...A belief that I have come to hold after starting high school is that private schools fall short of the most important benefits that public schools have to offer. I have learned this through my own personal experience of going to a catholic grammar school for nine years, and then transitioning to the public high school that I currently attend. Of course, the main purpose of going to school is to gain a good education that will help you be successful in the future. This belief I do hold true; both private and public schools grant this opportunity. But public schools and private schools each grant an entirely different social experience, and the social experience, in my opinion, is much more valuable than the academic experience. Along with gaining an education, part of being successful in life is learning how to interact and form relationships with people who are different from you. In grammar school, the majority of the people I met were white, Catholic, and of the same learning ability. Every day at school, students were expected to wear uniform clothes, uniform hair styles, and learn at a uniform pace. There were no accommodations for people with slower learning paces; everyone was expected to keep up. Growing up, this is how I expected all schools were like. For nine years I was almost blinded to the fact that people of different religion and learning pace, even physical appearance, even existed in the real world. But the fact is there are more types of people than Catholics...

...Chelsie Rangeloff Sara Tangdall English Comp II 30 April 2014 Gap Year: The Beneficial Alternative “I thought it would be exciting to go there, and of course it was.” Alexander Sullivan was accepted into Columbia University, but instead of transitioning into the university out-right he asked to differ enrollment. Alexander, instead, decided to travel to China where he studied Mandarin, and after a while found a job as a research assistant at the Newsweek Beijing bureau and at Voice of America radio news. (Hulstrand 52). A gap year as explained by Holly Bull, the founder and president of the Center for Interim Programs (CIP), one of the first and longest running providers of gap year programs in the country, is “a period of time for students to creatively step away from the lock-step path of high school to college, to graduate school, or job” (77). Enrolling in college immediately after high school graduation is not always the right decision for seniors that are lacking motivation and unsure what to academically pursue in post secondary education. Acknowledging that not every high school senior has to continue their education without delay after high school is a concept that advisors as well as parents need to understand. They should provide possibilities for those students whom lack motivation to continue their educational paths immediately after graduation. Many high school seniors feel pressured to start college immediately after graduating because sending in college...

...Michael Val Bolibol Prof. Michals English 49 12/1/13 Taking a Gap year Do you believe that “School” sounds exhausting? For twelve years students need to be at school for seven hours. It can be really exhausting if you ask any student. In my own experience it required a lot of hard work and perseverance to finish twelve year of school. Especially, during senior year which is the hardest year among them all because it is the last step to be able to graduate and attend a college or a university. After high school there are countless of options for a students. Some of these options are to go directly to colleges or find a job and live with the money they earn. There are also students who take a year off to explore and realize what they want to do in their future. Either way, I believe that it make sense for a student after high school to take a year off because a person needs to realize what they want to do in life, they can be more independent with their lives, and a year of relaxing from the exhaustion of twelve years of school. Graduating from school and having no idea what their future should be is really common in our society. In some cases the person is set on what they want in the future but most of the people after high school don’t have any idea on what to do. For example, Monika Lutz in the article “Delaying College to Fill in Gaps” by S. Shellenbarger, Ms. Lutz planned to take the year off and applied for a company. She was sent to India to bring solar power to...

...What is the next step after graduating high school? It is that time of year where students are graduating from high school and planning to further their education. If you were like me last year, you are more than likely wondering what is expected at college. When I first started college I was so nervous because I didn’t know what to expect or what was expected of me. Now, I feel college life is so much more enjoyable then high school. I have so much more control over my education and more freedom. This paper will address the main differences from high school to college such as college scene, academic level, and rewarding experience. A college scene has a different scene then high school. Social activities are one of the biggest differences transitioning from high school to college. I think the social scene is so much more different than high school because you have more freedom such as choice of college and residence. You have the ability to choose where to reside at whether it is on campus or outside of campus. Most students attending college live on campus and experience the unsupervised and independent lifestyle. At college you will be experiencing your own rules and living on your own. Therefore, you will be subjected to different social activities. This means they are subjected to pressure and temptations. It is important to choose activities that you are comfortable with and not letting someone else pressure you into something you don’t believe in. At college people...

...Some school districts offer programs that allow high school students to graduate in three years instead of the traditional four years. Usually students do not graduate three early due to extra curricular activities such as sports or clubs. In most cases, teenagers graduate at the age of either seventeen or eighteen as well as receive their diploma in May. I believe students should should not graduate in three years for the reason that they would have no time out of school due to mandatory classes, stress from classes, as a consequence they would miss the joyful memories of high school. Students would have no time out of school in view of all the homework they will receive. These homework assignments include classes such as math, history, english,...

...college grade point average (GPA) for students specially admitted into an academic support program for at-risk students. The research was conducted at a private, highly-selective, research university in the southwest United States. The primary determining factors for this special admission program are lowerthan-average high school GPA and/or standardized test scores. Pre-college variables that most significantly predicted college GPA were high school GPA, gender of student, and leadership experience prior to applying. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores failed to predict success as measured by college GPA. Beyond Admission Seventy-five percent of students who drop out of college do so during their first two years, and 57 percent of students leave their first college without graduating (Tinto, 1993). First semester grades (McGrath & Braunstein, 1997) and first year grades (Gifford, Briceño-Perriott, & Mianzo, 2006; Reason, 2003) are significantly linked with retention. Because these grades act as a quantifiable predictor of retention and because grades are associated with academic success, this study focuses on the predicting of first-semester and first-year GPA of at-risk...

...My Writing experience: The Good The Bad and The Ugly I can recall a time when I had to write a paper for English Composition I. I was attending Ivy Tech Community College at that time. The professor asked the class to write a paper about our major, my major was Early Childhood Education. This experience I had at Ivy Tech was not my first when it came to writing a formal essay, but it was just as nerve wrecking as the first time. When I began writing formal essay papers, in high school, it was not easy for me. In the first part of this essay, I review my experience with writing in my childhood, then I will be talking about my terrifying writing experience in high school, and finally the years that have passed since I have not written any formal essays. In the second part of the paper, I describe my experience with Microsoft word, my experience with using MLA formatting style, and my experience using documentation in research papers. In my childhood, I have been state to state and attended...

...Overview An athletic director (commonly "athletics director" or "AD") is an administrator at many american colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, who oversees the work of coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic programs (ehow.com). They are in charge of an athletic department at a high school, college or university and at some colleges, the athletic director may hold academic rank. They are usually considered to be full-time administrators instead of, full time faculty members. Although technically in charge of all of the coaches, they are often far beyond well-compensated and also less famous, with few having their own television and radio programs as many coaches now do. In this paper I plan to describe the duties of an athletic coach, career paths, educational requirements and benefits of becoming an athletic Director. Athletic Director Job Description The Athletic director oversees funding and budgets for school athletic programs and are responsible for ensuring that the various teams at a school receive a fair distribution of resources. They may have to make tough decisions about how to allocate money. They work with coaches to ensure school and division regulations are being followed but don't usually handle the direct coaching and training of athletes. However, they usually oversee the hiring and firing of trainers and coaches. In addition to managing the...

...Education or Experience? It Depends. Shai Walker Webster University Author Note This paper was prepared for Staffing and Selection HRMG 5800, Section 54, taught by Professor Karns. Abstract Can experience make up for the lack of a degree, or does a degree provide something that experience cannot? Is one more valuable than the other? Talk about a discussion that will have you chasing your tail! It's truly a trap debate because the right answer is "it depends". Whether it's a completely strategic discussion about your organization's policies or a discussion involving a specific position and candidate, this issue continually resurfaces at organizations. And depending on what side of the fence you sit, this issue can be very personal and emotional. Obviously, there are specific cases where the question is debatable. If you need a registered professional engineer to approve plans, the degree requirement is a given. If you're a hospital looking for a surgeon, you're probably seeking someone with a PhD in medicine. However, the scope of positions that may or may not require a degree gets gray pretty fast, and the span is pretty wide. And, no industry is immune to this issue. Keywords: experience, degree, organizations, policies, professional, requirement, industry. Education or Experience? It Depends. Take this scenario: Bob and Joe are both applying for the same job. They each interview well, but Bob has 15 years’ experience and no college degree, and Joe is fresh...

...positive experience/event from my life would be graduating high school. Explanation: Graduating high school was a challenge for me. I had my son half way through my junior year in high school. I continued high school after having my son but did my school work from home for the second half of my junior year. I would turn in my work weekly to the school counselor. I then attended high school full time my senior year. I was completely responsible for my son as his father wasn't around. It was probably the hardest thing I have done in my life. Sometimes running on only hours of sleep I would force myself to get up, walk my son to daycare and go to school. I had to work hard to make sure he had everything he needed and still try to focus on school work. I graduated with honors. Reflection: Graduating high school and being able to walk across that stage holding my son made me feel very proud of myself. I felt like I could and would make it in this big world. It was a very special moment in my life. At one point I didn't think I would make it and some others didn't as well but I showed my self and everyone that I did it! When in high school think of it as some of your last few years of being a teen, after you go into what is signified as the “Real World”.
