The subject of this piece of art is Tituba who is a slave of South American descent who is accused of witchcraft. The purpose of this work was to depict a scene from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s play “Giles Corey of Salem Farms.” In this scene, Reverend Cotton Mather is traveling to Salem Village and encounters Tituba in the woods. He questions Tituba about the witchcraft accusations and she tells him that she “can ride through the air upon a stick” and follow him to the village (Longfellow, Scene 1.1). The popularity of this art piece is relative to how popular the play was. Longfellow himself is a popular American author but this specific play is one of his forgotten pieces. Thus, at the time the art was not that widely known among the audience.
