...Growing up, my mother pushed me to thrive in everything I did, and this discipline created a deep hunger to succeed. Throughout my life, my mom has taught me to always give my best and to never be satisfied with just getting by. I have taken these lessons and applied them to all aspects of my life: school, sports, work. There is not a single time that my mother was not encouraging me. Whether it be on a math test, during a soccer game, or at a field day event in elementary school, my mom has been my number one fan. Because of her, I strive to make every goal, ace every test, and win every first place ribbon. During my twelve years of school, my mother has endured long hours of studying and homework alongside me. When a problem frustrates me she assures me that I will understand it, and helps me to do so. As a senior in high school and as a young adult, I have made my share of mistakes. Regardless, my mother has always found a way to use my mistakes to better me. Though at the time I was frustrated and upset, in hindsight I was fortunate to have someone to show me that learning from my mistakes would help me grow. I have cherished these lessons and hope to continue living by them through college and throughout my...

We all had a race of about 40 yards on the football field, the grass was freshly cut that morning and as soft as my bed. I witnessed one I was ready to leave the rest of the team in my dust. Within the first 20 yards, I was in the lead and started to accelerate more to make sure I crushed the competition, but without about 15 yards left, I saw a white little flash next to...

...Freshman year for me was intimidating. A new school the big lockers, seniors, and classes all had me nervous. I thought the craziest thing about it was all of the freedom that I had been given. I actually had the opportunity to pick what I wanted to eat. I always stuck with ala carte because they served fries every day. Also, I was now allowed to wear shorts or flip flops whenever I wanted. I thought that part of freedom was amazing, but I never took advantage of the flip flop rule. Playing high school sports was probably the scariest part though. Soccer has always come to me like second nature. So when summer soccer tryouts came I was conditioned and prepared for whatever they threw at me. I worked so hard and I earned a varsity jersey and...

...I slowly turned my head towards my running back Dylan Stefanich and spit out between tears, “This game is over.” Dylan and I played football together since the first grade, at first football was closer to a game of tag, with our dads trying to corral us into the huddle and persuading us with promises of treats after the game. We grew up together; and together, we grew up with football. We stood on the sidelines now, watching the end zone clock tick away faster than ever before, as if it had someplace better to be. We begged and prayed our defense could get us back on the field, to give us one more shot to tie the game. Our prayers were left unanswered as the clock displayed a large 0:00. Our high school football careers were over, and there was nothing we could do about it. Soon after, I lost Dylan in the swarm of maroon and hideous blue jerseys at midfield....

...its 40th anniversary, its policies and impacts on both men’s and women’s sports is still greatly debated and argued. While it is proven fact that it was tremendously successful at providing women far greater opportunities both in sports and outside of sports, the topic of how it is negatively affecting men’s sport is often debated. The five articles that I gathered advocate for Title IX. They express its positive impacts through narrative accounts and personal experiences of well-known female athletes who prospered due to Title IX not just in sports, but in their educational and professional careers. They also disprove the myths commonly associated with Title IX that lack evidence about how it is responsible for negatively affecting men’s sport opportunities and potentially ruining the programs currently in existence. Title IX is generally associated with women’s opportunity in sports to the point where its other positive implications tend to be forgotten. Title IX isn’t just about providing an opportunity for women to participate in sports in high school and at the college level, it is about providing young women the skills needed to achieve greater successes later on in life. Pugmire’s (2013) article quotes Women’s basketball legend Anne Meyers Drysdale saying the following: “According to the Women's Sports Foundation, 80% of women in Fortune 500 companies played sports. It teaches you so much -- confidence, failure, success, courage, how to get along. That's the business world...

...A Comparative Analysis of Nike and Adidas Commercials * A Multimodal Approach to Building Brand Strategies Mads Nørgaard Hansen Dennis Gade Pedersen BA Marketing and Management Communication Supervisor: Carmen Daniela Maier Department of Language and Business Communication Aarhus School of Business Aarhus University 2010 A Comparative Analysis of Nike and Adidas Commercials * A Multimodal Approach to Building Brand Strategies Mads Nørgaard Hansen and Dennis Gade Pedersen Abstract Heavy competition in the sports industry has caused organisations like Nike and Adidas to focus on more than just selling sportswear- and equipment. Organisations need to differentiate themselves and focus on both product attributes and brand values when creating brand strategies. Therefore, we have found it interesting to see how Nike and Adidas communicate their branding strategy differently and have set up the following hypothesis and questions: In Nike and Adidas commercials the organisations make use of complex multimodal choices in order to communicate their branding strategies. 1. Which multimodal choices do Nike and Adidas employ in order to communicate their branding strategies? 2. Which personality traits are similar and different in Nike and Adidas product and value commercials? Due to the complexity of our hypothesis, we will employ three frameworks: social semiotics, film theory, and branding. These frameworks will help us to analyse and...

...the cognitive tools required for academic and professional success. On January 19th, 2014, the day of the NFL NFC Championshp, the stakes could not have been greater; Richard Sherman was just thirty seconds away from his first Super Bowl. Sherman’s Seattle Seahawks led the San Francisco 49ers 23-17, leaving the 49ers with a final opportunity to win the game. The 49ers ran a play for Michael Crabtree, whom Sherman was guarding, who was making his way into the end zone. Sherman, the NFL’s best cornerback, leaped with Crabtree and tipped the pass towards a teammate in a historic play that ended the 49ers season and, in turn, catapulted both Richard Sherman and the Seattle Seahawks into the history books. Sherman, who has had publicized personal problems with Crabtree in the past, made an emphatic choking motion before sprinting over to a deflated Crabtree and extending his hand in a sarcastic attempt to wish his opponent a good game, to which Crabtree responded to by shoving Sherman away. What happened next...

He has written many novels for young adults including the sequel to The Chocolate War (Beyond the Chocolate War, 1985). Cormier wrote The Chocolate War based on a true life experience “in which his son was the only person in his class to refuse to sell chocolates for a high school fund raiser” (Young, 9). The Chocolate War was published by Pantheon in New York, New York in 1974. The Chocolate War tells the story of “a young boy's struggle against the conformity imposed on him by the restrictive atmosphere of an all-male Catholic prep school as well as by the demands of the Vigils, a secret group that the school does not officially condone but whose existence and infractions it ignores” (The Chocolate, 15). The novel opens with our protagonist, Jerry Renault, a freshman in high school still “emotionally bruised after his mother’s death, is handed a typical assignment...

By the very definition of humanity, we must be. Humanity: benevolence, understanding and kindness towards other people. It is, arguably, our very human nature to feel compassion, courage, understanding, unity and empathy towards our fellow man. Unfortunately, prejudice and judgement also cling to the human condition like tumorous stains – traits which society still finds hard to surmount. Despite the efforts of governments, groups and individuals, humankind still finds it difficult to trust based on the soul of a person; we are more comfortable making judgements based on skin colour. ...Personal Narrative- Track Competition The moment of truth was upon me. The official times, this includes whom qualified for finals, for the 400m relay had been posted. My eyes scanned the page for the bold letters that spell ANDERSON. As I ran my finger across the page to where the times were posted, my ears began to shut out all outside noises, leaving me alone with the thump of my heart and the inhale and exhale of my lungs. Both began to increase in speed as my eyes narrowed in on the time. My sophomore year had begun and I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to do track this year. Last year I played football in the fall and soccer in the spring. Not really enjoying it, the decision was made to play " real futbol" (soccer) in the fall, leaving the spring sports season open. My friend kept telling me how fun track was, so I decided to give it a try. As the first meet neared, things were going well. I made it onto the 4x100 team making me the third fastest kid on the team. The other members of the relay were Jason Schmidt, Jeremy Willard and Rodney Schmidt. Jason and Jeremy were both the top dogs and Rodney and I were second from the bottom of the barrel. The 400 relay was my best event. We placed in every meet and even took home some medals as the season progressed. As the track year rounded for the home stretch, we had only three more meets to compete in: the Tiger Invitational, regionals, and state. As the Tiger rolled around, there arose a question...
