Steinbeck uses a very realistic language. He describes a lot of details. This example is from the beginning of the novel, p. 4:
‘Evening of a hot day…(7 linjer)…pounded down river.’ These details of the natural setting are not directly a part of the plot, but they give the reader an understanding of the environment and their function is to make the text more reliable. By writing so, Steinbeck joins the naturalist tradition of literature which appeared in the 19th century.
The same tendency is also seen in the individualism of the character’s remarks. They are not spelled according to standard English, instead they reflect the social and geographic background of the persons. Lennie says ‘’tha’s” instead of “that is”, and George says “awready”, not “already”.
The language used shows us that Lennie and George is from the out- country and both have a very strong accent. ‘’I dunno. Have to keep ’em a while so they can drink Lulu’s milk’’
