...Lee Daniels “The Butler” This is sort of the story of Eugene Allen, an African-American who was a butler at the White House from 1952 to 1986. During his period in office, he served presidents from Harry Truman to Ronald Reagan. In Lee Daniels’ The Butler Allen’s fictionalized substitute is Cecil Gaines who is played by actor, director, and producer Forest Whitaker, who leaves his burdened Southern life behind to start a new life in working in our nation’s capital. Much to the delight of his wife, Gloria, who is played by the media owner (OWN), talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, and the exasperation of his activist son, Louis who is played by the actor and producer David Oyelowo, Cecil’s attentiveness to the needs of the civic elite while working at the hotel earns him a job at the presidential mansion. It’s there that he spends several decades, observing as people of power deal with questions of war abroad and civil rights at home. Daniels’ film uses the unique perspective of a White House butler as a jumping-off point to explore questions of race in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Lee Daniels “The Butler” has some accuracies based on Eugene Allen’s life and there are also some inaccuracies that is true about Cecil Gaines life that is not true about Eugene Allen’s life. Born on July 14, 1919, in Scottsville, Virginia, he died in 2010 and had a movie made some what about his life in 2013. With the time that he was born it was a very horrific time...

...Personal Statement 3. Describe a character in fiction , historical figure , or a creative work (as an art , music , science etc) that has had an influence on you , and explain that influence . Creative work (architectural structure) Whenever, I look at a picture of “Joe and Mansueto Library”, I sit there stunned by its extreme creativity and modern engineering phenomenon. The very next second I wonder what a masterpiece it is! And this is how I get inspired from these exemplary architectural designs. Although there are numerous eye-catching structures but this particular library is my primary inspiration due to several reason. The main reason would be its impressive structure and how well designed it is. This was the first structure I liked when I decided architecture as my field of study. Although, I have not been to the library in Chicago, Illinois, United States but, with the Internet providing many various images, I almost feel like I've been there. This structure has proved to be a great source of motivation for me. Another reason is that I have a thing for books and libraries. And oh, how it must feel to read under a snow covered dome! Reading books is one of my favourite pastimes and as far as a library is concerned, I am working on having a small one in my own house. I believe that Joe and Mansueto Library is a very good example of unique engineering and bold design coming together to foster intellectual discovery. This library now...

...The skills approach focuses on the ability to use one’s knowledge and competencies to accomplish a set of goals and objectives. In terms of these competencies, the skills approach identifies three particular competencies that are related to strong leadership which include: technical skills, human skills, and conceptual skills. In terms of these competencies, Angela Merkel has demonstrated strong qualities, made influential decisions, been elected through a public election process, and received numerous accolades that indicate she has a high level of proficiency and effectiveness in all three aforementioned competencies associated with the skills approach. The leadership competency of technical skill can be defined as the knowledge about and proficiency in a specific type of work or activity, and involve a hand-on activity with a basic product or process within an organization (Northouse, pg 44). In terms of politics, the technical skills necessary involves knowledge of foreign policy, an ability to effectively negotiate with other leaders and unions, and also an ability to enact effective policies for the area one governs. Angela Merkel is a prime example of the skills approach in relation to technical skills because of the fact that her successful tenure as the Chancellor of Germany was precluded by a late involvement in politics. As was previously mentioned, Chancellor Merkel did not become involved in any kind of politics until the age of 36. Thus, she had to learn and acquire...

...Germany’s political system. She would also represent the FDJ in her secondary years as a member of the group’s district board. Political Life With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Merkel stepped into a full-time role in politics, becoming the deputy spokesperson for the Lothar de Maiziere pre-unification government. Post-reunification, she herself was elected to the Bundestag as a representative of her East German district, Stralsund-Nordvorpommern-Rugen, which she would represent until her ascendancy to the Chancellorship. From that point, she served in ministerial positions, including Minister for Women and Youth and Minister for the Environment and Nuclear Safety. During this time, she was taken into the mentorship of Chancellor Helmut Kohl. After Kohl’s defeat in the general election of 1998, Merkel moved on to a position as Secretary-General in her party, the Christian Democratic Union. During her tenure, she significantly expanded the influence and purchase of her party...

...Tiffany Prill Challenges of Leadership Leadership Book Analysis Modern World Leaders- Angela Merkel The person chosen for this leadership report is Angela Merkel. I read “Modern World Leaders-Angela Merkel” written by Clifford W. Mills. Being born in Berlin, with my pride in being German, as well as being a female with my own leadership ambitions, I felt Angela Merkel was a perfect fit for me. Gaining knowledge on the leadership style from one of the most powerful and influential women in the world, while also learning the values and beliefs my country is grounded on, I find Angela Merkel to be extremely interesting leader to study. Angela Merkel (born Angela Dorothea Kasner), was born in Hamburg, Germany on July 17, 1954. Angela was raised in East Germany where she later received Associates degree in 1973. Shortly after, she enrolled to the Karl Marx University where she later met and married Ulrich Merkel. She graduates with a bachelor and continues onto her PhD in Science at the Central institute for Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. By 1986 she received her PhD which is also the same year she goes back to West Germany for the first time since she was baby. It was the many years in West Germany, full of communism and hardships, that taught Merkel how strong and powerful government could be. Merkel was determined to use power to serve the people not use it to control them. Rather than telling them what they wanted hear, she told them what to...

...This dissertation will discuss Angela Merkel’s Leadership style and ethics during the Euro crisis. It will also compare Angela Merkel’s leadership style to servant leadership style. It will also describe how servant leadership may or may not change the outcomes of the Euro crisis. In the closure of the dissertation, I will discuss my own leadership philosophy. Angela Merkel Angela Merkel is the Chancellor of Germany. Last fall, she was elected to her third term as chancellor of Germany, making her one of the only two European Union leaders that survived the economic crisis (The Guardian, 2013). Angela Merkel was named by Forbes in 2014 as the most powerful women in the world (Forbes, 2014). Angela Merkel’s leadership style is pragmatic and methodical (The Guardian, 2013). Anne Applebaum (2013) states “She reigns. She doesn’t tell people what to do, she doesn’t give orders, and she isn’t bossy or pushy. She doesn’t throw Germany’s weight around or make demands. She simply sets parameters, and then lets everybody else make ‘choices’ themselves.” Merkel’s leadership style is prudent, democratic, and modest. Merkel prefers discussion, deliberation and consensus (Zeeb, 2013). The Germans call her “Mutti” (mummy), because she understands what her country wants and makes sure her country gets it (Zeeb, 2013 & The Guardian, 2013). Angela Merkel is a no nonsense leader that is well respected. Merkel and the Euro Debt Crisis The European sovereign debt crisis...

...Facebook: It’s about the money 1) Facebook faces controversy over the handling and usage of the extensive information it collects from its users. FB user’s biggest concerns are the privacy and user controls over the information granted to Facebook. Facebook faces the dilemma of how to gain revenues from user information without violating their privacy. The management and organization failed to consider its users privacy concern when it introduced new software that users felt to be invasive. Facebook provides a free service that users pay for, in effect, by providing details about their lives, friendships, interests and activities. Facebook, in turn, uses that information to attract advertisers, app makers and other business opportunities. Facebook occasionally isn't enforcing its own rules on data privacy. Facebook requires apps to ask permission before accessing a user's personal details. However, a user's friends aren't notified if information about them is used by a friend's app. Facebook provides people a specific social networking platform and facilitates contents sharing and communication. It targets global internet users, advertisers, and also application developers. Facebook partners with different parties in the functionality, application developing, and advertisers for enabling various features to meet users’ different social needs. ...Netscape's Initial Public Offering Executive summary Netscape Communications Corporation was one of the big players in the dot-com era and information technology boom of the late 1990's and contributed in making the Internet and World Wide Web known to common people. On August 9, 1995, Netscape went through the initial public offering (IPO) process. Dramatically, on August 8, the day before the IPO, Netscape's lead IPO underwriters recommended to the Netscape board to increase the initial offering price to $28 per share from $14 per share, a 100% increase. At this new offering price, the Netscape's value would suddenly climb to more than $1 billion, which when held together with their 1995 revenue of some $16 million, to many seemed like a very optimistic firm value. Furthermore, the company was only 16 months old and had yet to turn a profit. The big question was: What yearly revenue growth rate is needed to support a firm value of $1 billion and an IPO price of $28 per share, and is this growth rate realistic? To answer this question we have performed NPV analysis for the period 1995-2005 based on Netscape's income statement and balance sheet for 1994/1995 together with a number of assumptions stated later in the text. We found that a yearly revenue growth of 59.4% was necessary to justify an IPO price of $28 per share and thereby a firm value of $1 billion. Even if Netscape was the indisputable leader of its kind in 1995 the number of competitors was on a steady rise...

...While still a little confused in what is being said, I feel like the power law may connect to Jefferson’s statement of not knowing because the power law in and of itself cannot be determined until plotted out. Unlike other graphs, the power law creates graphs that can have any number of outcomes with skewed results. The quote in the book, “Focus on what you understand and can explain; save what you don’t and can’t for your next book, after you’ve figured it out,” is actually a really good quote. Power law graphs, from what I understand anyway, take what is known about the internet and with the graph it’s able to figure out what it doesn’t know; just as Notes is Jefferson’s book on what he does know as well as what he doesn’t know. At least, that’s what I got from it. Question: Why does Internet Explorer run so much slower than Chrome or Firefox? What I think: Because it has to transfer more data to a server that is way too far out of date. What is Acid3? (Found this while looking up the answer) Apparently it tests just how fast and good a browser works. The better the web, the more colorful rectangles you get. ...From your experience, what elements make it difficult to access a new website or its information? Websites accessibility and usability play a pivotal role in the success of a website. Good usability provides a rewarding experience for visitors. For me the elements that make it difficult to access a new website are: Typography and colour contrast: Good contrast between background and text makes content engage user intelligible. Lack of contrast makes it very difficult for visitors to read your content. Bad information Architecture (Over crowded /overpopulated site): Information and resources should be organized in a way to attract its target market, information should be categorized and sectioned for the ease of use. An overpopulated site can take away from its content and diminishes its function to vocalize the objectives of the company. Unsolicited pop-up windows: Although these were created to entice you into making purchases, some are bogus and can be detrimental to your system. Browser inconsistency (Browser and operating systems incompatibility): The Web site may display a message that indicates that you must use a supported browser; this can be time consuming or may request the experts which may be costly to user. It is imperative for companies to ensure that their sites appear and behave consistently across all major browsers such as Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Opera as they add to the image of the company. Language barrier- Possibility...

...The three browsers that I would be speaking of are Mozilla Firefox , Google Chrome and Opera. These three browsers are the main browsers on the market at the present point in time they are all used world wide and are used by millions each between themselves as individual browsers. They are all supportive of cross platform use Windows Os , Mac Os and Linux Os and can also be used on portable devices such as tablets and cell phones. Opera being the older of the three has been around for quite some time in fact since 1994 when it was started as a research project at Telenor a Norwegian telecommunications company. In 1995, the project branched out into a separate company named Opera Software ASA, and launched a version in 1996.Opera has made many upgrades since then, and introduced notable features such as Speed Dial. The Opera browser was named MultiTorg up until version 2.0 and was not available to the public. Opera was known for its multiple document interface (MDI) and 'hotlist' (sidebar), which made browsing several pages at once much easier as with the other 2 browsers Mozilla and Chrome In February 2013, Opera Software announced that their proclaimed rendering engine, Presto, would be phased out in favour of WebKit which is carried also by Mozilla and Chrome.[4] Opera 15 saw the browser being fully rewritten, with this and subsequent releases being based on Blink and Chromium Os. Even with as many features carried Opera browser is recommended for slower and earlier...

...All of my comparisons are limited due to the fact that during this SLP I was forced to switch to a government laptop that I was unable to download browsers to. My primary personal browser is Google Chrome. I choice to use this browser after it was introduced to me by a friend several years ago. I appreciate the simplicity of it and it’s functionality. However, upgrades over the years have changed the interface considerably and made certain things like internet options hard to locate at times. I have had minor issues with the browser seeming to crash however, it is hard to tell if it is the browser itself or the computer that is causing the problems. I have an appreciation for the fact that I am able to identify multiple home pages and every I open up the browser all of the pertinent pages are immediately available for me to access. Overall, Chrome has been a great browser with only minor issues. At work I use Internet Explorer. I have found no issues with this browser and believe the only reason I don’t use it personally is for a change of scenery. Explorer seems to offer all of the same functions that Chrome has as well as the occasional crash. Because the Air Force remains loyal to Microsoft, the one plus to Explorer is that it is the only browser that will operate all of the online applications that the Air Force requires we use. Other than this minor detail, I have found no difference in the functionality. Another browser that I’ve been able to experiment...
