The Helix Pomatia The Helix Pomatia, better known as the Roman snail, has a distinct look. It has a brown or cream colored shell. The shell has definite brown bands. The shell is 30mm to 50mm in width and 30mm to 45mm in height. The body, or foot, of the Helix Pomatia is a gray brown color.

Getting Around When the Roman snail goes from place to place, it uses its foot to move. The foot muscle contracts and expands, causing a cinching movement. The foot produces a mucus that eases the action of moving. The mucus allows the snail to just glide along. If they didn’t have this mucus, they couldn’t move without injury.
