The National Hispanic Heritage recognizes the contributions Hispanic and Latinos have made to the United States. September 15th was chosen as the kick off day because it’s the independence day of five Latin American countries; these countries are Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Columbus Day is also celebrated on October 12th. Hispanic Heritage week was first started in 1968 under president Lyndon Johnson, then president Ronal Regan extended it to one month. National Hispanic Heritage was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 ( National Hispanic Heritage Month). Robert Clemente was a Puerto Rican professional baseball player; he spent eighteen Major League Baseball seasons playing as a right field for Pittsburg Pirates from 1955 to 1972. In 1973 he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and he became the first Latin American and Caribbean players to enshrine. Roberto Clemente was heading to Nicaragua to deliver aid to earthquake victim when the plane he was in crash into the Atlantic Ocean, his body was never found.
