Managerial Powers in ME :
Intro:
Organizational power is the capacity to persuade a group to work toward the accomplishment of a company's organizational goals. It depends on the personality traits of the individual exercising the power. There are five types of organizational power: reward, coercive, expert, legitimate and referent. Reward and coercive power are commonly used within organizations. However the use of these two together can decrease the power of the individuals over time.

Businesses are run by people in power. There are, however, different kinds of power that allow those wielding them to use varying approaches and methods with varying degrees of effectiveness. There are five basic types of power in business, and it is important to learn how to recognize each type, and how to use each type effectively in business situations. Coercive Power
Coercive power is the most primitive type of power in the workplace. Coercive power exists when a person in authority threatens a subordinate with some type of punishment if a certain duty or activity is not completed or performed correctly. It is important to note that coercive power is used most effectively in scenarios where the business is in a crisis or is somehow threatened. Coercive power can also be used effectively when attempting to make cuts in personnel as a result of management shifts and transitions.
Legitimate Power
Legitimate power exists when the subordinates of someone in authority comply with orders given to them because they believe that the position or title that the person holds gives him the right to use that power. Legitimate power can be enhanced by ensuring that the business has a clearly defined chain of command and organizational structure.
Reward Power
Many employees are motivated by rewards and

Checkpoint: Word Barriers

...Communication: Relating to Others (2008), The first step to bridging differences between cultures is to find out what hampers effective communication (Beebe, Beebe, and Redmond, 2008). Men and women in romantic relationships are no different when it comes to communicating with one another. XCOM/200’s Appendix B, Fictitious Online Chat Conversation (2011), is a conversation between Karen and Brian where differences culminate into communication barriers that can damage their relationship. There are many self-oriented communication barriers amongst many fallacies that can cause Karen and Brian to hurt their relationship. Here is the conversation, the communication barriers presented, and a rephrasement: 1) 6:27pm Karenblue852 says: where r u?????? u r always late. you were supposed 2 b here like 25 minutes ago!!!!! The communication barrier in the starting sentence is static evaluation as Karen is labeling Brian without considering a change that Brian may have good reason to be late. Karen could have simply stated “I am here waiting Brian, is there a change in plans?” 2)6:41pm bRiAn_sMoOtHe says: HEY, WHAT’S UP? I’M HERE. BTW, I’M RUNNING LATE, I’LL BE THERE SOON, JUST ORDER ME A SANDWICH, I GOT HELD UP AT THE OFFICE Lack of clarity and tone are communication barriers presented by Brian in this instance. Stating “I’m here…” might give Karen a slight false sense of hope that Brian was physically there. Another communication barrier presented by Brian is watching for tone while...

Professional Grammar

...floating around various websites, and the capability of shortening every type of written correspondence, it is easy to become lazy with written word. But, to what end? Is it not possible, even though these “memes” may be in good humor, and that shorthand is just a tool in our busy lives- that it is truly an indicative sign of how our current generation views proper writing in our hyped-up, technological society? I think so. Therefore, proper grammar and correct writing mechanics are essential to success in various facets of our professional and personal endeavors. In the professional world, words always provide the first impression. From a simple greeting of a handshake and “hello,” to a resume submitted by an applicant, correct language is crucial. As a matter of fact, that first impression can depend on if a potential employee lands a job or not. Kyle Wiens, an author for Harvard Business Review, states “If you think a semicolon is a regular colon with an identity crisis, I will not hire you. If you scatter commas into a sentence with all the discrimination of a shotgun, you might make it to the foyer before we politely escort you from the building.” While his approach may err on the side of extreme, it still strikes a chord with many. Grammar is paramount to ensuring communication is concise and accurate in any situation. Anything less, and the original message may be misinterpreted or misconstrued. Because of a simple elementary mistake that is truly avoidable, the recipient...
