...9-197-103 REV: MAY 21, 2004 WILLIAM J. BRUNS, JR. Precision Worldwide, Inc. In late May 2004, Hans Thorborg, the general manager of the German plant of Precision Worldwide, Inc. (PWI), scheduled an afternoon meeting with his sales manager, accountant, and development engineer to discuss the introduction by the French firm Henri Poulenc (a competitor) of a plastic ring substitute for the steel retaining rings presently used in certain machines sold by Precision Worldwide. The plastic ring, new to the market, not only had a much longer life than the PWI steel ring but also apparently had a much lower manufacturing cost. Thorborg’s problem stemmed from PWI’s large quantity of steel rings on hand and the substantial inventory of special steel that had been purchased for their manufacture. After a thorough survey, he had found that the special steel could not be sold, even for scrap; the total book value of these inventories exceeded $390,000. For nearly 90 years PWI had manufactured industrial machines and equipment for sale in numerous countries. The particular machines involved in Thorborg’s dilemma were made only at the company’s plant in Frankfurt, Germany, which employed more than one thousand people. The different models were priced between $18,900 and $28,900 and were sold by a separate sales organization. Repair and replacement parts, which accounted for a substantial part of the company’s business, were sold separately. As with the steel rings, these parts could often...

...Precision Worldwide, Inc. Case Study Involved Parties: Competitor-French Firm: Henri Poulenc Precision Worlwide, Inc.-German Firm Hans Thorborg-General Manager Gerhard Henk-Sales Manager Bodo Eisenbach- Development Engineer Patrick Corrigan-Parent Company Spokesman Background: Precision Worldwide, Inc. (PWI) manufactures industrial machines and equipment for sale in numerous countries. Repair and replacement parts account for a substantial part of the company’s business. The replacement part in question, steel rings, occur in the machines manufactured only in PWI’s Frankfurt Germany plant, but can also be used on some competitor’s machines. The steel ring manufactured by PWI has an average normal life of about 2 months. Machines require between 2 and 6 rings to operate. Individual rings are replaced as they wear out. Over the years, competition had increased and now a competitor company, the French firm Henri Poulenc, has entered the market with a superior plastic ring that replaces the steel ring. The plastic ring is less costly to manufacture and has a longer life. Situation: The PWI sales manager, Gerhard Henk, is asking when this product will be available for him to sell that his competitor already has on the market, particularly in France where the competitor is the strongest. Bodo Eisenbach, the PWI development Engineer, estimates the plastic rings can be produced in about 4 months at a tool and equipment cost of about $7,500. PWI currently has about $390...

...What action should Hans Thorborg take? Why? One option Hans Thorborg has is to develop a new marketing strategy to incorporate the remaining inventory into new sales. For example, he can instruct Gerhard Henk the sales manage to offer the customer a new set of replacement plastic rings free after the first rings wear out. The promotion would help PWI to fortify the vendor to customer relationship commitment of quality and satisfaction while potentially increasing sales as well. The assumption would be the plastic rings are produced by the time the rings wear out. Hans would then have to deal with the total cost of two rings ($279.65 + $1107.90 = $1387.55 per hundred). In this scenario Hans would be face with a net loss of $37.55 ($1387.55 - $1350 = $37.55) since the two combined cost are over the selling price of $1350 per hundred rings. The net loss of $37.55 would be significantly less than trying to sell the units that will soon be obsolete and can reasonably expect the selling price to fall from $1350 to $337.5 per hundred ($1350*.25) which would be one fourth the current selling price of $1350 since the plastic ring is 4 times more durable than the steel rings.. To recover from the lost of $37.55 per hundred rings, Hans may want to consider increasing the price of labor for service calls. Once the plastic rings are introduced to a majority of the market, the price will become more competitive. The markup of nearly 500% ($1350/279.65 = 483%) for the plastic ring will not...

...Suanira Morel Prof. Watson Lit 237 15 May 2015 Exile and Totalitarianism The rise of totalitarianism often plays a major role in the exile of a large group of people. Many times when a dictator arrives at a nation with intent to take rule over it, certain people go immediately into hiding or even flee the country. Although this puts them at a huge risk that may result in death, they face even greater risks when staying in the country to face the rise of fascism. Along with the victims, those who help them also face a great risk of getting caught and then arrested or killed. The concept of exile brings about many new problems for people to deal with. When in hiding, an individual may suffer so much turmoil that it can affect them psychologically or even take a toll on them physically. This tragedy will often bring about many mixed emotions from someone, where some days will be easier than others. The isolation alone that results from being in hiding can have a major affect on a person. The Diary Of a Young Girl is a great body of work when referring to exile because Anne Frank wrote an entry every single day on the struggles of her daily life being in hiding. This book is a great representation of the worries that thousands were faced with when Hitler was in power. It is ironic that although Anne’s family was going through a tragedy themselves, they still felt fortunate enough to be thankful that after all, they did not end up like many of their peers. ...This is seen when the authors write, “Many assume that the morally safer route is to always provide the treatment rather than withhold or withdraw it” (Welie and Henk 2014). Welie and Henk have proposed that this should not always be the answer when looking at withdrawing and withholding medical treatment and at some point can be immoral if we do force treatment upon patients. In regards to treatment, the authors express a very pertinent point that even in everyday life, “We are always responsible for our commissions, but occasionally we are also responsible for our omissions” (Welie and Henk 2014). Unfortunately, our society has placed the omission of treatment to a patient as neglect in all cases, even in those when a patient does not want treatment or where treatment would be futile. Our culture needs to move away from the negativity towards letting patients choose death as an option. Is it not more moral to let someone choose their own path rather than force someone to prolong their suffering? I believe that it would be immoral to prolong their...

...EDUC-6705R-2 Foundations of Reading & Lit December 8, 2013 Student assessment of cognitive and Non-cognitive affects for literacy development Abstract Assessments are a very valuable tool for teachers. In the past, I have only given cognitive tests and used that data. Using a non-cognitive assessment opened up the door to a new pathway for me. I can use this data to assist me in motivating struggling students to read. Utilizing the data from both types of assessments, conferencing with students, and learning about their home life will allow me to use appropriate strategies for them to be successful. . Student assessment of cognitive and non-cognitive affects for literacy development What influences a child to become a successful learner? How can I motivate my students? What approaches should I take? What are the attitudes students have towards learning? Assessments help me identify these answers to these questions and help me understand students academically, as well as, socially. I also have to consider the students home life. How involved are the parents and siblings with this student. The answers to these questions will help me determine the direction I will need to go in order for my students...

...June 2012 • www.Mojo3Dprinting.com • 10 CASE STUDIES A New Mindset in Product Design 3D printing can help bring better products to market faster By Stratasys Inc. What is 3D printing? The terms “3D printing” and “additive manufacturing” refer to processes that automatically build objects layer by layer from computer data. The technology is already well-used in many sectors including transportation, health care, military and education. Uses include building concept models, functional prototypes, factory tooling (such as molds and robot-arm ends), and even finished goods (such as aircraft internal components). The aerospace and medical industries in particular have developed advanced applications for 3D printing. 3D printing is sometimes referred to as “rapid prototyping,” but this term does not encompass all current uses for the technology. Materials used in 3D printing include resins, plastics and, in some cases, metal. 3D PRINTER Since 3D printing’s inception, system reliability and model quality have increased, resulting in diverse applications. At the same time, prices have gone down to the point where some systems are affordable even for small businesses. In a 2011 report, Wohlers Associates predicted that worldwide annual sales of additive manufacturing systems will reach 15,000 units by 2015 — more than double the 2010 rate. Lower-priced professional systems will drive most of this growth.1 In FDM Technology™, printer software on the user’s Windows network...

...pros and cons for the migrant workers in Canada. Through the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAW), they are offered job opportunities and some medical benefits that Canadian citizens enjoy; however, they are not treated equally as promised. As Amuchastegui states, “They’re not wanted as citizens by Canada, they’re wanted as labourers”. By alternating between the narrative incident and general information, Maria Amuchastegui acknowledges the difficulties that can arise with migrant workers who come to Canada through the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAW). For example, Hermelindo Gutiérrez, a guest-worker from Mexico, is revealed to have kidney failure. Gutiérrez has been working for Pioneer Flower Farms for 7 years and is Henk Sikking Jr.’s right-hand guy. Gutiérrez advises the Mexican consulate of his condition; however, the consulate demands he returns to Mexico. Usually, when a migrant worker becomes ill in Canada, they can legally remain in the country for the duration of their permit. Unfortunately, for Gutiérrez he suffers from a long term illness which would normally send a worker home. Sikking Jr., fights for Gutiérrez to stay and be treated in Canada as he is one of the best workers. “We depend on these guys for our livelihood” he said, while arranging for Gutiérrez to file for refugee status. As he continues to await a court date for his refugee hearing, Gutiérrez was lonely and missing his family. A member of the Ste. Marguerite d’Youville parish...

Another problem was that Henri Poulenc was selling the plastic rings at the same price that PWI was selling the steel rings. Not manufacturing the plastic rings would be like ignore a considerable profit margin. In the meeting they concluded that the company was going to manufacture the plastic rings but they were only going to be sold on the markets where the competitors were selling as well. They would finish the steel inventory on the rest of the markets. Patrick Corrigan, from the parent company agreed on manufacturing the plastic rings but that something needed to be done with the steel rings. Henk, the sales manager...

...Alicia Bozzuto Period 6 Frankenstein Textpert Project: In Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, has captured the attention of millions of readers over the centuries. There are many questions one must ask in order understand the full purpose and intention of Frankenstein; can someone devaluate life so easily? What is the meaning of life? Can science really go too far? The outcomes of technology and science, even God for that matter, both positive and negative, can drastically affect the outcome of a creation. In Frankenstein, Victor realizes that triumphing science, the forces of nature and the mocking of God can, just as quickly, back fire. Victor Frankenstein, even as a young boy, was fascinated with the way things work and why they happened. In order to fulfill his quest social standings, he becomes obsessed with an idea that no one had ever thought or attempted before; creating a “perfect being”. With this idea, possibly mad idea, he did construct a being but certainly not “perfect” in his eyes. Victor shows as the devaluation of life and the society that demands for perfection by the creation of the monster. “Victor’s characteristics of selfishness, pride, dishonesty, and lack of value for life are presented.” (Lundsford) In his creation of life, something so incredible, once thought impossible, had finally come to a reality, but it was still not perfect enough for him. Frankenstein was unable to cope with his status as a creator; the thought of his creation haunted him...
