...Net Present Value Net Present Value Formula Net Present Value (NPV) is a formula used to determine the present value of an investment by the discounted sum of all cash flows received from the project. The formula for the discounted sum of all cash flows can be rewritten as Net Present Value Alternative Formula When a company or investor takes on a project or investment, it is important to calculate an estimate of how profitable the project or investment will be. In the formula, the -C0 is the initial investment, which is a negative cash flow showing that money is going out as opposed to coming in. Considering that the money going out is subtracted from the discounted sum of cash flows coming in, the net present value would need to be positive in order to be considered a valuable investment. Example of Net Present Value To provide an example of Net Present Value, consider company Shoes for You 's who is determining whether they should invest in a new project. Shoes for you are will expect to invest $500,000 for the development of their new product. The company estimates that the first year cash flow will be $200,000; the second year cash flow will be $300,000, and the third year cash flow to be $200,000. The expected return of 10% is used as the discount rate. The following table provides each year's cash flow and the present value of each cash flow. ...How can a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree take potential business men/women to the next level? An MBA is a broad degree that prepares students for high level management positions. Pursing an MBA helps gain knowledge in the business industry and further educates students in a field that they are highly passionate about. Even though an MBA is not always needed to succeed in the business industry, pursing an MBA can be very valuable because I am pursing an MBA to further my career, enhance my education, and achieve personal goals. The first important reason of why an MBA should be pursued is because it furthers careers. Pursing an MBA is something that should be taken highly. Having an MBA can open the door to a great deal of opportunities. Everyone wants to advance in his/her preferred profession. No one wants to linger in the same position creating a glass ceiling, but not many people truly know how to make their own advancement happen. Gaining an MBA can help further ones career and may increase salary. In some instances, employers may support more education and compensate for tuition costs. An MBA can also increase job security with your current job, if your employer is handling all the expenses. Joining an MBA program is a good networking opportunity and a good way to meet people and learn about other job opportunities. At the same rate, it is possible to succeed in the business industry without an MBA, but an MBA is a much broader view of the business world...

Mba Pursuit

...Pursuit of an MBA Marvin Conway MGT/521 1 April 2010 Construct and Support an Argument Decision to Pursue an MBA To some, pursuing higher education is a waste of money and time. Others, such as me, may argue that it is an accomplishment and the benefits from acquiring a degree are worth the efforts and hard work. With the current national unemployment rate at 9.7% (US Department of Labor, Feb 2010) and steadily rising, it seems improbable that finding that “ideal” job is likely. During these tough economic times, I find myself with a bachelor’s degree at a low paying job with a child to take care of. It is because of this situation that I have chosen to pursue a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) degree with an emphasis in Accounting; receiving higher education could be the answer to my problem. According to the job outlook by education 2006-16 (Occupational Outlook Quarterly), increased earnings and lower rates of unemployment are trends associated with additional levels of education (Liming & Wolf, 2008). After taking the Jungian 16-Type Personality Self-Assessment test, scoring ISTJ, I found that my results support my decision to pursue my MBA with an emphasis in Accounting. A person scoring ISTJ are found to be organized, compulsive, private, trustworthy, and practical people. Their possible career choices are office manager, accountant, business manager, tax agent, and public servant (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2007). I recognize that I possess...

Why I Decided to Get an Mba Degree

...Twyla A. Thompson MGT 521 August 22, 2011 Brian Fansler MBA: Why I decided to get an MBA degree Receiving my Undergraduate degree was one of my most proud moments in my life, I felt a since of accomplishment, responsibility, and acceptance. I just knew I was going to now be able to provide better for my family. That is why everyone around me said goes to college. Finish and graduate. A college degree can only help you and not hurt you. Well that statement can be a bit misleading, while yes a college degree won’t hurt you, it didn’t help me much either. I got into a situation that I had the degree but lacked the experience. Why didn’t anybody tell me to work as well? Get an internship? A mentor? I guess everyone had the misconception that college degrees grantee a good paying job; however, sometimes it’s not the case. I have come to say continuing education, even well beyond an undergrad, will not only help your career situation, but set a standard for your family and or kids, to always continue learning. Objection: An MBA will not guarantee a good job. It won’t guarantee a job, but what does? Having an MBA has put me more marketable with employers. Bryan Cohen argues that “First-year accountants with an associate degree made an average of $33,300 per year, while those with an MBA earned $39,800 per year as of April 2011 (Cohen, 2001). MBA open a world of big possibilities in a career field., The reason I decided, why not get my degree, is because I know it will pay...

Why Mba

...MBA programs expose students to the full depth of business function because they are created to apply science to management. The MBA is something that individuals in the more technical industries (math, science, etc.) obtain to expand their opportunities beyond what is available to them. An MBA means these individuals are now candidates for new, managerial positions – going from working “with things” and going into working “with people”. Similar to these individuals, I want to earn my MBA to open future professional opportunities. Personally, an MBA will help me bring value to my family and community. I currently hold a B.S.in Business with an emphasis in Information Technology and work in the Risk Assurance field. While I have a business degree, the work is do is technical in nature – programming, reading code, auditing and developing technical strategies to address risks. While I interact with individuals from the business it’s generally with other developers or programmers to discuss and address technical issues. As I progress my career at my workplace, I can see that the functions of my job will change. I see my superiors doing less of the technical work and more work with the business and our clients. Currently, some of my peer group and coworkers hold masters degrees, but they are all in accounting. While this is valuable, I feel an MBA will go much further. By earning an MBA, I will be able to bridge the gap between my technical knowledge and the managerial side of my...

...decision to get an MBA” Instructor: Lawrence Kirsch Student: Carlos Ochoa Date: 11/01/12 Although the MBA program has been successful for the past years, economy has changed and professionals have adjusted accordingly. The MBA program will provide me the tools to understand and implement business and management principles. I have been working professionally for more than 15 years in challenging positions with engineering companies and have good experience with many of the problems businesses and markets are facing today. The main reason why I decided to go back to school and attend an MBA program is to increase my salary potential and advanced my career. An MBA degree will help me find more employment opportunities and it will make me a more marketable professional. Although I want to start my own business and an MBA will help me do it. I am convinced that in today’s economy we need more job makers than job seekers. Earning an MBA is not a decision to be entered into lightly. The biggest disadvantage of taking an MBA program is its cost. The average cost of an MBA is estimated at $30,000 and there is significant time, attention, and energy involved, and there's no guarantee that I will land the perfect job after completing the program. In addition to this, getting an online MBA program will prevent students to have face-to-face contact and networking opportunities. The lack of student-to-student contact is also a disadvantage of an online MBA program. Networking...

Carey MBA. “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.” A famous saying from the movie Forrest Gump pretty much describes my situation. In my earlier life, I never thought I would come to US for my master of engineering, work as an electrical engineer at Force10networks (it was acquired by DELL recently), and now pursue an MBA. My past accomplishments that have prepared me for the W.P. Carey MBA include teaching mathematics in Taiwan, coming to US to improve myself, earning my engineering masters at the University of Arizona, and working as electrical design engineer at force10networks. Before I came to US, I had taught mathematics from high school level to college calculus for seven years. The reason that I like teaching is I like to sense students’ issues of learning mathematics. Advantages and Disadvantages of Pursing an Mba

...Advantages and Disadvantages of Pursuing an MBA Advantages and Disadvantages of Pursing an MBA The decision to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration is a difficult, personal decision. In fact, I categorize it as a life changing decision. For instance, this decision is like most major decisions people make. Whether the decision is over buying a home, changing careers, starting a family or buying that dream car, it is usually laced with advantages and disadvantages, pros and cons, and benefits and consequences. Whether or not those advantages and disadvantages are tangible, quantifiable and measurable, most would agree that they exist and they sometimes have life changing affects. For example, some people think that it is a disadvantage to buy a home because it usually results in one securing a long-term loan whereby a monetary commitment is required from the borrower or homeowner. If this commitment is broken or one is unable to pay as agreed, the borrower or homeowner can lose valuable assets, seriously hinder their ability to borrow money in the future and be looked upon by the banking and financial community as a liability or risk. On the other hand, or some of the advantages of buying a home may result in credit worthiness, proves that you are trustworthy, disciplined and according to Weintrub (2010), “gives one a sense of pride in ownership, stability and security” (para. 2.). With the above mention in mind, I will explore my personal advantages and disadvantages...

Whither an Mba at Strutledge

...Whither an MBA at Strutledge Strutledge University is a small private college located on the outskirts of a large urban city. There is a need to draw more students there and the idea of bringing an MBA program is in question. There are concerns that come along with idea of having a MBA program such as: the school not being able to compete with its competitors, the decreasing value of an MBA and the students being receptive to the idea. The MBA program contains many fields and can be of a great advantage to the University. The Board of Regents must take action to see if the MBA program would be a great fit at Strutledge University. The Board of Regents need to analyze what is being proposed and think about how this new program can be beneficial for the University. The program should be in compliance and aligned with the University’s mission statement. It’s important to make sure that the MBA program goes hand and hand with the mission statement and offers the same quality of work that the other programs offer. The Board of Regents should weigh the pros and cons that come along with starting an MBA program. In order to do this, the Board of Regents will have to gather more information about the MBA program because the little knowledge that they have on the program is not sufficient enough for them to make a decision. The Board needs to see if there is really a need for an MBA program at the school and if the students can benefit from it. As stated before, the MBA program can...
