...Surely we should always you try to keep as many people alive as possible. On the off chance that the person risks their life and does save the other person, and then it was still a risk taken, but a risk also worthwhile. In terms of people’s morals and ethics, no-one would ever consider sacrificing the life off another person, as it would be against most people’s natural instinct. In the book ‘touching the void’, Simon knows that Joe is a dead man and has to cut the rope and leave Joe there too die, in this situation, Simon has only one thing too do. Though you would think he had the choice off trying to help him and risk his own life, but deep down he knew he would never survive with the injured Joe. This was not out of meanness, or cruelty, but he is being realistic. If you do sacrifice the person,...

...Hector Cervantes February 22, 2011 Mrs. Guerard 4th period We Are Born With Evil In the everyday life we always witness some sort of cruel act inflicted by a human on to another. Cruel actions range from people verbally to physically hurting others. We ask ourselves why people commit these acts. We tell ourselves that those are just the evil kind of people but like William Golding said “We are born with evil in us, and cruelty is a part of this.” This statement is true, we are all born with evil in us and we can all be cruel. It’s in our nature, something we cannot rid ourselves of. Although evil is in our nature, we can do our best and avoid it. First reason why I agree with Golding’s statement is because he shows how everyone has evil in them through a realistic case scenario. In Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, the kids were young, their ages ranged from 5 years old to around 12 years old. These kids started as innocent boys but later transformed into little savages. You wouldn’t think 5 year old boys would have the guts to hunt for their own food or even know how to hunt but these kids did. These kids prove that we are born with evil in us because they weren’t thought how to hunt but they knew how because it’s in their nature. We don’t do it because it is uncivil and inhumane like. People might use the character, Simon to argue that not everyone is evil because in the book Simon never really did anything cruel. Although Simon never showed a sign of him becoming...

...A man’s face, if we can read I aright, is generally an index to his character. We can tell what sort of man he is by the expression of his countenance, as we can tell the species of a shellfish by its shell; for, as a shell fish secrets its shell so the soul secrets its physical face. It is we ourselves who make our faces; and we make them gradually and unconsciously and to express our inner character. Character is simply the sum total of confirmed habits; and as a habit is formed, it slowly writes its characteristic marks on the face, and gives its own look to the eyes. It is harder to read character in the faces of young unformed children than in the faces of grown up men and women though one can often detect meanness or frankness even in the face of child; but the older people get, and the more fixed their habits, the easier it becomes to tell what sort of people they are, from their faces. There are certain kinds of faces which almost anyone can read. The character is written in capitals on the face. You cannot mistake the red and bloated face of the drunkard, the pride in the face of the arrogant, the crafty look in the eyes of the sneak. But it takes a trained and careful observer to read some faces, for some clever people can make their faces like masks to hide their real selves. The word “hypocrite” literally means actor and as an actor can make up his face so as to appear on the stage a different person, so can a hypocrite. A false hearted man may have an apparently...

...rhyme like tone through Auden’s use of short rhyming lines with heavy description of Miss Gee’s appearance. ‘She had a squint in her left eye / Her lips they were thin and small’. The descriptions give Miss Gee a ‘cartoon-esque’ impression and again make her and the overall poem appear quite comical. The fifteenth stanza, on line 59, ‘O, doctor, I’ve a pain inside of me’ although not a humorous line in itself, imitates the structure of the infamous ‘doctor, doctor’ jokes, making Miss Gee’s illness almost laughable. Many would argue and say that the blunt lines do not make the poem come across as funny, but uncomfortable and give the reader a sense of unease. Miss Gee’s abrupt and casual death, ‘He cut Miss Gee in half’, accentuates the cruelty of society and how uncaring the surgeons were. The ‘students who begin to laugh’ at her whilst she’s in a vulnerable position are also examples of how Miss Gee is treated by society. The ‘loving couples’ she passes who don’t ‘ask her to stay’ are further examples of her being shunned by humanity, making the...

...To what extent can the effects of privation be reversed? Privation is where you never form an attachment with the caregiver. It is different to deprivation which is where you lose the attachment with the caregiver after the bond has already been formed. Rutter in 1981 claimed that the effects of privation are more likely to be serious than the effects of deprivation. Evidence for this came from studies of children that have been carried out by different people on children who have suffered cruelty. The case of Genie is a big example of Privation that was carried out Cutiss in 1977. This reported the case of a girl who was looked in a room for 13 years by her parents and never formed an attachment. She was strapped to a potty chair for most of her childhood and was beaten if she made any noise. This led to her being physically undeveloped and could only speak to animals with animal like-sounds. After a lot of help she learned some language skills but her social and intellectual skills never fully developed. This case shows that the effects of privation can be reversed if you give the child lots of love and support. Another example of the effects of privation is the case of the Czech twin boys and that was carried out by Koluchova in 1976. This was the case where a step mother treated the twins very cruelly by locking them in a cellar, beating them up and had no toys. They were seven when they were and had rickets (bone development disease that is caused by lack of Vitamin D)...

...the well that they interact with the stranger. After many pleas the man has called out, the kids ignore his calls and lie about getting help. Every time he calls for help, they pretend to get help, but really they are just killing time and talk to one another about what they should do about the man. Though they give him food frequently, they avoid looking inside the well many times. They talk about if they should tell their parents, but don’t because the well in the abandoned parking is probably off limits to the kids. And not telling their parents shows that they are not supposed to be there, but they are kids so they are curious about everything. The story itself becomes and dark with the cruelty of the children, the power of names, and identity and responsibility. First, the cruelty of the children is pretty cruel because they do not know the man’s name or the man’s appearance, an absolute stranger in their minds. They have foreseen no clear punishments from not saving the man. What to expect if I save this man? They do not know law and kindness. Since it’s not obliged, then why should I make efforts which sound not so interesting and a waste of time and energy? The man and kids keep their conversation hollow. It’s “unfair” for the man, who is trapped in the deep well with restricted view of the outside. He is expecting help which doesn’t exist actually, all made up from the children. On the other hand, the kids are just curious about the well and the man. They keep asking...

...Reminder: Your intro should have the three components: A). A hook, B). Background including a brief summary, title and author’s name, and C). A thesis statement. See below: Example intro: Isaac Asimov once said that “to insult someone we call him 'bestial. For deliberate cruelty and nature, 'human' might be the greater insult.” Animals aren’t cruel because they mostly kill for survival, to eat, feed their young, and defend themselves, but humans they kill for racial hatred, jealousy, and power. A perfect example of the latter would be the Holocaust where humans tortured and killed other humans because they were different. In Eliezier Wiesel’s memoir, Night he describes the extreme cruelty and suffering he endures in Auschwitz and other concentration camps as a child inmate during the Holocaust. Wiesel can neither explain nor understand the reasons for human cruelty that he witnesses and endures during the Holocaust, but learns that cruelty breeds more of the same and in the end survival and self-preservation is all that matters. Night sample thesis statements: You may borrow one, make it your own or write one from scratch: 1. Question: Analyze Elie and other characters’ struggle with faith. You can approach this chronologically or by effects. What is Elie’s final judgment on the benefit/cost of faith? Consider Elie’s interpretations of God’s intentions and use of visual imagery (such as death and night imagery). Thesis: At the beginning of the...

...getting cruelly being forced to preform and “the show must go on” this is what people see every day when someone watches television, newspaper, ad, billboard, online, and especially in the circus. However no one has noticed that so many tigers and other animals are being hurt from these acts for circus acts. Many times people won’t lie about how they enjoy the circus and how exciting it was, how they enjoyed the circus animals, if anyone looks at this they will see that these animals are being forced into doing these kinds of acts and also animal cruelty. In this photo many have said that visual argument is animal cruelty. It shouldn’t be allowed in the U.S. all circus animals should be act free without their trainers using whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bull hooks and other painful tools of the trade to force animals to perform. A brief description of this photo and tells you a lot of how poor tigers are being treating cruelty and circus animals are in danger by being forced acting this tricks. Tigers are naturally fear fire and they are forced to jump in hoops in some circuses. Most of the circus animals spend 26 hours in their cages and on chains while traveling. So many of the circus tigers are being cruelly abused by their trainers a lot of Animals are beaten, shocked, and whipped to make them perform, over and over again;...

...Keera Owens 22 August 2012 Stop the Cruelty "Did you know that most American households have one or more pets than they have children?” stated by the American Humane Association. We all know that once you decide to get a pet that you now have responsibilities you must fulfill. For instance if you have a dog you know that a dog needs exercise, food and water, toys, baths, medical assistance and even a nice cozy bed. Something that's also important that a dog must receive is a sense of love and safety. “In the United States alone, five to seven million pets are turned into shelters each year,” (ASPCA). All of these millions of animals sitting in shelters are lacking the same one thing and that is a loving home. Due to animal cruelty a lot of these animals are being put in shelters and this is a very serious mater taking place all over the world. The term animal cruelty is pretty self-explanatory and almost speaks for itself. The first thing you think about is an animal living under cruel conditions. That almost pins the definition on the dot. According to the definition, “animal cruelty is the infliction of physical pain, suffering or death upon an animal when not necessary”, (Black Laws Dictionary). Animal cruelty occurs in various forms. Whether it's neglecting, starvation, dehydration, or simply not getting the proper medical attention, it is all forms of animal cruelty. People like to think that animals don't have any feelings and their incapable of feeling pain...

...should be doing more to prevent animal cruelty. Everyday, all over the world, animals are mistreated and abused by incompetent, cruel owners; often just to satisfy human pleasures. We are supporting the abuse and ignoring simple rights that they should have. For instance, do you agree that a dog has the right not to have pain inflicted on him or her unnecessarily? Infuriating and heartbreaking: we are still standing by and allowing this to happen. It is even more sickening when we realise that, everyday, ignoring the cat down the street being kicked by its owner or selecting what perfume or make-up to buy in our favourite shop- we may actually be contributing to the abuse of animals. Whether, a neglectful owner or science technician, we must do more to reduce this horrible reality. A huge number of the domestic animals are suffering in terrible conditions. Domestic abuse is prevalent in all areas of society today. Millions of domestic animals never know a caring human touch and live hard lives on the street before dying painful deaths. The three most common pets abused are dogs, cats and horses. To put this into a shocking reality, in the year 2007, the internet source buzzle.com, declared that a dreadful 64.5 percent of dogs were reported with some sort of abuse, 18 percent of cats suffered at the hands of mindless humans and 25 percent of other animal species[->0] were reported to have undergone some sort of cruelty. This is in comparison to the total...

...Ethical Treatment of Animals I. Introduction Animals have played an important role in many aspects of this world; some look upon these roles with favoritism, some with disgust. Animals give live birth and are considered different from humans by some people because of their behavior. Some animals are consumed as food by humans and other animals or trapped for their furs. Many times people get animals as pets and neglect them. Some animals are pulled out of their habitat and are used as research yet; some humans think they don't deserve any rights because they are animals. A. Thesis Statement Throughout this paper I will examples of possibilities that can be used to change the life of an animal in the food industry, as a pet and as research, we need to help them have a better life even if we are going to use them as food and pets. II. Body paragraph #1 - Topic Sentence #1 On today's factory farms, animals are crammed by the thousands into filthy, windowless sheds and confined to wire cages, gestation crates, barren dirt lots, and other cruel confinement systems. A. Supporting Evidence PETA made a investigation at Agriprocessors in 2004 revealed almost 300 instances of inhumane slaughter, in which cows' sensitive faces were shocked with electric prods, fully conscious cattle had their tracheas and esophagi ripped from their throats with meat hooks or knives, and they writhed in pools of their own blood, trying desperately to stand up for up to three minutes as...

...Understand the link between animal cruelty and domestic abuse, like previously said there is a link between animal and domestic violence, if there is any suspicion of animal abuse in a home your phone call will be the door opener to help the family; if the control officer sees any sign of other abuse (they aware of the link) they will report it to social services. Teach children to respect animals, children learn how to treat animals from the older people within their lives. Be the person who shows kindness and respect towards animals and the children will follow in footsteps. This is one of the best things to do as they are our future and by teaching them at a young age can reduce the problem. They can become an educated consumer and understand where the puppy-mill puppies are being sold – through pet stores, online or newspaper advertisements. They should not support local pet stores that sell animals and encourage others to follow suit. They could join a non-profit animal organization such as the ASPCA or PETA. These organizations provide a wealth of knowledge about several animal topics including puppy mills and current legislation. Additionally, there are many ways to volunteer with these organizations such as joining a fundraiser, running a charity event or assisting in the fight for stronger legislation. Most importantly, they must learn how to recognize signs of animal cruelty and report any inhumane behavior to local authorities.
