...During my four years in high school, the counselor that made a difference in my life was definitely Marla Frantum. Throughout my years at Norwalk High School, Ms. Frantum has genuinely cared about my well being in various situations. During homecoming, I took on the responsibility of planning almost all of the days of activities up to homecoming and decorating the dance for student council. She would come up to me in the hallway everyday to make sure that I was not too stressed out to do well in my classes on top of all the planning I was doing. I really appreciated that she would ask me how I was doing, because even other students in student council would not acknowledge all the hard work I was doing for them. Another situation was when my...

...Freshman year at Trimble Tech High School was nothing short of a liminal year. High school basically swallowed me whole as a freshman, and spit me out as an unrecognizable senior. In this sense, I’ve become a completely different person. In my four years at Trimble Tech, I had a metamorphosis with my outlook on life and mentality. As a sophomore, my AP World History class enlightened me to the vast number of religions in the world. Prior to this, I was religiously ignorant because the concept of religion could not be discussed in public school. By the end of sophomore year, my brain was occupied with the various teachings of the diverse religions of the world. As a result, I’ve learned to look at things from a number of varying perspectives...

...I went to ready and Meridian high schools band concert. I went to this concert because by friend also senior in high school was performing. This concert was a pretty good, I enjoyed going to it as well as had a good time. Their take on turning popular songs that we here today on the radio is pretty cool. My reasoning on writing on this concert is because of the fact that it was my friends last one as well as I could talk to him about what he has learned over the years as well as the view point of someone who grow up through the band setting. This band seems to be changing with the times, still using the classical instruments making the classical style into their own style doing this. The concert was pretty good, watching and listen I have found a new understanding of this type of music because of taking this class. Now when I watch a concert like this I more following the instruments and taping my foot along. Their style of music was cool doing songs like pirates of the Caribbean, Hymn song as well as Brooke Park. They start every concert with the Meridian hawk’s anthem. There was a lot of things that I saw that we have learned in class. We see all the classic instruments that we learned about. There was an electric guitar a more common drum set that we see used to day, but with those small thing it was pretty easy to look through and list of...

...My three years at Bamberg Ehrahardt High school, I had a teacher who made a positive influence on me. He always had a smile on his face, jokes to tell, and most importantly a willing heart to teach. He showed me how to improve my leadership skills and communication skills. He showed me how to better myself as a citizen. His name is 1st Sergeant Smith. 1st Sergeant Smith was by my side since he came to Bamberg to teach JROTC. Before he arrived to this school, I was very quiet and to myself. I never participated in anything and my studying skills were very horrible. 1st Sergeant pushed me to studying more and my grades improved. He made a study log for his cadets that really helped us out a lot and this skill helped me study for each of my classes...

...Sociological Reflections on High School: a media analysis of Glee The following is a paper I wrote for a sociology class and I have been thinking alot about group dynamics and fitting in and the difference a close knit group of friends can make in one person's life...more on that topic to come. The minority to be analyzed is the subordinate group in the high school environment. More specifically: how can membership in a subordinate group perceived as “bottom of the rung”, enhance the cohesiveness of that socially subordinate group in the adolescent environment, and how does the subgroup attempt to overcome the negative perception imposed on them? The hypothesis being that members of a social group with specific goals, perceived as subordinate and influenced by the social superiority of their peers will bond as a result of common social maltreatment as well as common goals. The results of this study can provide an understanding of the realistic ability for high school aged children to develop healthy relationships despite their subordinate status within their social environment and whether this idea is accurately represented in the media. Literature Review In addressing the concrete definition and study of cohesion, Moody and White explain the ongoing issue of cohesion this way: “Although questions about social cohesion lie at the core of our discipline, definitions are often vague...

...Name: Tonya Heffington Date: September 15, 2014 Life Event: The significant, uplifting, positive experience/event from my life would be graduating high school. Explanation: Graduating high school was a challenge for me. I had my son half way through my junior year in high school. I continued high school after having my son but did my school work from home for the second half of my junior year. I would turn in my work weekly to the school counselor. I then attended high school full time my senior year. I was completely responsible for my son as his father wasn't around. It was probably the hardest thing I have done in my life. Sometimes running on only hours of sleep I would force myself to get up, walk my son to daycare and go to school. I had to work hard to make sure he had everything he needed and still try to focus on school work. I graduated with honors. Reflection: Graduating high school and being able to walk across that stage holding my son made me feel very proud of myself. I felt like I could and would make it in this big world. It was a very special moment in my life. At one point I didn't think I would make it and some others didn't as well but I showed my self and everyone that I did it! Life Event: The significant, uplifting, positive experience/event from my life would be getting married to my husband. Explanation: Getting married to my husband was significant to me because we had to overcome some major road bumps. My husband...

...Reflections of Then, Later, and Now James PSY 202 Ms. Ramsey March 13, 2011 Reflections of Then, Later, and Now When I was younger I imagined that everyone that was grown had been made that way from birth. As a child my mind wondered many things. How did parents become parents? Did children stay young forever? Can you think back when you where a child and all the questions that you asked your parents? Some of adults today may say that your child is a reflection of you when you where younger. Everything we did growing can be related to our thought process now. The decisions we made during the times when we understood also has a reflection of the person you are today. I was very young when I started pre-school. The school was made for little children so that you could start to learn the basic fundamental. Sharing, coloring, and learning the alphabetic symbols with other kids to seemed fun. I didn’t understand that I was also learning to tight my shoes along with other fundamentals that made the school fun. My sister and first cousin also attended the school with me. Whenever we all were together we had so much fun. Sometimes I think about those days such as right now. Entering my first grade seemed a little strange to me. I attended a catholic school which had mass on certain days? This church was different from the Baptist church I regularly attended on Sundays. I didn’t understand the reason why other kids did not have churches in schools either...

...governments may require it as a part of citizenship requirements, typically in lieu of military service; courts may demand it in lieu of, or in addition to, other criminal justice sanctions – when performed for this reason it can also be known as community payback; schools may mandate it to meet the requirements of a class, such as in the case of service-learning or to meet the requirements of graduation. High school graduation and community work Many educational jurisdictions in the United States need students to do community service hours to graduate from high school. In some high schools in Washington State, for example, students must finish 200 hours of community service to get a diploma. Some of the Washington school districts, including Seattle Public Schools, differentiate between community service and "service learning," requiring students to demonstrate that their work has contributed to their education. If a student in high school is taking an AVID course, community service is needed. Other high schools don't require community service hours for graduation, but still see an impressive number of students get involved in their community. For example, in Palo Alto, CA, students at Palo Alto High School log about 45,000 hours of community service every year. As a result, the school's College and Career Center awards about 250–300 students the President's Volunteer Service Award every year for their hard work. Colleges Though technically not a requirement, many colleges...

...It is Thursday, March 10, 2016, and I am in a 9th grade classroom of a primary school in a suburb of Copenhagen. The students come from primarily white, middle class backgrounds, and the class is entirely ethnically Danish. I use my time in the practicum to prompt students’ self-reflection in an examination of their knowledge and experiences with privilege. I have employed several hands on activities to help students visualize and contextualize the privilege that exists within a seemingly homogenous class. It is a crisp 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the middle of an outdoor quad, with 18 students, one teacher, and me. Students are participating in an activity where they step up or step back if they agree with a personal statement that I read from...

(2) Literacy Training Service trains the students to become teachers to less fortunate school children, out-of-school youth and other indigent people who have been neglected for the opportunity of learning. (3) Civic Welfare Training Service is a program that trains the students to contributing for the general welfare of the life of the members of the community. During my first year in Xavier University I have taken up the required one-year formative and holistic program the NSTP LTS 1 and 2. There were only 2 main agenda of the program and those were the 1) Class Session which includes Reflection and Reporting and, 2) The Work Area/Community Exposure which includes Assessment of the student being handled by us or the tutee, Reflection and Reporting. Literature Training Service (LTS) mainly focuses on the enrichment of children’s or tutees learning skills that were living in the rural areas. During the first half of the semester we were first trained various lessons and activities that we need to reflect later on. The training includes enhancing our own skills on how to teach young children, training and on how to be good leaders for the youth...

...teacher of students at a public therapeutic school, I feel that we have a connection, if only as fellow educators. Most teachers only want the best for their students. I am against the thought of “banking education” (pouring information into a student, and then the students spit the information back out) as I know you are. In my former school for “troubled children,” the teachers and other staff had power over the students. This was for safety concerns, such as suicide. I know that you are known for actively sharing power, and believe in power “with the people.”In your work with marginalized people you never blamed the victim, as is often done. I know that you are famous, but you also identify with common people and educators like me. Our school has had many issues primarily with our funding. But the main problem is (I realize that you like to name the problem first) that I and other former teachers are getting ready to lose our retirement benefits! We worked extra hours weekly at our local community elementary school to ensure that our benefits would be available when we retired! Now when many of us need more income, it is going to be reduced, or discontinued. This problem can easily be explained. The funds were redirected to a fleet of expensive cars that are being driven around by public school board members. Now that the problem has been defined, action in the form of a lawsuit must be taken. Serious dialogue, reflection, and an attempt to find common ground will...

...April 2015 Savage Inequalities Reflection This Savage Inequalities: Children in America’s Schools was written by Jonathan Kozol and published in 1991. The book scrutinizes the American public school system and drastic funding differences between schools in underprivileged urban neighborhoods versus their more affluent suburban counterparts. Kozol visited schools in all parts of the country, including New Jersey, Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Texas, and Missouri. The book takes a dark and contradictory stance than the typical ideas portrayed that everyone receives an unbiased and quality education in the United States. Kozol explores reoccurring themes of privilege, wealth, poverty, racism, injustice, and inequity within the public school system. He focuses on the point that schools in the deprived areas often lack the most basic needs, such as heat/AC, textbooks & supplies, running water, and functioning sewer facilities. Kozol informs his readers to these atrocities by using basic arithmetic, logical conclusions and profoundly thought provoking graphic details about the horrendous conditions of urban children’s schools. In addition he thoroughly examines the driving socioeconomic factors that hinder each school. In order to be most thorough, Kozol observed both schools with the lowest per capita spending on students and the highest per capita spending and found some shocking facts about America’s school system. This essay is a reflection to those deplorable realities...

...“Where I Was’ Reflection Colby Gordillo ITT Tech GS 1145 Bart Demeter July 5, 2014 “Where I Was” Reflection . A few years ago I graduated from high school, and started working in the factory industry one month after. A few months later I attended college at Grand Rapids Community College. At that time, I did not know I was going to fail and drop out three times at that same college. And, then attend two other colleges. All of this had happened in the past 4 years. The reason as to why I had failed so many times was that I was not ready for school. I felt that I was ready because of just finishing high school, and that I would have that same mentality. Apparently I was wrong about that and it took me a few years to realize that. The first time I attended GRCC; I completed the first four weeks and then I dropped out. The second time I attended GRCC; I had to get off suspension and then I completed about two months, until I dropped out again. After that, I took a year off from school. When a year had passed I tried to return but I was on suspension once again. This time I was suspended from school and financial aid. By that time, I realized that I had dug a hole after my first fall out and it just got bigger. This hole had gotten so big, that I saw no point in attending GRCC anymore. I tried out the University of Phoenix and completed the first quarter with an A and B. I decided I didn’t like the online experience. Less than a month after, I signed up for ITT Tech. I...

...Psychology to Modern Life Name Name of the Institution Application of Psychology to Modern Life Self-reflection entails evaluating oneself to analyze the past experiences in their lifetime that might have either a negative or positive influence. Self-reflection helps to come up with techniques of coping with similar situations later in life. Self-reflection also involves picking a personal experience, and evaluating the challenges as per the situation and naming ways in which one was able to overcome the challenges or perhaps failed to address them. This essay involves a self-reflection in one of my most stressful lifetime situation and how I managed to cope up with it. The Stressful Situation Back in high school, my dream was to excel academically so that I could pursue a Business Management degree by getting a scholarship to study at Oxford University. Bearing that in mind, I had to work hard to attain a grade that will enable me to get the scholarship. The reason as to why I always wanted to get the sponsorship is because I was pretty sure that my parents would not afford to pay school fees in any university. I worked extremely hard in my studies, spending sleepless nights, forming discussion groups and sacrificing my social life so that I could have more time to concentrate on my studies. After leaving high school, I was pretty sure that I had done my best to achieve the grade that I always wanted. After the results had been released...
