Leadership is necessary to bring cohesion to the distance education arena within higher education. Drucker (1998) maintained that in the latter part of the last century, technology resulted in a transformation of the social structure. We saw the “rise and fall of the blue-collar worker” (p. 539), the rise of the industrial worker who gave way to the rise of the knowledge worker...

...Faculty Forum / Re: Private University « on: November 02, 2012, 11:42:36 AM » Redefining the role of universities Hafiz G. A. Siddiqi Traditionally, a university is perceived as an institution that imparts higher education to produce all kinds of highly skilled manpower the society needs for its overall development. It undertakes research to create knowledge for national and global benefit. The universities and societies are interdependent. They help each other develop. In the final analysis a university is an institution of higher learning. However, this characterisation does not encompass all the roles a university plays. There was a time when roles of the universities were limited, elitist and exclusively for men. Oxford and Cambridge admitted women several centuries after they were established. The establishment of the oldest universities was church based. However, the intellectual discourses at the universities revealed a need for qualitative change in their role. By early 19th century, the modern universities dropped their elitist attire and started getting inclusive, admitting both men and women from all strata of society. The modern universities paved the way for rapid social and cultural changes, becoming more secular and democratic. The changes gradually transformed the universities into cultural institutions that mold young minds. Andre Beteille says: "University education became socially significant because, as open and secular institutions...

...Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Date The things someone does after learning in College or University is the most important thing than even the place where this person goes. People do not overrate someone’s purpose for going to the university or college. What a person chooses to do with his or her education is the most important thing. What people do not really understand is the purpose of the education they get. What is better, is it getting good education so that one has the necessary life skills or to just get a degree and then later land on a high paying job? Around the country, there are very many state schools which all offer excellent education. In the schools you can find many classmates from various states who have a similar burning urge to get education like you. (Mead, 832). Education in these state schools aims at a few things in transforming an individual. The education gained can be to nurture a person’s thought to various issues so that one can think critically. The education received is also important in exposing to an individual to the various accomplishments that man has done on earth (Ken, 437). Education also develops in a person an ability for an individual to respond intelligently to a question after listening to the question in an active manner (Ken, 437). If someone wishes to come out with the good gained in education in a college then Rebecca Mead will be in support of the college education the individual is very ready to know new things...

...M.S MARKETINGBRANDING DR. OSMAN KHANUNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL PUNJAB | HIGHER EDUCATION | LITERATURE REVIEW | HAFSA KHAN L1F15MSMK0007SAIRAZAKIR L1F15MSMK00085/28/2016 | LITERATURE REVIEW: THE CONCEPT OF BRANDING IN HIGHER EDUCATION Bennett and Ali-Choudhury ( 2007 p4 ) suggest that a university brand is “a manifestation of the institution’s features that distinguish it from others , reflect its capacity to satisfy students’ needs, engender trust in its ability to deliver a certain type and level of higher education, and help potential recruits to make wise enrolment decisions”. Stamp (2004) gives a number of factors for higher education (HE) branding agenda, that includes;tuition fees, competitive differentiation, league tables, organizations attaining university status and the miss-match between brand perceptions and delivery. Researchers have to continually ask why some organizations are more successful than others in brand building in order to understand branding.(Urde, 2003). It has been suggested that “Higher Education Institutions need to be managed more and more as corporate brands” (Whelan & Wohlfeil, 2006, p317), but instead of the fact that there is a large number of studies that examined image and reputation, the notion of branding has very little marks on higher education marketing literature (HemsleyBrown and Oplatka, 2006) and empirical papers that relate to HE branding are scarce (Hemsley-Brown and Goonawardana...

...Abstract This paper discusses the challenges that America is facing in the race to be first in the world regarding the importance of obtaining a higher education for a better workforce of the nation. The rapid increase in globalization of the 21st century has completely changed the course of the world allowing a vast open playing field and competition from every direction. Foreign students have gained access to the American workplace due to outsourcing and breached the job market for American workers who lack the necessary skillset and education qualifications. While the worldly competition in education has drastically increased, President Obama has addressed a goal for the nation by 2020-for America to be top in the highest proportion of college graduates of the world. One of the greatest challenges that plays as an obstacle for this goal is the problematic college access. On the contrary, Germany has found that college education is not a necessity at all and has successfully maintain a low unemployment rate. However, the economy and government of the United States is structured very differently, and the framework of Obama’s plan proved that a stronger educated population is directly correlated with a stronger nation itself. History and Theoretical Framework For much of America’s history, a college education was not needed to make a decent living as the difference between the average wages of high school and college graduates was very minor. After WWII, however, the growth...

...English 102 Jeremy Branstad December 3, 2011 Higher Education Education plays a major role in our society. We look to education for everything. Many individuals feel that there are different purposes for education. Some believe educations sole purpose is so we can learn. Others believe it’s so we can better ourselves financially. While others believe education is to help us develop discipline and power. Education is what makes the individual. In my opinion, education is what helps us get somewhere in our lives. There are many members in our society who believe that the whole purpose of higher education is so that we could be knowledgeable and be able to make the right choices in life, when it comes down to it. Some of us forget how crucial education is to our growth as individuals. One example of this would be Fredrick Douglas. He was born into slavery and had little options. He however, had been taught at an early age to read, unlike some other slaves. Fredrick Douglas once said, “I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition without a remedy. It opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out (97). In this passage Fredrick Douglas seems to have given all hope. Even through all depression he continued to read and better himself. He strived to find even more information, and be knowledgeable even if the knowledge/facts hurt. By teaching himself the basics...

...Essay 1 Draft 2 The artifact I chose to write about is Montclair State University’s Business Administration Major; with the focus in Sports, Events and Tourism marketing. This major helps student expands their knowledge and social skills revolving around sports, events and tourism. In this essay you will see comparisons and direct quotes from Mark Edmundson, Michael S. Roth, and James Baldwin. I want to show the connection of how important it is to find what you love and how money should be a factor in your undergrad study but not the only factor because you’ll be doing whatever you major in for the rest of your life. The business school’s mission statement for the program; “The Sports, Events, and Tourism Marketing program provides students the knowledge and skill sets to be successful in the growing workforce of the sports, events, and tourism sector. This program incorporates marketing concepts along with management skills to provide students with a diversified and competitive edge.” I was able to talk to a student who was studying my artifact. I asked him, “ are you in your study for the money or because you actually love what you’re going to do for the rest of your life?” he replied, “ I do like what I’m going to do, but I know there is a lot of money involved.” After talking to a student who was enrolled in this major, left me with the question, “ Is college about finding what you love or making a lot of money?” In class we had discussed the characterization of students...

...MOOCs as the Remedy for Higher Education Abstract Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have recently developed into a popular topic of discussion in higher education forum. Undeniably there are a lot of problems existing in current mode of traditional higher education such as affordability, quality and flexibility. This paper will argue that MOOCs serve as a remedy to address the problems of higher education. 1) MOOCs are made to be affordable to every student who would like to learn, resolving the affordability of higher education; 2) MOOCs initiated interactive classes through various technological applications, to enhance the quality of class learning; 3) MOOCs allow for flexibility to cater to people with different needs or difficulties. Overall, despite some of the limitations, MOOCs could still serve as a remedy to resolve some problems with current higher education but they are certainly not a replacement of traditional higher education. The technology boom has led to a new trend in higher education – MOOC mania. A Massive Open Online Course, by definition of Tamar Lewin in his “Universities Abroad Join Partnerships on the Web”, is an online course for large-scale interactive participation and open access via the web. Besides traditional course materials, MOOCs offer interactive forums that build a learning community that involves both teachers and students (Lewin). MOOCs are widely recognized by its interactive and convenient online learning platforms, and its...

...ENGLISH 121 Paper #2 Higher Education Submitted by Kenneth Jones Paper submitted to Professor: David Bushelle KENNETH JONES PROFESSOR: DAVID BUSHELLE ENGLISH 121 HIGHER EDUCATION Should a High School Graduate seek a higher education? If so what kind or type, for some years now it has been a lot of controversy on why should every high school graduate go to a college or university. What about trade school or apprenticeships at a company. Students who enter the workforce immediately upon high school graduation now need at least the same level of skills and knowledge as students entering college, as both universities and employers seek the same core abilities. We could trace higher education back to the sixth century B.C. Even then they taught skills to live by not thing that a person would not use in his or her life time. Here is a brief history on Higher Education that I found very interesting I hope you do too. “The oldest institutions of higher (college or university) education were started on the island of Cos, Greece, in about the sixth century B.C. These schools primarily taught medicine but also covered topics concerning the nature of humanity and the universe. A group called the Pythagoreans, who were followers of the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras (c. 580–500 B.C.), started the first schools of higher education in Italy. They taught philosophy and math in Greek. The great Greek philosophers Socrates (470–399 B.C.), Plato...

...Andy Harrison Ms. Elizabeth Weld English 101 September 18, 2014 The debate of higher education is always a hot topic in the United States. Many share the opinion that college is the way to go for success in this ultra competitive world, but on the other hand there are some who believe college may not be for everyone. Two articles discussing this topic are Mike Rose’s “My View: Should Everyone Go to College?” and Karen R. Lawrence’s article “What Value Really Means in Higher Education”. The articles similarly talk about how college is the best choice for one’s success in the future; however, the two articles differ in their overall messages they are trying to convey to the reader. Mike Rose’s focus is to make the readers who are potential college students think about college as a strong option. Rose uses his own personal life experiences, along with specific facts about education to paint a picture of how higher education is a viable option. On the other hand, Lawrence uses a more direct and sterile approach to convince her audience, of educational professionals, to focus on teaching specific abilities to their students. Karen Lawrence’s purpose is to persuade the reader that higher education should give one the tools needed to be successful in the real world beyond an immediate earning potential. The basis of her article is to illustrate the specific skills that need to be taught in higher education. She tries to convince the reader that college is about becoming a better...

...MEMORANDUM TO: Governor Charlie Baker CC: Matthew H. Malone, Secretary of Education FROM: , Analyst of Sate Higher Education RE: Higher Education Funding for State Universities. Date: November 7, 2014 I. Introduction Higher education is crucial to economic prosperity; it serves as the essential final step for students advancing through our state education system. The skills of a state workforce have grown progressively more important over the last three decades, with increasing educational completion correlated strongly with higher wages. Additionally, a recent study from Georgetown University revealed that approximately 62 percent of jobs will require some form of college education by the year 2018 compared to the mere 28 percent in 1973.1 Nevertheless, regardless of the evidence that college and higher education are essential to our future, Massachusetts has eliminated hundreds of millions of dollars from public higher education funds in recent years. When state support for the university and community college systems is reduced the students in those universities are forced to pay higher tuition and fees. With increasing costs, the amount of money a student must take out in loans also rises. Public higher education funding has suffered numerous dramatic cuts over the past decade. State spending on higher education, including funding for the UMass system, Community Colleges as well as State Universities has declined 31 percent from 2001 to 2013. Although state...

However, the system has many issues of concern at present, like financing and management including access, equity and relevance, reorientation of programmes by laying emphasis on health consciousness, values and ethics and quality of higher education together with the assessment of institutions and their accreditation. These issues are important for the country, as it is now engaged in the use of higher education as a powerful tool to build a knowledge-based information society of the 21st Century.
