The strain of living in hiding is changing the characters. For example, when Dussel first joins the Franks and Van Daans he is very thankful and sweet to the families. He tells the families about what is happening outside and thanks them for letting him stay with them. He shakes all of their hands and says “Forgive me if I haven’t really expressed my gratitude to all of you. This has been such a shock to me.” After several months of living with the families Dussel starts to get frustrated. After Anne has awoken him because she was having a nightmare and screaming Dussel says “Something must be done about that child… Yelling like that! Who knows but there’s somebody on the streets? She’s endangered all our lives.” He continues by saying “Every night she twists and turns. I don’t sleep. I spend half my night shushing her. And now its nightmares.” Dussel is complaining about Anne and is showing that he is annoyed with her moving around in her sleep. It is the top floor of a warehouse and office building in Amsterdam. There are three rooms on and a small attic space. The rooms are sparsely furnished, and the windows are blacked out. There is a small stairwell leading down to the building below that has been hidden by a bookcase. There are ten characters so far: Anne, Margot, Mr. Frank, Mrs. Frank, Peter, Mr. Van Daan, Mrs. Van Daan, Dussel, Miep, and Mr. Kraler.
