003, the housing market in the Heartland Crossing area, specifically the “Mission” area, was experiencing a housing boom. Homeowners were buying the properties with the expectation of a safe community with parks, sport courts and fields, community pools, safe streets with biking lanes, and well maintained lawns and landscapes. The properties that are for sale need to be maintained by the sellers, even if they are bank owned, and new housing builds need to be put on hold until the ratio of homes for sale to total homes in the neighborhood improves. Following these steps will improve the community and raise the value of the homes to where they need to be so the homeowners do not have to face a decline of their community and property values. The problem is the Mission now contains home foreclosures and the current market value of homes are tens of thousands of dollars less than what the homeowners owe on their mortgages; the solution to this problem is the current homeowners need to pay their mortgages, work on home improvements, and maintain the neighborhood by keeping up with the facade of their property and follow the Home Owners Association covenants(McLaughlin, 2009). Since 2008 when the housing market experienced a decline, the Mission of Heartland Crossing was a community not unlike many across the United States that took a big hit and was negatively affected...
