...Kayla Tovar 052701 My Scholarship Essay What is a scholar? A scholar is a person who can achieve goals and overcome obstacles. The question is, are you a scholar? An example of a scholar is me, because I am a scholar. With my family I could say it’s a typical Hispanic family. First there are my parents, whom my mom works at Wal-Mart and dad works at the Maverick County Detention Center. Then I have my siblings, I have two brothers and one sister. My sister she is the oldest, she recently just graduated from Our Lady of Lake and is currently working at C.C Winn High School as a Algebra I teacher. Next I have my oldest brother who once he graduated from high school he went straight into the army. Last but last not least I have my other brother who is currently in UTSA. Being the youngest of four, my parents have the expectancy of making sure I make the right choices. They at times may pressure me about which footsteps I’m going to follow. All my older siblings made good decisions but for me at times it’s hard to choose whom to follow. I have a sister who focused mostly on school; I have a brother who went straight into the army and then my last older brother who had fun and still did well in school. Growing up I have taught myself to make sure I appreciate what I have been given. When I was in elementary almost every summer I would volunteer at Paint the Town to help my community. I have also participated with the band with volunteer work. Every since my freshman...

...In ground and bottom, it does not matter if someone is white or black, American or Hispanic, we are all the same. Is it right to judge people by the color of their skin? Is treating people equally regardless of race somehow a paragon of inequality? Unfortunately, in today’s society we are judging people by the color of their skin, and not from their country of origin, ethnicity or biological. The American dream is based on the idea that; America where no matter who you are, no matter what you look like, no matter where you come from, no matter what your last name is, no matter who you love, you can make it here if you try. While the United States was built on this idea, it is becoming harder and harder for people to move up in social status...

...Nayeli Elizabeth Zamarripa Scholarship Essay My goal is to attend Santa Barbara City College in the fall and study Administration of Justice with a Criminology Emphasis. After two years, I plan on receiving my A.A Degree in Administration of Justice and transferring to a four year university to receive my bachelors degree. I am interested in this field because I have always enjoyed forensics and watching different shows on Investigation Discovery. I am drawn to forensic science because it allows professionals to track criminals and hold them responsible for their crimes. I have participated in mock trial for the last two years and I enjoy learning about the criminal justice system. In my senior thesis class, I wrote a twenty page paper and did extensive research on Forensic Science. While working on this project I found it interesting how crime lab professionals can put all the pieces of evidence together to catch and convict criminals. For instance, I learned that patterns of blood spatters and the shapes of blood drops tell exactly how a crime was committed. During this time, I interviewed Lieutenant Phil West and he gave me some great information about his job. The idea of putting a puzzle together is extremely thrilling to me. He also told me that he would try his best to make some arrangements so I could watch an autopsy. This report took a lot of hard work but it also gave me an opportunity to realize that this is what I want to study and learn more about...

...“At odds”, a phrase which means in conflict or at variance. People may feel at odds with different situations or even with each others, consequently they eliminate the feeling in varies ways. However, when there comes to feel at odds with a new culture for these two writers, both of them tried to assimilate into the American culture which they immigrated to and longed for getting involved with, by overcoming the inability of fitting in the society while struggling with their own particular difficulties, emphasizing that sometimes you have to do something against your original heritage in order to achieve the assimilation. The author, David Jacobson, of the essay “Reflections: Growing-Up Grown” expresses how grateful he was for his non-English...

...UIL Latino History Essay Una mujer de muchos logros What is History? What events are defined as history? Changing the world or even a community with just the tiniest of events is how history is created. Christy Martinez-Garcia is making history in Lubbock, Texas. Born and raised in Lubbock, Christy has long since been discourage for her race, yet none of these things have stopped her from achieving her goals. “Discouragement is my encouragement, tell me I can’t and I’m going to show you I can do it,” Christy stated when asked about herself and the hurdles of being an educated Latina. Christy has become a leader, activist, and an inspiration to an innumerable amount of individuals because of her endless aspirations to change the world. “Be fearless and have faith,” a quote Christy uses to conquer life endless impediments. Latino’s are often stereotyped as drug dealers, criminals, and gangbangers. None of these statements represent every single Latino. Christy is proof of this statement, she has proven every one of these stereotypes to be inaccurate. She has been the founder of various types of organizations, created a newspaper from the Latino perspective, and worked in grassroots communication in Washington, D.C. She is a woman of many accomplishments and has no intention of stopping. Latino Lubbock is one of Christy’s first biggest...

...The first concept that stood out for me is the one from Karl Marx and his idea of social conflict, the struggle between the haves and have nots. The passage that I saw this concept in is the passage about Father Regis O’Connell. Father O’Connell explains that he’s worried about his Hispanic parishioners. Many of them work at the packing plant and are undocumented immigrants. They are treated unfairly, work under horrible conditions and it seems as if management knows they are undocumented and use that against the workers. The management and owners would be what Karl Marx describes as the capitalists and the workers are the proletarians. The workers are not yet at the point where they band together and accomplish a change, they are still under the thumbs of the capitalists. I think that the small town I grew up in could be compared to this situation. It doesn’t fit exactly, however, there were a small number of people in charge and they ruled over the town, not allowing any changes they didn’t approve of first, to the point where they hindered progress. The second concept I noticed was social stratification, in the History and Demographics paragraphs, specifically, the description of Lake Elmo and the people who live around there. It perfectly describes how the upper class -- the upper-uppers-- lives in the richest subdivision near Lake Elmo, and the lower-uppers live in Apple Hill. The middle class, the upper-middles and average middles, live in the main part of town...
