Hip Hop Pros And Cons

Hip-hop music has evolved greatly over the years and has started to gravitate into other genres of music that people enjoy, but in my generations’ music it has always been frowned upon and looked down on by older people who are not in our generation or don’t understand it. They don’t like or enjoy it because a lot of it does promote negative things such as gang violence, weapons, sexuality, and is a bad influence upon the younger generation to come. But what other generations fail to realize is that most rappers talk about their life experiences and real things going on and there are positive sides and positive people in today’s rap music. One of my favorite artist, J. Cole said “Feeling sorry for the world cause ain’t no hope for the youth,

...Anaya Ragland April 30, 2012 English Composition II Dr. Janardanan Research Analysis Essay The Influence of Hip Hop on Today’s Youth “After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” This profound statement from English writer, Aldous Huxley, demonstrates the importance that music obtains in today’s society. Simply, music is a form of expression, not limited to any specific genre. Although this expression is not limited to one genre, there is one that seemingly obtains the title of most controversial. The Rap/Hip-Hop genre has been harshly criticized for the topics of discussion in which many songs entail, and the various projected images. Everything has its pros and cons; many people have lost sight of its purpose. Student of Dartmouth College, Rebecca Heller states, "Many people don't realize that hip-hop began by bringing communities and neighborhoods together on the streets of the South Bronx." Hip-Hop is not only a tool of personal expression, but it is also a tool of communal empowerment. Tricia Rose, author of Black Noise, writes that “it is a black cultural expression that prioritizes black voices from the margins of urban America” (2). Hip-Hop is a social movement. It is a way for the African-American community to identify, as the search for identification is a struggle. “Hip hop emerges from a complex cultural exchanges and larger social and political conditions of disillusionment and alienation” (59). In today’s society...

Personal Narrative: Hip Hop Music And Culture

...Hip Hop Music and Culture interested me for a variety of reasons, most of which because I was excited to learn about how I, a white woman, fit in to the hip hop industry and culture. I have always loved hip hop music, and have written several songs for my friends to perform. I’ve always felt guilty about this though, feeling that I was using an art form from a culture that I don’t belong to for my own enjoyment-appropriating it, which is not ok. Since this is only my first quarter at Fairhaven, I wrote some goals before classes began in September. I have a very clear vision of what I want to do when I graduate college which I have had for several years, however I have found that in some of the classes I took in previous years in high school, and at Running Start, that I would try to angle whatever class I was taking at the time to fit the needs of what I would like to be learning. This kept the cap screwed pretty tight on the bottle of things I could have been learning instead, and as a freshman it’s important for me to remember that there are many roads I could take to get to my someday goal, and that by having tunnel vision I miss a lot of really interesting things....

The Brave

...Essay 3 In the book A Song Yet Sung by James McBride, McBride depicts his view of today’s hip hop culture through the dreams of one of his characters; Liz in the story. Throughout the novel, Liz’s visions only portray the negative aspects of the hip hop culture. McBride continued to inform his readers on the bad elements of today’s hip hop culture. These negative attributes are facts the whole world already knows about thanks to mass media. McBride failed to add new information to his claims and acknowledge the whole picture of the hip hop culture. Instead he focused on the violence, wardrobe, and education standards of certain individuals to conclude that “there ain’t no freedom in tomorrow” (McBride). McBride should have pointed out the positive aspects of the culture such as those individuals who participate in community outreach programs, social commentary, and political dialogue. In Liz’s Vision of today’s hip hop culture, she says she saw, “Negroes eating in taverns, thousands of them; huge, fat Negroes, gorging themselves with more food than she ever seen: giant portions of pig, pie, steak, fried potatoes, laughing heartily as they ate, holding their stomachs as they gorged themselves. Negro children with bulging faces, strutting about in undergarments as if they were the finest clothing: undershirts, undershorts, nightshirts, and sleeping caps. Other children sitting in great dining halls before plates piled high with food, desserts, pies, meats, cakes- so...

Adidas Brand in the Hand Case

...analysis 4 SWOT analysis 5 Strategy and Recommendation 5 Marketing strategy – “Supplemented Mobile Marketing” 5 Pros and Cons 7 Financial Calculations/Evaluation and Control 8 Contingency Plan 9 Appendices 11 Executive Summary In late 2004, adidas has launched the Respect M.E. line of sports apparel with hip-hop star Missy Elliot in Europe, and is preparing to introduce it in the United States. The line has been promoted via mobile advertising, online, and with an upcoming face-to-face event in Miami. The focus of the campaign is the mobile effort, which is seen as an inexpensive and yet potentially wide-reaching marketing strategy. This is especially important for adidas, as their advertising budget is only about 2/3rds the size of their greatest competitor in this segment, Nike. The determination about how to proceed with the launch in the U.S. revolves around the benefits and limitations of mobile media, including the technological limitations and social considerations. The suggested strategy for adidas is to maintain its strong mobile presence, supported by online content and tie-ins, but to supplement this approach with a limited infusion of “traditional” advertising. The goal of this hybrid strategy is to advertise via a widespread and tested mainstream medium the existence and benefits of the mobile marketing campaign, thus increasing awareness of the more modern and “hip” promotion. This is especially significant with respect to adidas core target audience, those aged 12-24...

Globalisation

...Globalization Name: Institutional affiliations: This paper focuses on highlighting how the processes of globalization have changed the experiences of growing up and being educated in for the adolescent children aged 12 to 15 in Australia. Globalization is the process by which organizations and businesses establish international relations through the exchange of world business views and ideas, culture and products with other nations of the world. These businesses and organizations then start to operate and trade on an international scale. Globalization can be attributed to advances in the industrial sector, changes in the transportation and telecommunication systems, infrastructural changes, and the rise in the internet culture and development. The interplay of these forces in politics, religion and economies influence the economic trends of each country. Some of the social effects of globalization to the world economy include: poverty reduction due to increase in the wages and employment rate in the participative developing countries, improved healthcare provision due to the registered decline in the maternal and infant mortality rates, the provision of better educational standards, in line with the global millennium developmental goals. However globalization has also been viewed as a key in increasing the unemployment rates in the third world countries due to massive sacking of workers, high poverty rates and low income generation among the working...

Thinking Outside The Idiot Box Analysis

...of love. Lyrics by Hip Hop & R&B artist, The Weeknd from his song The Hills artist that featured his hit song Earned It in this years’ 2015 50 Shades of Grey movie. “ I only call you when it's half past five The only time that I'll be by your side I only love it when you touch me, not feel me When I'm f*cked up, that's the real me” (A-Z lyrics “The Weeknd”). In these words, The Weeknd is basically saying even though we are not in love, it’s lonely and the urge is stronger so we should act on that feeling. No feelings involved or emotions just sex. Secular music can cause you to act, or feel a certain way. Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” In other words, what of those things through music and lyrics through make one feel when in one’s mind is it pleasant? Can the lyrics in a secular song be factual, dignified, right or pure? Whatever a person allows to dwell and reside in one’s mind will sooner or later determine their speech and their actions. In further words, what one puts it, one gets out. “Love is not an experience we generate from within our body - it is that which we open to and invite into our heart and soul” (Paul, Ph.D. Margaret). Love is its on law. Taking everything into account, television has a lot more cons nowadays then pros. Generating real...

Chuck Taylor Past and Future

...With over 100 years in the shoe industry, Converse has been a brand with many different associations. It has marketed and positioned itself in numerous ways and has managed to maintain a high level of brand recognition with all ages and walks of life. It was the World’s first performance basketball sneaker. It was worn by the entire Army Air Corps in WWII. It was the official sponsor of the 1984 Olympics, and it was the shoe that Kurt Cobain was famously wearing when he died. It would be hard to argue that any other brand has been independent enough to be tied to so many market segments. This paper will provide insight into how Converse and the Chuck Taylor All Star was able to maintain its prominent position in the shoe market for over 100 years, despite competition, an ever changing market, and even bankruptcy. History Of Converse In 1908, Converse began as a rubber shoe company specializing in tennis shoes, rubber boots and automobile tires. The All Star shoe was created in 1917 as a specialized basketball shoe. It was competing with A.G. Spalding, U.S. Rubber, and Goodrich. Spalding invented the basketball as we know it today, and the basketball shoe, which included a rubber sole for traction. Previously, athletes competed in a high top shoe with a leather sole. At this time, the sport of basketball was still primitive and lacked the national prominence it has today. In 1921, Converse brought on Charles “Chuck” H. Taylor as a traveling sales representative to...

...Day 1: Had my first day today and it was very interesting. First I had an orientation where we went over general guidelines for interns at Viacom and then we signed some paperwork. Played some icebreaker games and got a crash course in all the entities that Viacom owns such as MTV, MTV2, VH1, Comedy Central, CMT, BET. After I met with JC, one of the research analysts for MTV and I got a tour of where I was working and met fellow employees and met my supervisor Mitchell. I then attended a meeting with the research, programming and creative insight teams where we discussed millennials (people aged 15-30) and their media consumption. We watched clips about certain shows that were going to be aired and whether or not millennials would watch these shows. We also discussed other areas regarding media consumption. Day 2: I arrived early to work to start learning. The more the better in my opinion. I got acclimated at my desk and started learning the basics. I got a crash course in MTV and ratings since I am in intern in the research and strategic insights department. Then I attended a focus group regarding upcoming MTV events and gave input regarding the specific topics. Got acclimated with startrak, the system in which MTV/MTV 2 pulls ratings. Day 3: got acclimated with startrak even more. Learned some of the more difficult tasks associated with it. I learned how to pull the ratings for MTV and checked ratings that my supervisors JC, Cara, and Mitchell create. Basically its just...

VANDERHOFF, M.A.1 ABSTRACT This research study sought to develop, pilot test, and assess a brief male-centered condom promotion program for urban young adult African American males. For study implementation, both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used, and the project was guided by tenets of two common but integrated theoretical frameworks in HIV/sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention research: the social cognitive theory and the stages of change model. The purpose of the qualitative component was to identify and explore condom-use barriers and facilitators while that of the quantitative component was to identify the prevalence of condom-related behaviors and the feasibility of program administration. After recruitment of study participants from hang-out spots and street intercepts, study participants were self-administered a baseline survey regarding their perceived condom-use behaviors prior to random assignment to program conditions (a condom promotion program and an attentionmatched comparison condition). In this paper, we report the findings from the analyses of the quantitative...
