...“The hero is never the star of the story” (Manson). This means that the hero never does anything for the attention it would bring. In the words of Christopher Reeve, “Heroes are heroes not because they have power, but because they have the maturity levels necessary to use said powers for the good of humanity.” Heroism is evolving to a higher level of human being and being greater than oneself without recognition (Stone). This means that a hero is someone that has become greater than a regular person, and not only for attention. In essence, the purpose of a hero is to do something extra-ordinary. Not everyone can become a great hero, but a great hero can come from anyone. They have completed their purpose, and have achieved something special. Each hero has a unique quality and/or objective. Now we remember them because of their noble cause in...

...In the words of Brodi Ashton,“Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers that they are graced with.” A true hero is not always the savior or warrior that you see in movies and comic books. To be a hero, you need courage, sacrifice, determination, and generosity.. A hero helps others before they help themselves, and that is what being a hero is really about, helping others. Being a hero takes a lot of work. They have more than one thing that they have to do. Each hero has different functions, but the main functions of a hero are protecting people, giving moral and mental support, overcoming the challenges that are given to the hero, helping people solve their problems, doing the right thing even if it is not easy, fighting for what you believe in, and being a good role model. These things are not always easy, in fact making good choices may be one of the hardest things in the world to do. The influence of others pushing you to do the wrong thing will always be there, a real hero knows how to make a good decision, having both others and him/herself in mind....

...Joseph Campbell in his book, the hero of a thousand faces, argues that what we consider heroes follow a very distinguishable path towards heroism. In other words, Capmbell argues heroes through out history while multifaceted might come from a mono-hero or monolithic idea behind what means to be a hero. To argue that the best way to understand the character of society is through its heroes might be a futile endevour. If we are swayed by Campbell's argument, we could argue that heroes for different cultures represent similar common longings in all human beings. However, the longing for truth, overcoming, transcendance, or other values might be represented with different facet accross different cultures. In this regard, cultures will explore difference facets of truth or valor and will superficially be seen different. Nevertheless, the monomyth of herois would argue that behind that superficial understanding of the hero very similar values or longing for something abstract and transcendental is what motivates and moves our heroes in society....

...what’s a hero” asked the child.” I don’t really know” replied the mom. So what do you think truly defines a hero. Well I think there are many traits a hero processes or at least should pocess. A hero isn’t always the guy with powers, who wears a cape and a pair of tights. Truthfully a hero can be anyone or anything, even an animal or a small child. I think a few traits a hero should definitely have are being helpful, kind, brave, and physically or mentally strong. They should also be a good role model. A person who is a villain of some kind is not a hero in fact they are the total opposite of a hero. Firstly the main function of a hero whether it being animal or person is to be a good role model. Not only should the hero be a role model for children but also for the people surrounding them, which includes adults. Another function of a hero would be to save people’s lives whether be literally or figuratively saving their lives. Many heroic figures like doctors, police, firefighters etc. save an abundant of lives every day. But that doesn’t mean that to be a hero you have to save lives every day. While some heroes save lives and are good role models others do not do both. Some heroes may just do good deeds and are good role models. However just because they don’t save lives doesn’t make them less of a hero. An example of this type of hero would be someone like your dad or mom. You could look at them as a heroic figure but that does not mean they save lives like a doctor does. All...

...Waiting for grade I believe Odysseus is not a hero in modern day standards because heroes in modern day standards wouldn't make decisions such as Odysseus does in the odyssey. Odysseus makes some bad mistakes and confrontations most heroes today would prevent and avoid. Most heroes today have made mistakes but Odysseus has made many. Is Odysseus a hero using modern day standards? No, but in some ways he can be. I strongly believe that Odysseus is not a hero in today's standards because he was not very worthy to his men and/or team this is demonstrated when he encounters the cyclops, Polyphemus for example. This is shown when Odysseus basically watches a couple of his men get eaten by this gargantuan beast and doesn't try to slay it. Afterwards he does stab it's eye with a giant log but he didn't do anything directly after the dreadful murdering.they get away and even after he has blinded the cyclops, he is taunting it on his way off of the island and puts his men in even more danger because Polyphemus is hurling boulders at the ship and nearly hits it multiple times....

...Old White-Haired Freaks Do you have a hero? I believe that most Americans still have heroes. A person’s choice of a hero has definitely changed from the past. They choose a person who is close to their heart, such as a family member or a friend to look at as their hero. There are a couple reasons why I agree with this analogy. One reason is because of how we a look at people in the public eye and the other is the difference between a role model and a hero. Everything and everyone is overanalyzed in the present time. Any person that could be a hero has been cut down in size by somebody else. It does not matter if the person is a historical, biblical, or political figure, they have been judged and picked apart by someone who does not agree with their thoughts or morals. Everyone is a critic these days. Heroes and role models are judged even more erratically than those that were judged in the past. The main reason for this is because of all the means of communication we have via the web. In the “George Washington Era”, when a hero made a bad decision, it at times went unseen and unknown by many or even all. Now everyone can see every mistake or “screw up” that every person makes. It does not matter if the person is famous or not, the mistake will be seen by just a click of a button. There is a thin line between a role model and a hero. I believe that there is a definite defference between the two. A role model is a person that people wish to be like. They have...

...What is a hero? Danya West Columbia Southern University When asking the question “What is a hero?” You will most likely get a different answer from everyone you ask; being a hero means different things to different people. A hero in my eyes, could be a traitor to some one else. It can actually be a very touchy subject to some. An obvious example would be our soldiers, fighting everyday for our freedoms. To most, these men and women are undoubtably heroes. But there was a time not long ago, that soldiers returning from Vietnam were ridiculed, and treated like traitors, because many people didn't believe in the war they were fighting. Does that make them any less a hero? I don't think so, they had no choice in the reasons for war. In the Nation of Islam, many extremists believe that those who are willing to strap themselves down with explosives, and commit suicide in public places, are the greatest form of hero. To me, that just seems absurd. I don't think it takes fighting in a war, or even taking extreme action, to be considered a hero. I like to try to see the hero in everyday people. Any one can be a hero. To me, just reaching out and making a difference in someone's life, is an act of heroism. I'm lucky enough to say that I know some of these heroes. And they have restored my faith in humanity. My friend Jason was paralyzed from the waist down 16 years ago, after a 4-wheeler accident. He was always the cool kid; handsome...

...Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Date Phil Zimbardo – Heroes What does Zimbardo mean by the term “hero”? (4 points) According to Zimbardo, a hero is an individual who goes out of their way to help others and make their lives better. Zimbardo further asserts that heroism stems from the ability to stay firm in one’s decisions and restrain from the societal pressure. Zimbardo gives examples of children living in the ghetto and they are constantly seduced to engage in evil things like drug use, bullying and illicit sex. A hero, in this case is an individual who looks at the greater good and simply does not focus on the instant gratification and the need to be liked. He further urges people to be supportive of other people especially those...

...Throughout human history, society has put standards for what is known as a hero, and just as society puts standards, so do authors. Homer did such a thing when writing the epic poem The Odyssey, where he exhibits through the main character Odysseus’ certain actions that portray what current society believed a hero is meant to be. However time goes on and ideals change, and so does society. In current day society, Odysseus would not be a worthy example of an epic hero in the twenty-first century. This unworthiness can be witnessed by his destructive, blood-thirsty, and dishonest behavior portrayed throughout the story. Blood and chaos is the result of Odysseus’ destructive behavior, and being so, he is not a worthy example of a hero today....

...When the word “hero” is spoken upon, a connection is typically made with the word “super,” and the thought of characters flying around saving lives in some way, shape, or form arises. Heroes define not always as classic fictional characters such as Superman or Batman; heroes are people who stand for the common good, who make selfless sacrifices for a public cause. Selflessness means having little to no concern for oneself, to give to others without looking for personal gain. An exact science to what makes someone a hero lacks presence- instructions on how to attain the position of a hero do not exist. However, performing acts of goodness with no intent of personal gain can qualify someone as a hero. A person qualifies a hero when they performed a service to others in need, voluntarily, while making sacrifices, without expectation of reward. The Soldier- A soldier is a person who serves in the army. Soldiers sacrifice their life day by day for the people of their country. They sacrifice their life and their time and their ability to live safely in their country and being able to make their own choices and being able to sleep in a nice bed at night. ...What is a hero? What is a hero? By definition a hero is “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities" (Hero). We could even look as far back as the Greeks, with their gods and demigods, humans born with super natural powers that could take out an entire city with a flick of their wrist, because of their powers they were called heroes. These gods were feared and worshiped, religions were started because of their tales and accomplishments. Despite all these powers and abilities, one thing is not mentioned, core values. I feel a hero is a combination of values, because bravery without courage, integrity, humility and honor can mean all the difference between being a hero and being lucky. To me a hero is someone who puts all others in front of himself, who puts personal gain and ambitions on the back burner for the betterment of others or the greater good. Others define heroes as someone who signed their name on the dotted line to serve this country, or a person who gives blood in the Publix parking lot, we all have different views and opinions on what a hero is, but I think we can all agree, a hero puts others' lives before their own. What we should all understand, is that all of us have the potential to be a hero, the right person in the right place at the right time, can make all the difference in the world. After reading the other assigned stories I am drawn towards Bodega Dreams, the only character that could fit the definition of a hero is Mr. Tapia....

...” A hero doesn't run from danger but takes action instead. Heros are not selfish either they try to save as much people as possible. Being a hero means being brave and selfless by putting others before oneself, sometimes it does not mean a perfect storybook ending. They inspire us to be our best we can possibly be. Heros are sacrificial and put others before himself. Heroes should be brave and sacrifice for the common good and put others before themselves. One example would be soldiers sacrificing ther time and lives for their country. “While fighting for his country he lost an arm“ (S.B. pg. 56). He was dedicated to serving in the army to protect his country. Nelson Mandel was one to sacrifice for his people. He said “Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.” He sacrificed for...

...considered heroic according to the scale yet are not people one should aspire to be. A hero is far more than the milestones he prevails and the qualities he possesses should be a significant factor in evaluating his heroism. For example, both Samson and Achilles are considered heroes in their cultures but they are by no means exemplary men. Samson is seen as an Israelite hero yet he is both impulsive and aggressive, he killed many people from a neighbouring tribe after not getting his way. On the other hand, Achilles was a model Greek warrior but he was...

...Many have asked the question of what makes a hero someone to look up to. Or why is a hero a hero? The characters in the books Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and The Knight's Tale all show the attributes of a hero. Beowulf takes place in what would now be modern day Denmark and Sweden while Sir Gawain and the Green Knight takes place in what is now Great Britain. Finally, The Knight's Tale is an ancient legend that comes from Greece. In one story Beowulf slays the dragon Grendel. Then the young Prince Beowulf slays Grendel's mother. Similarly, Gawain goes on a dangerous adventure to keep his word, while two noble knights fight over a beautiful lady in the third story. Since all can agree that heroes must be brave and willing to risk their lives for the good of others, these protagonists exemplify a hero....

...other act of humanity? If yes, the modern world would consider you an everyday hero. However back in the time of Beowulf, a hero is portrayed as a strong and courageous super human. And while ancient and modern hero archetypes may serve a purpose in literature, they do not accurately reflect what it means to be heroic in real life. Old stories and modern films use implied metaphors, the hero cycle, and are usually influenced by culture. Whereas a real life hero is not bound by a writers ideas, and acts on their own. In almost every heroic story or film the hero encounters a challenge. These challenges can be thought of as metaphors for heroes in real life. Beowulf goes through many challenges throughout the book, but a notable one is when he goes to Grendel’s mother’s lair. When he “sank though the murky waves for hours, and at last he saw the mud of the bottom” (570, 574) he goes through a challenge. This challenge is a great example of a metaphoric challenge. The water symbolizes all the things he must go through to get to his goal, the bottom. Also he was sinking for hours. This amount of time also shows that no matter how far away the goal seems, it’s always reachable in some way or another. A second instance of this is when Beowulf kills Grendel’s Mother and “her body fell to the floor, lifeless […] Beowulf rejoiced at the sight.” (642, 645). This illustrates that when completing your goal as a hero, you are rewarded. In this case Beowulf is rewarded with pleasure and the knowledge...
