Reflect on your high school year, think about your senior year. Think about your anticipation to go out into the world, to go to college, to work a job or a start a new career. Did you know what you wanted to do? If you did know, how did you know? Was you inspired, did someone from a career field come and talk to your class and sparked the interest that changed your life? Bring someone in from the career field of engineering to speak to our class. A large amount of the young minds in this class are creative and technology oriented. If an engineer came to talk our class the creative people could be inspired to create buildings and to design and engineer blueprints and floor plans to make the buildings of the future. ...Literacy as They Transition from High School to College Jana Varlejs, Professor Emerita, Rutgers, 612 S. First Avenue, Highland Park, NJ 08904, 732846-6850 Eileen Stec, Instruction & Outreach Librarian, Douglass Library, Rutgers, New Brunswick, NJ 08901, 848-932-5009 Hannah Kwon, PhD Student, Rutgers SC&I, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 Abstract Despite the considerable attention paid to the need to increase the information literacy of high school students in preparation for the transition to college, poor research skills still seem to be the norm. To gain insight into the problem, library instruction environments of nineteen high schools were explored. The schools were selected based on whether their graduates did well or poorly on information-skills assignments integrated in a required first-year college course. The librarians in the nineteen schools were asked to characterize their working relationships with teachers, estimate their students’ information-literacy achievement, and provide data on their staffing and budgets. Findings suggest that school librarians are seldom in a position to adequately collaborate with teachers and that their opportunities to help students achieve information literacy are limited. Introduction The study reported in this paper was inspired by observations made by students in the Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey in the United States. For many years, MLIS students in both the Information...

Research Paper

...Catalfano Writing Mode: Persuasive Research Due: Please upload your essay to turnitin.com by the assigned due date. Late papers will incur the typical 10% per day late grade deduction. Length: Between 700 and 850 words for College Prep students; between 850 and 1000 words for Honors students. Format: Typed, double-spaced, 10-point Times New Roman font. Grading: 60 points, graded according to the standard rubric. (Note: this paper will also require two or three “checkpoints,” each of which is worth 10 points.) Topic Selection: What do you care about? This is a persuasive research paper, which means you are taking a position on a contemporary issue that you care about and setting out to prove that your position is correct with strong, convincing sources. How many sources? * at least four sources for College Prep students * at least six sources for Honors students Of course, you need to set out to support an idea that is capable and worthy of being supported—not something completely obvious. Because one of the major course objectives is to write about what you believe in (as you find your writing voice), you will be allowed to choose your own topic for this persuasive research paper, so long as it is not a topic you have written about already for another class (remember: your intellectual and personal integrity should be important to you, so research something new to you, which is most of the “fun” of research). I must also approve your topic...

Composition Paper

...My Writing Knowledge While looking over the material for this paper my first thought was I’m hungry. This is probably not a typical thought when trying to prepare an English paper. However, it gave me an interesting thought. Writing a paper is like making a cheeseburger. Aside from my cheeseburger idea I also attended a college preparatory high school and have also taken other English courses while in the Marine Corps. To make a cheeseburger you start off with the bottom bun. This is the introductory paragraph of your paper. The outside bottom of the bun is plain bread which is general, and this is the first sentence of your introductory paragraph. Moving up the bun it becomes more specific by either frying it, adding butter or mayonnaise. You make the rest of the paragraph more specific to lead into the following paragraph. The next paragraph is the first piece of meat. In relation to writing a paper this is your first main topic, a bold statement that the writer is trying to get across to the reader. This paragraph must contain the information gathered from research. Paraphrasing is a good way to incorporate your knowledge and understanding of the research and in doing this it explains the topic to the reader. The third paragraph is the cheese of the cheeseburger. This is a good place to add the details and quotes of the research to the paper. When using quotes you must cite them correctly to give credit to the author. By using facts and statistics it supports the...

Reflective Essay: The Effects Of The Pollution In The Chesapeake Bay

... how to find scholarly, peer reviewed sources, and how to use the Boatwright library website. In public school I was not taught the importance of scholarly work nor how to find it. The only time I was assigned a major research project was in my senior year of high school. I went to one of the specialty schools in the Richmond Public Schools system. Two of the requirements for graduation was the freshman paper and the senior thesis. Looking back, I remember how hard I was struggling in completing my freshmen paper. It was about the effects of the pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. The 10 page paper required extensive research with 350 flashcards, 3 drafts, and a class trip to the Chesapeake Bay at the end of...

...that, the advice is listed in no particular order. No doubt there will be points with which you disagree. That’s totally fine -- there are certainly points about which even we had differing views; however, before you decide to ignore these points, it’s well worth taking the time to understand why we included them. Becoming a PhD Student Why Get a PhD? This question is dealt with extensively in other documents, so we will not discuss it in detail here; however, we want to emphasize the importance of asking this question. Getting a PhD will change your career path dramatically. Not only does getting a PhD mean you will spend years in school (with both personal and financial implications), it will also change the type of career you pursue. While we are both happy we got PhDs, it isn’t the right decision for everyone. Before applying to graduate school, you should think hard about whether this is the right path for you. Some specific points to consider are as follows: 1. You have to really...

Premarital Sex Research Papers

...Premarital sex issexual intercourseengaged in by persons who areunmarried. It is generally used in reference to individuals who are presumednot yet of marriageable ageor between adults who will presumably marryeventually, but who are engaging insexual activityprior to marriage.Sex ispleasurable, but in God's view, the primary purpose of sex is not recreation, but rather re-creation. In other words, sex is for reproduction. God does notlimit sex to married couples to rob pleasure from those who are unmarried.Rather, God commands against premarital sex in order to protect unmarriedpeople from unwanted pregnancies, from children born to parents who donot want them, and to protect children from parents who are not preparedfor them. Imagine, for a moment, a world without premarital sex. Therewould be no sexually-transmitted diseases, there would be no un-wedmothers, there would be no unwanted pregnancies, there would be noabortions, etc. According to the Bible, abstinence is God's only policy when itcomes to premarital sex. Abstinence saves lives, protects babies, givessexual relations the proper value, and most importantly abstinence honorsGod.   Thus, as defined in the dictionary, an urge or shall we say, thoughts of manifesting them, is sex. (The Bible calls this lust) To have physicalintercourse is sex. Whether it is two unmarried partners or one married andone not - it is sex. Participating "up to a point" of actual physical intercourse, such as having oral sex, is sex. Societal...

For several decades, researchers have documented the gap between high school and college expectations, noting that even students who complete a college preparatory curriculum in high school are often poorly prepared for college. This lack of alignment contributes to high postsecondary remediation rates and hinders college completion. Over the years, state policymakers and education leaders have responded with a variety of wide-ranging and costly efforts, including the development of state-level content standards and assessments. However, these standards vary widely among states and generally lack sufficient rigor to assure readiness for credit bearing courses in college. It is...

Accounting Professor

...and Eric T. Rapley ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to provide a concise career guide for current and potential doctoral students in accounting and, in the process, help them gain a greater awareness of what it means to be an accounting professor. The guide can also be used by accounting faculty in doctoral programs as a starting point in mentoring their doctoral students. We begin with foundational guidance to help doctoral students better understand the “big picture” surrounding the academic accounting environment. We then provide specific research guidance and publishing guidance to help improve the probability of publication success. Actions are suggested that doctoral students and new faculty can take to help jump-start their academic careers. We finish with guidance regarding some important acronyms of special interest to doctoral students in accounting. Keywords: career guidance; doctoral students; research; publishing. INTRODUCTION igher education faces a severe, and growing, shortage of accounting professors. As a result, the job prospects for new accounting doctoral graduates are very good and are getting better. Starting salaries are increasing, but so are the requirements for tenure and promotion. In particular, the requirements to produce more and better research are growing in most schools. An ad hoc committee of the American Accounting Association ͑AAA͒ was formed approximately five years ago to assess the shortage of accounting faculty and...
