Many families bought automobiles because they were used for going to the grocery store, or going to work, or even going out to watch a movie (Division of the History of Technology,

Henry Ford Success Story

...Henry Ford was one of the first American industrialists. He is best known for his revolutionary achievements in the automobile industry. His love for automobiles started at the age of sixteen. But before that, he was just another small-town farmer. The Ford farm was located near Dearborn, Michigan. It was here Henry Ford was born, on July 20,1863. He went to local district schools like the rest of the children from his town. In 1880 Henry became a machinist’s apprentice in Detroit, where he learned the basics. Then only two years later Ford became a certified machinist, but returned to the family farm. 1888 to 1899 he was a mechanical engineer, and later chief engineer, with the Edison Illuminating Company. Ford married in 1891 and he and his bride, Clara Bryant, left the farm in Michigan and moved to Detroit. His life prospered in Detroit and with the birth of his daughter Edsel, in 1893, many people believed he should get a job that was more stable than trying to build cars. Most believed they were simple toys and would never replace the horse-drawn carriage. Then on the morning of June 4, 1896 Henry finished his first ever car, which became known as the Quadricycle. He took it for a drive around his block as many people stared. It was only big enough for him, even though his wife was excited about taking a ride in the horseless carriage. Soon she would get the experience, when he made the seat bigger and took to car out to his parents home. Finally having his...

...the Ford Motor Company Archives, With Reflections on Archival Documentation of Ford of Europe's History Elizabeth W. Adkins, Certified Archivist Director, Global Information Management Ford Motor Company Introduction: The Ford Motor Company Archives and the Story of the Company The history of the Ford Motor Company Archives is intertwined with the efforts to tell the story of the company. Both of these initiatives – the creation of the Archives and the telling of the Ford Motor Company story – began with the approach of the fiftieth anniversary. Company executives and the Ford family realized the importance of Henry Ford and his company in the development and progress of the twentieth century. They accepted the obligation to gather and organize the company's historical legacy to ensure that the broader story could be told. As a result, the first fifty years of the company (including its early international expansion) are fairly well documented and accessible to the public in research materials and in books. The historical record of the next fifty years, including the company's modernization and further international development under Henry Ford II, is less complete. By the early 1960s, for various reasons, the Ford Archives began to experience the "down side" of the up and down cycle that characterizes the history of American corporate archives. Most of the Ford archival holdings were donated to a nonprofit educational institution, Henry Ford Museum...

History of Automobile Manufacturing

...History of Automobile Manufacturing I decided to write my research paper about the history of automobile manufacturing, since my grandfather worked for over 30 years for General Motors, the most successful automobile manufacturers in the world. I hope to show how the manufacturing of automobiles began and how much it has changed over the last one hundred and twenty years. Exactly who invented the automobile is not known. Many engineers in many different countries were working on inventing a more compact and convenient “mover” of people. In 1806, the first cars powered by internal combustion engines running on gas appeared. In the United States the early automobile was seen as a logical replacement for the farm buggy. Therefore, the first automobiles were born in a blacksmith’s shop. The first successful gasoline engine motor vehicles in the United States was designed by Charles E. Duryea and built by his brother Frank. It was drove on September 21, 1893. The Duryea Motor Wagon Company was established in 1895 to become the first American company to build gasoline-powered automobiles. In 1896 the company built 13 cars. The first vehicle of the Duryea brother was named “Buggynaut”. It weighed about 700 pounds and had ball-bearing and rubber-wheeled tires. The earliest cars were painstakingly constructed by skilled and usually gifted engineers in the very modest workshops, often back-street garages. General purpose machines and techniques were used. ...

Ethics

...Cisco Systems, a technology firm with more than 60,000 employees worldwide, has emphasized ethics in interesting ways. Until a few years ago, Cisco did ethics training and enforcement like many other firms by using organization-required sessions and procedures. However, Cisco now uses a constantly available ethics program through its firm communications, Internet, and even television programs similar to American Idol. To conduct its ethics awareness, Cisco enables employees worldwide to view the Ethics Idol via television on its intranet. Cartoon individuals present different ethical situations and then have “judges” give decisions. Employees vote on the best answer to each situation. More than 10,000Cisco employees participate voluntarily in these network analyses. Many employees look at the Ethics Idol after work rather than during business hours. After the employees vote, Cisco’s ethics office professionals then give the best answer linked to Cisco company standards and compliance requirements. Using these creative and entertaining means has enhanced awareness of ethical issues throughout the fi rm. A new ethics document has been updated regularly, and more than 90% of Cisco employees have become certified in reviewing the code of the fi rm. Merging ethics issues, technology, and regular interactive training has led to ethical understanding and behavior by Cisco employees. Key factors surrounding the Ford Pinto Case The death of Lynn Marie Ulrich, Dana Ulrich and Lynn’s sister, and Judy Ann along with many others was what brought the controversy of the Ford Pinto’s faulty gas tank placement to a climax. After so many unnecessary deaths the release of the Ford Pinto was the responsibility of Ford’s CEO Henry Ford II and Ford’s new president Lee Iacocca. Iacocca reduced the average production of a car from three and a half years to a little over two years. Iacocca was aware that during crash testing the Pinto’s gas tank exploded upon collision but was desperate to expedite the vehicle’s release on his deadline. After the discovery of the Pinto’s faulty gas tank, Ford’s president decided it would be costly to make changes in the Pinto’s gas tank location and its size. The Ford Pinto cost $2000 and making changes would increase its price thus possibly making it less desirable by small car buyers. Ford’s mission, values, and guiding principles If Ford had its...

...Case – “Ford Motor Company” Instructor: Professor Pamela McLaughlin Course: Management of Concepts – BUS 302 Date: July 17, 2011 * This case outlines 4 strategic options Ford is pursuing to increase its profitability. Describe each of the 4 options. For each option list 2 criteria you would use to evaluate the option. The four strategic option that Ford Motor Company might pursue to increase its profitability is to (1) close down older plants in an effort to realign production and sales, (2) move the company to produce only smaller cars, eliminating or sharply reducing the SUV and truck lines, (3) take a dramatic step of dramatically reducing their North American presence and focus their efforts on international markets where they have been very successful, and (4) sell the entire PAG group, letting someone else figure out how to make money selling so few vehicles a year (Case Study, para. 3). When looking at any strategic plan, one needs to identify the decision criteria. Decision criteria are the standards used to guide judgment and decisions, states Chick Williams in Management. Naturally, the more criteria a possible solution meets, the better that solution will be. Two of the criteria that Ford would need to consider if taking the option to close down older plants would be, buying out workers (severance agreement) and dealing with the political implications of a closure. A buy-out agreement results from the collective bargaining process between Ford and its...
