Helga Flatland

Master and the Margarita

...Hella: variant of Helga, which is the feminine form of Helge, root is from old norse name Helgi, which was derived fro the word heligar; which means holy, blessed. Ironic because Hella is a vampire, and in the story, is one of the helpers of Woland, all of which is literally the exact opposite of being “holy or blessed”. “Come let me give you a kiss” (pg. 94) is similar to the women vampire in Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy’s The Vampire, who is the nephew of Lev Tolstoy. Italics on pg. 109: His Excellency Had a taste for domestic fowl And was always on the prowl for good-looking chicks!!! Is a parody on the couplets in Dmitry Lensky’s Lev Gurych Sinichkin, the main plot of this story is very similar to the scene we see in chapter 12, with the relationship between Arkady, his wife, and the young actress. The similarity between Lensky’s show and Bulgakov’s scene being that they are almost polar contrasts of each other. Original lines (from Lensky): His Excellency Calls her his own And even patronage Renders to her. In my interpretation, there is an Ironic contrast between the two couplets. Lensky’s original, to me, sounds like the main character: Actor, is giving the young actress respect and admiration. While Bulgakov’s rendition sounds like Arkady is doing the opposite and using the women in his life for his own pleasure, like how he is having an affair with the other actress who got the part of Luisa instead of his relative. Bulgakov might have made...

Flatland

...In the book Flatland, there can be numerous motives that the author is trying to tell the reader through very detailed text in the story. Often the author mixes a scientific plot with a narrative figure telling the story. Many of the motives in this story express themselves and eventually intertwine to answer and solve the main characters’ problems in the story. One of the motives that the author is trying to reach to his audience is the explanation of higher dimensions to a second dimension creature also know as the square. The author includes this in his story to educate the reader or the audience on a better understanding of math, and how dimensions play a big role with geometric shapes. The author follows this idea through the whole book, as this motive shapes the main character’s personality of how he acts to his fellow flatlanders. Through the beginning of the story, a square explains many of the traits of Flatland to his readers. In the story he usually explains his ideas or motives to the reader to help better their understanding of Flatland and his environment that surrounds him. “Imagine a vast sheet of paper on which straight lines, triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons and other figures.” (Abbott 15). Throughout the story, a square comes to the conclusion that his simple life is the greatest and the most superior to all of the shapes of Flatland; Not knowing that there are more answers and adventures to be discovered, which might change his life and understanding...

Archetypes In Flatland

...What if all we saw was 2D shapes? What f there were no depth in anything we looked at in our everyday lives? That I how things are presented in the book Flatland written by E. Abbott. The book is about shapes in different hierarchy that only see flat things hence the "flat land" part. Besides the fact of everything looking flat to them, there is a hierarchy problem within the shapes and some shapes are more important than other shapes. In the book, the men and women are shapes. The men are polygons and the women are lines. The few the equal sides the person has the lower you are in society and you are more looked down upon. For example sense an isosceles triangle only had two equal sides there for an odd ball and is looked down in society for that. Then you have things like pentagons and squares that are high in society because of there sides, but the circle is the highest of them all because it has infinity sides....

Flatland Analysis

...I have not ever read anything like this book. It is a book of what a world might look like if it only had two dimensions. The story of flatland begins talking about if the world was in two dimensions. People in this world only have length and width. The rain falls from north to south in Flatland. The houses are made in the shape of a pentagon. Fog is common in this world. In Flatland, the men are all polygons, and the women are lines. Isosceles triangles are the lowest working class and are the soldiers. Equilateral triangles are the merchant class. Squares are lawyers. Pentagons are doctors. The more sides they happen to be, the more educated they are supposed to be. Women are the most dangerous beings in Flatland. Their shape can easily hurt any polygon. However,...

Flatland

...“Flatland” by Edwin Abbott I would like to start out by saying that I’ve never read a book that completely revolves around a mathematical subject; it was different to say the least and it definitely took some effort to pay attention to what I was reading in the beginning. I don’t mean the math part or the author’s use of geometric shapes, I actually found these to be the simplest concepts in the book; simple enough for a child to understand even. I think it was very organized as well, which made it really easy to follow. Abbott separated different subjects in different sections; twenty two sections made up the book and they all had titles explaining what each section was about which made it super easy to go back and reread a certain section without any trouble. So if I wanted to go back and read about the colors that were once used in Flatland to differentiate people of different classes, I would look back to the contents page and know that section nine is where ‘the Colour Bill’ was discussed. It was the social concept that I had to really sit down and think about. “Flatland” takes place in a fictional country where the citizens are geometric shapes; the priests, who weren’t really priest as the author later explains, but the administrators, the scientists, the engineers, and the ruling class of Flatland who oversee all things of merit, are circles. Other men can have many sides; the more sides, the higher up the social class they become. An additional side is given to...

Edwin A. Abbott's Flatland

...It is rare when a book can both entertain and inform. Flatland, however, completes this task exceedingly well. Edwin A. Abbott’s novel is a unique lesson in dimensions. Abbott completes the duties of a mathematician or astronomer in his explanation of the universe’s dimensions, but the lens through which he teaches the reader is an incredibly compelling metaphor. In Abbott’s Flatland, we meet a middle class, square lawyer that lives in a world of second dimensionality. The women of his world are lines, the soldiers are isosceles triangles, and the aristocratic circle class rules over the land, led by the Head Circle. The world of Flatland is cleverly adopted to its second dimensionality, and Abbott spins well-constructed histories and social norms to explain the behaviors and survival of the people of Flatland. After an introduction to this new world, the second half of Flatland boldly goes into its exploration of new dimensions. The square journeys to Lineland, the first dimension, and Spaceland, the third dimension. He even travels to Pointland, a world that is a single point with zero dimensions....
