That is why in recent years high schools have started to encourage students to pursue a college education as well as begin to prepare the students for college. The current methods high schools are implementing offer general ways of preparing students for college that are often times ineffective and lack proper execution. Since college preparation is critical for high school students to increase their chance of successfully graduating from college, it is now more crucial than ever before to provide proper college preparation for tomorrow’s college students. However college preparation requires more than just helpful techniques for studying and teaching yourself. College preparation also requires a good amount of hard work and learning core subjects that form the foundation for which we build our knowledge upon in college. We are aware that the majority of future jobs involve science, mathematics, and technology...

...Pay to Play: Economic Impact of Paying College Athletes 1. Purpose of Research & Analysis On April 25, 2014, the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., granted Northwestern University's request to review the decision made by the regional office recognizing the school's football players as employees. In mid-April, Northwestern football players voted as a team on whether or not to unionize, but the votes will only be opened if the board ends up siding with the players, which may take at least a couple of months. Ultimately, the Northwestern football players are determining their fate through this secret ballot and their decision to form the first union amongst college athletes—a decision that has the ability to change the landscape of American college sports. If granted the right to unionize, the Northwestern football team will actually have the ability to bargain over their conditions and it is expected that this could ultimately lead to requesting salary compensation for their efforts. In light of these recent historic discussions, it is critical to analyze not only the ethical, but also the economic impact of such potential situations. My research paper has been structured to shed some light into the challenging and complicated discussions that continue to occur around this topic. Specifically, I have broken my research and analysis into three key topics. First, I explore whether or not there is an underlying issue with the current state, from an economic perspective...

...Harvard College was one of the first colleges founded in the United States; upon its conception, the college’s main purpose was to train young men for the ministry. Harvard was modeled after Oxford and Cambridge universities (About Harvard College). During the early 19th century, smaller colleges were founded to help young men transition from rural farms to urban occupations. Prestigious colleges at the time became more exclusive by concentrating on the children from wealthy families, ministers and a few others. Those prestigious colleges and universities are still very exclusive today mainly due to their expensive tuition. Students who attend these colleges are generally from wealthy families, have scholarships for high academic achievements or graduate with extremely high loan debts. In the early 20th century, junior colleges or now known as community colleges were created to prepare students for the final two years of college. Later in the 20th century state colleges were created to provide higher education at a lower tuition cost. Due to the rise of community and state colleges, students now have the opportunity for higher education, and college became part of the American dream for both students and their parents. Over the past, half a century students have been working diligently to prepare for college with the hopes of graduating with a degree that will provide them with the career of their dreams and to earn large incomes. Slowly, over time the cost of tuition...

...10 September, 2015 Unforgiving College Expenses Many young adults have a misconception of how significant student loan debt is. In addition, many form a false sense of security and seem to believe that if you have a four-year degree you are guaranteed a financial success. This however is not true, the constant push for a college education society places on young adults makes college very misconceiving. High schools and parents push students to go to college. High school administrators and parents alike encourage students to trek the college path at every given oppturnity. Posters displayed on Deer Valley High School walls frequently compare degrees and income levels. For instance, a high school graduate can expect to earn roughly 1.2 million dollars in a lifetime. A college graduate’s average earnings ascend to 2.1 million dollars. A master’s degree recipient would observe his/her average income increase by 400,000 dollars, while a doctorate level graduate tops everyone at a whopping 3.4-million-dollar lifetime earnings (“Burleson Consulting”). Parents are major influences on adolescents’ thoughts and decisions. While parents often adamantly encourage their children to attend college, rarely is there mention of the potentially taxing expense of doing so. College expenses have increased drastically. According to an article from U.S. News and World Report, a contrast between the previous generation and today’s is the expense of a college degree (Berger). The average annual...

...College sports have always been enjoyable and entertaining to watch. March Madness and the College Football Playoffs are some of the most exciting sports events to view. The Super Bowl and NBA playoffs may be exciting too, but the key difference between professional athletes and collegiate athletes is that college athletes do not get paid. Many professional athletes play for money, so the passion may not be there. College athletes on the other hand, play for pride, their school, and for their team. The passion is obviously there, so it makes the game more intense, more energetic, and more intense. In recent years, a conflict has occurred as in deciding if college athletes should receive a salary or not. College athletes should not get paid...

...14 Feb, 2013 Informative Syntheses #1 (1,105) An Investigation into the Purpose of Higher Education Completing college is a significant accomplishment in a young adult’s life. More and more studies show whether or not college is worth the investment, the debt, and the promised career. Many professional educators and students are debating on the various costs and benefits of obtaining a college degree. Some might think that after completing college, it would land a great career and a prosperous life but that is not the case. As students are increasingly attending or entering college, it gradually gets stressful and mentally exhausting. Classes expand, lectures become dull and redundant, and teachers become overwhelmed with students. There is a possibility that there are too many students attending college, or maybe students nowadays are simply not mentally prepared for higher education. Perhaps the main issue could be the high expense of tuition, or maybe students just do not want to pursue higher education. To most students, obtaining a bachelor’s degree can lead to significant life-style changes by ultimately increasing their pay rate. However, Professor Hacker of political science disagrees with this statement—he believes that going to college is an “intellectual, aesthetic, and ethical” (Hacker) experience. In other words, he argues that college is not solely an academic experience; rather, it should help to develop more well-rounded citizens in a way that benefits...

...Governors University The Progressive Path: A New Approach for the Modern Student Recent college graduate…in debt. Early to mid-twenties…in debt. No retirement or emergency savings…in debt. Minimal work experience…in debt. Too many Americans are subject to this common denominator…in debt. For far too long we have become accustomed to the monotony and strenuous financial burden of at least four years of college immediately following four years of high school. At times, this may be a wise path for a student to follow but we as a society need to take a step back to analyze whether or not this truly is the best path in the long run. According to Barbara King (2015), an assistant professor of mathematics at Florida International University, when she collected data pertaining to 1,947 students majoring in Life Science, Business, Social Science, Education, Humanities, and Physical Science/Engineering, she found that 37% of them switched their major, thus delaying their graduation and increasing their debt obligation. Any student planning on taking full responsibility for their tuition should consider delaying enrollment in higher education after high school to make way for an entry-level position because they are more likely to graduate with a lower debt obligation, they will enjoy a more bountiful retirement, and they will most likely be both financially literate and free. By delaying enrollment, a high school graduate can apply for an entry-level position at a company that employs positions...

...Week 10 Discussion 1 From the scenario, suggest one (1) method in which Herb could use a cost-benefit analysis to argue for or against an expansion. Create three (3) optimal decision rules for Katrina’s Candies (e.g.., whether to hire more staff or hire temporary workers to meet production schedules). The cost-benefit analysis that Herb could use to argue for or against an expansion would be the Net Present value method. Net Present Value (NPV) is the present value of net cash inflows generated by a project including salvage value, if any, less the initial investment on the project. It is one of the most reliable measures used in capital budgeting because it accounts for time value of money by using discounted cash inflows. The Net Present Value relies on the concept of opportunity cost to place a value on cash inflows arising from capital investment. Opportunity cost is the calculation of what is scarified or foregone as a result of a particular decision. It is also referred to as the “real” cost of taking some action. It relies on the concept of opportunity cost to place a value on cash inflows arising from capital investment. Present value is the cash equivalent now of a sum receivable at a later date. If we didn’t spend that money and banked it instead, the opportunity cost includes both the initial sum and the interest earned. The Net Present Value method is a technique where cash inflows expected in future years are discounted back to their present value. This...
