HW #1 “Response to Pgs. 68-157” After reading chapters 4 through 7 of ‘American Colonies’ by Alan Taylor there were two distinct topics that caught my eye during my readings. These two topics were the Pueblo Revolt, which took place between the natives and the Hispanics, and also the establishment of Jamestown by the English. The Pueblo Revolt occurred in 1680 and was the result from decades of mistreatment of the Pueblos by the Spaniards. The Pueblos complete way of living had been controlled and dominated by the Spaniards for a tiresome span of over eight decades. The Spaniards were in control of the Pueblos mainly because they had installed so much fear into them that the Pueblos were afraid to retaliate. “They provided a military reserve needed to intimidate the Indians…”(Taylor 86). But they eventually had enough years of torment that they decided to just come together as one and take over by causing the Spaniards to flee and also killing off some of them as well. The second topic that stood out to me was the establishment of Jamestown by the English colonist. After the new King James I succeeded Queen Elizabeth in 1603 and after a peace treaty with Spain was signed in 1604, “the great merchants and lawyers of London took a new interest in colonizing Virginia” (Taylor 130). King James granted a group of London investors a charter to go ahead and colonize and govern Virginia. They set out for Virginia from England in three vessels and decided to take the standard circle route southwest, “via the trade winds to the Canaries, westward to the West Indies, and then north with the Gulf Stream to Virginia. They arrived to Chesapeake Bay on April 26,1607 and established the new settlement of Jamestown about sixty miles down the James River by a marsh on the north bank. They decided to call the river James and the settlement Jamestown so that they could

They were seen as nothing but a person that should stay home with the children, tend to the land and their husbands. As the world began to change, so did the view point and the rights of women. This change did not happen overnight and it was not an easy battle. The women of our past paved the road so that the women today can play a major role in the military, politics and on the home front of America. The first battle for women’s rights came in the mid to late 1800’s, prior to the Civil War at the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848. The movement came to a sudden halt, just as it started to begin, due to the Civil War. In 1869 the proposed 15th Amendment, which gave black men the right to vote, fueled the women’s right movement even more (Bowles 2011). Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton played a major role in the early part of this movement. In May 1869, the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) was formed by Susan B. Carter Hist:204 Instructor Ronnie Peacock April 8, 2013 The African American’s struggles have been many as well as continuous throughout the centuries. However, this race despite the trials and tribulations thrown at them, stood fast when faced with adversity, discrimination, oppression and segregation. They are a people once condemned by the country that stole their heritage and identity, forced them into slavery and labeled then subhuman. After imprisonments, the loss of lives, much sacrifice and an undeniable refusal of contentment, they are now America’s doctors, lawyers, priests, educators, judges and Secretary of State. From slavery to the White House, the African American took control over its fate and today continues to orchestrate its own destiny. After many years of involuntary servitude, beating, rapes and hangings, the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified on December 6, 1865, stating, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.", the African American slave finally had a taste of freedom, so he thought. Even though the Thirteenth amendment was the Constitutional end of slavery in the United States, this was not the end of slavery.
