Historical Background:
Kuoni Travel Holding Ltd. is one of the top five travel and tour groups in Europe. Its head office is in Zurich, Switzerland. Its core business activities are Leisure Travel, Business Travel and Incoming. Switzerland is its chief market. (Reference for Business 2011) The company employs more than 7500 staff in 300 different sites all over the world. (Kuoni 2011)

Alfred Kuoni first founded Kuoni in the year 1906 along with his brothers who had a successful freight-forwarding agency in Zurich. After returning from his work abroad in 1905, it was his idea to expand his brothers business with the addition of a travel agency. His first tours cost just one franc to a mountain in the outskirts of Zurich. Its first group tour outside of Switzerland was in the year 1907 when they organized an escorted group tour to Egypt. As a symbol of growth Kuoni was turned into a family joint-stock company in 1925. By the time The Second World War began it had opened several branches in Switzerland and an office in Nice (France). This trend of expansion continued as the years passed by as Kuoni opened its subsidiaries in Italy and France. In 1951 Kuoni became the first tour operator to fly chartered flights to Africa. 1957 saw Kuoni family establish Kuoni and Hugentobler Foundation to group their holding. In 1963 the company expanded into Asian market by opening a branch office in Japan. (Kuoni 2011)

In 1965 Kuoni entered the UK by acquiring Challis & Benson Ltd. This decision to enter the UK market paid off in the 1970s when the company changed its name into Kuoni Travel Ltd. (Reference for Business 2011) 1997 saw Kuoni and Peninsular and oriental Navigation Company (P&O) join hands to form a 50:50 joint venture P&O Travel Ltd. in Hon Kong. In 1999 Kuoni saw its dream to merge with UK based First Choice Holidays PLC shattered when First Choice shareholders decided otherwise. If this deal had come through it would have been a huge boost for the company. (Kuoni 2011) In 2011 Kuoni acquired Gulliver’s Travel Associate (GTA). This acquisition has transformed Kuoni into one of the leading destination management services in the world. (Kuoni 2011)

The Kuoni group sustains on its mission statement of “Reliability”, “Authenticity”, and “Passion”. With this mission statement in place, they thrive on presenting the “Perfect Moment” for their customers. (Kuoni 2011)

The merging of Kuoni’s Destination Management Business (KDM) and Gulliver’s Travel Associates (GTA) will result in formation of a global leader of online destination services. This arrival of new ideas will help strengthen Kuoni’s grip in the world of Tourism and help the company to exploit major global market trends.
