Historically what were Apple’s competitive advantages?

* Apple made its successful appearance for unique design of Mac and deep integration between hardware and software

From the early years when Apple was created, its capabilities in design and graphs made the company a leader in the industry, especially in publishing and education areas. During Sculley years (1985-93), Apple’s competitive advantages relied on that the company controlled the unmatchable software and peripherals which turned it into a global brand and led to explosion of sales. Apple was able to sell its products at premium prices because Apple developed its own set of hardware, software and peripherals which are the only alternatives to the IBM standard. Especially in core software technologies such as Multimedia, Apple maintained its leading position.

* Delivered a completed system with user-friendly platform: unique and powerful OS with beautiful, well designed software

Stepping into Job’s period, Apple maximized its competitive and sustainable advantages by further improving its operating system- Mac OS. Microsoft could dominate PC operating system market because it had unbeatable Windows system, so did Apple. Jobs also stopped licensing Apple’s operating system to cloning manufactures. Thus, Mac OS became the unique core product of Apple. Jobs also continued the deep integration between OS, applications and other devices. Every single Apple product can complement each other which deliver the customers with a user-friendly platform to “plug and play”.

* Targeted at whole consumer markets and stood out for its marketing strategy

Jobs also focused Apple’s strategy on whole consumer market where other competitors like Dell and HP sell computers to corporate. Developing into the lower consumer product market by launching of iMac along with large scale of advertising
