...writing I will talk about famous fonts Helvetica and its early version Akzidenz Grotesk. Max Miedinger designed Helvetica in 1957. After that time, Helvetica has a big effect on design industry for many years. It is still being used by major brands as well as various governments and doing a positive job to deliver message or product to consumers in today’s world. It is really well designed typeface that you can’t miss on anywhere you see it. Basically, it is characterized by its smooth, modern, and well-organized individualities. Akzidenz Grotesk font was designed by H. Berthold in 1896. I never used this font before so I made a little search about it. The first thing that I noticed, it can be called early version of Helvetica and the first sans serif typeface that was commonly used. Also connections between Helvetica and Akzidenz Grotesk are obvious. However, Akzidenz-Grotesk is generally thought to remain more circular, less wide and there are also couple sensitive differences. On Wikipedia website it says “ the uppercase and lowercase C and the uppercase G, J, R and Q. Aside from the subtle differences in these individual letters, Miedinger's primary change to Akzidenz-Grotesk is Helvetica's higher x-height, the distance from the baseline to the height of the lowercase letter x. The general effect is that Helvetica appears more oblong while Akzidenz-Grotesk maintains circular counters and bowls.” As a result, both Helvetica and Akzidenz Grotesk is one of the...

The fonts name originated from the word, “Helvetia”, the Latin word for Switzerland. Since the fonts creation it has been received positively and to this day is used across magazines, billboards, books and the web. Among these, is its use in most of Apple Inc. products, such as the iPod and iPhone. Helvetica is commonly known for its usage on the iconic signs of the New York subway system. Its success has been attributed to its extremely crisp appearance and humanized characteristics. Helvetica became the first font to be added to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which is no small task for a font. This resulted in the museum holding an exhibit entitled, “50 Years of Helvetica”, which began in April 2007. The fact that Helvetica has stood the test of time for over 50 years shows its lasting impression on the world. As well as this, the font has a reputation as being used by the top graphic design and advertising firms in the world. Helvetica’s wide usage...

...the words visually attractive and effective” (Baines and Haslam, 2005). One particular style that has left an enormous mark in the history of typography is the international typographic style and it is still utilised for a lot of contemporary design work. This particular style has its roots formed by the modernist movement that started a few decades before it emerged. The style was later called The International Typographic style because it was mainly built on the use of typography. There are two typefaces that are the big stars of the Swiss style, the so called “Sans Serif Twins”, Univers and Helvetica. Both of them gained huge popularity among typographers right after their emergence and up to date they are still one of the most favorable typefaces in the world. How can that be possible? How can typefaces designed half a century ago still be used in contemporary practice? Both Helvetica and Univers are special in their own way. Univers was designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1954 in Paris and...

Our mission is to publish peer-reviewed articles that present original research findings germane to the theories and practices of information technology. We seek papers that present substantive additions, comments and challenges to the theory and practice of programming, networking, information management, web systems and user-centered design. This issue presents an example of research continuity and progress. Charles Pak and James Cannady have expanded their previously published research into Hidden Markov Models as an approach to apprising IT security analysts, managers and administrators of changes to the nature and intensity of the threats that plague our increasingly networked world. As the authors conclude, “The research results of this study offer a valuable contribution to the field of information security. When risk can be forecasted before the actual risk materializes, stakeholders can effectively...

[edit] Characteristics Univers is one of a group of neo-grotesque sans-serif typefaces, all released in 1957,[2] that includes Folio and Neue Haas Grotesk (later renamed Helvetica). These three faces are sometimes confused with each other, because each is based on the 1898 typeface Akzidenz-Grotesk. These typefaces figure prominently in the Swiss Style of graphic design. Different weights and variations within the type family are designated by the use of numbers rather than names, a system since adopted by Frutiger for other type designs. Frutiger envisioned a large family with multiple widths and weights that maintained a unified design idiom. However, the actual typeface names within Univers family include...
