Historical Inaccuracies in the Films

What reasons do your authors give to explain the historical inaccuracies in the films? It’s hard to sometime to see the truth for what it is. When I was growing up my grandma used to say, “There’s HER STORY, HIS STORY AND THE TRUTH!” Inaccuracies in history are usually originated from story tellers (move producers or writers) placing their personal view to a story. In the story Black Robe, the authors wrote the movie from the journal of the missionary Father Jesuit Laforque. To keep the adventurous feel of the film there were a couple of inaccuracies. According to Carnes, M., & Garraty, J. (2008). Father Laforque wrote down a conversation between himself and Chief Algonquin. Later on Father Laforque took this documented conversation to a second European whom was not present and asked him to read the document aloud; Europeans by contrast were illiterate during this timeframe (Carnes & Garraty, p. 46, 2008).

In the mystery/suspense film, “The Crucible”, another example of an inaccuracy was Indians tribes journeying 1500 miles in the midst of winter only to set up camps to habituate until spring. The “Dilate” according to Carnes, M., & Garraty, J. (2008) was to keep the audience interested in the story line by focusing in on the girls behavior (Carnes & Garraty, p. 76, 2008).

.

In the “Patriot” Benjamin Martin wasn’t a real person, but in leaders such as Francis Marion similarity can be found, which could also provide some inaccuracies. Historians criticized much of what was told about the South for example the British cavalry wore red uniforms, but they were called “Green Dragons” (Carnes & Garraty, p. 138, 2008). .

In the story “The Alamo”, the author talks about the 1960 movie that John Wayne directed. There was no such evidence of him stealing cattle or romancing women. There were inaccuracies with the Santa Ana’s character having big cannon.

In Cold Mountain a lot of the story is based on Frazier imagination. Inman was based on Frazier’s great-great-grandfather; the real Inman was killed near Cold Mountain in a gunfight.

In your view, do the historical inaccuracies harm or help our understanding of past events and historical figures? My opinion, historical inaccuracies can harm as well as help with the story lines of a movie. It helps when a historical figure is portrayed as bigger patriot or champion, than he/she actually was in real lives, which in turn to gives hope to the audience throughout the course of the story being told or the moving being watched.

Historical inaccuracies can also spawn more questions about the story being told; “The Alamo 1960” A question that I am pressed with is what was the reason the character Bowie wanted to abandon the Alamo? Historical Facts show that he and Travis wanted to stay and hold the Alamo (Carnes & Garraty, p. 316, 2008).

. The 2004 film stays a little closer to the facts. In Black Robe, the question for me would be “were the Indians that trustworthy to the Jesuits than what the story portrays. The Crucible would leave me with more concerns and questions as to why a man of John’s age would be with a girl of Abigail’s age and would he be the cause of her losing her mind.
In your view, do the historical inaccuracies harm or help our understanding or the present (people or groups)? That is to say, do directors use historical events and people to make a point about America and Americans today? Explain. Yes, the accuracies in the story “Cold Mountain” resemble the present life of military families. The left alone spouse, that is home managing home affairs, and raising the children wishing for the spouse to come home to the breaking point of begging, is a normal event in today’s society, and one that hits home right here in Fort Hood, Texas. America still has a hard time with religion of other groups. Some historical figures and events are not so pretty, and a director plays on your listening senses and your sight to keep the audience in tune to the story line. For example, in The Patriot the battle of Cowpens they added fireworks even though neither side was capable of that type of artillery in that period of time.

Reviewing the Past the Patriot

...A. What elements in the film are historically accurate and which are inaccurate? Give examples from the article to illustrate.  Some elements of the film were accurate such as guerilla war fare on both sides such as the British slaughtering villages and the Americans killing officers first in the battle. There are also inaccuracies that historians have found such as the character Benjamin Martin and the battle of Cowpens which Cornwallis was not present. Many historians criticized the movie for these inaccuracies to the point where it was even compared the Godzilla to biology. B. In your view, do the historical inaccuracies harm or help our understanding of past events and historical figures? Explain I think in this particular movie it does harm the understanding because the revolutionary war was the birth of our nation, and for the movie to have incorrect information takes away the realization of the war. We as Americans are proud of our for fathers fight for our nations freedom, so for someone who loves history might have a problem with the movie, but if you don’t really want to take the time to research movies like this are good to get the jest of history. C. In your view, do the historical inaccuracies harm or help our understanding of the present (people or groups)? That is to say, is the director using historical events and people to make a point about America and Americans today? Explain. For this particular movie I think the director did a good job as representing...

Patriot Movie Review

...perspective of an implacable family. While the movie provided entertainment, there were many historical events that were illustrated in this film such as, the depiction of militias, the implications of battles, and insight to life during war. Due to the bias nature of the film and a few historical inaccuracies, the nationalism in this movie becomes overwhelming. This film was set in the 1770’s in early South Carolina. Benjamin Martian, an ex French and Indian war icon, is the father of seven children who rejected a proposal to go to battle and be apart of the Continental Army. While trying to avoid any involvement in the battle, the war comes close to home and the leading antagonist Colonel Tavington killed Thomas, his 15-year-old son. Martin began seeking revenge by creating a militia that consisted of peasants and farmers. The militia had an objective to keep General Cornwallis in South Carolina. Their efforts were successful through their strategic planning by killing off his men and cutting him off from supplies. Although they succeeded in the surrender of Cornwallis, Gabriel, Martins son, also became a victim of Tavington and was killed. Gabriel’s death evoked one last fight between Martin and Tavington. Martin had the victory over him, which lead to Tavington’s death and helped drive the Continental Army to achieve victory over the British. The portrayal of the militias in this film consisted mostly of farmers and low class people taking the initiative to protect their families...

Lincoln Review

...Larry England Dr. Vinzant Steven Spielberg’s film Lincoln accurately depicted the sixteenth president as portrayed by Daniel Day Lewis in his Oscar winning performance. Some critics say that no other film has ever captured the sixteenth president as clearly as Lincoln. However, there were a few major mistakes made in the movie. One of the biggest inaccuracies in the movie was that two Connecticut congressman voted against the thirteenth amendment. However, all four Connecticut congressmen actually supported the thirteenth amendment. It is also said that the last five minutes of the movie were probably the most historically inaccurate of the whole film. The film showed Lincoln lying in bed in a nightgown. In reality he was laid in bed nude while the doctors looked over his body and then he was covered with a blanket. He also would have been laid diagonally across the bed because a 6’ 4” man was too tall to lay in the bed the regular lengthwise direction. Another of the other major inaccuracies was that Lincoln’s image was on currency. History shows us that the Union did not print his image on any currency until after he had died. Lincoln’s face appeared on the hundred dollar bill in 1869. Some of the other historical inaccuracies centered on Mary Todd-Lincoln. The film shows that she attended meetings of the U.S. House of Representatives. It would have been very unusual for the First Lady to watch any of the house proceedings. Mrs...

While there are some historical inaccuracies as well as fictional situations in the movie, it is still useful for providing an important historical summary of Columbus’ voyage in a dramatic manner that draws in viewers. In the film, Columbus believes that sailing west will provide a new route to the “earthly paradise of China” (1492: Conquest of Paradise). His request for funding is denied by the Spanish council, but after a rich investor agrees to help him, Queen Isabella I approves the trip. World Civilization

...Historical Accuracies and Inaccuracies of Saving Private Ryan By Foday Bangura World Civilization Mrs. Beavers 2 April 2015 World War II is probably considered one of the most violent and horrific wars in modern history. There have been many reenactments of this historical moment in Hollywood. One movie that portrayed events significantly during World War II is Saving Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg. Even though Saving Private Ryan is critically acclaimed for its realistic battle scenes and won multiple academy awards for its cinematic display and accuracy of events, there are still many inaccuracies throughout the movie as well. This film can be considered one of the greatest war movies of all time, but even some of the greatest reenactments can be inaccurate at times relating to history. The movie is about a group of troops on a mission to find another soldier in the name of Ryan so they can bring him back home to his mother. The reason they had to bring him back is because he had three older brothers already in war, but unfortunately were killed during battle. This resulted in the effort to try to find Ryan to bring him back home to his mother because he was the youngest, and to avoid all brothers being killed. During this journey to retrieve Ryan many troops were killed along the way, but at the end the troops finally found Ryan and brought him back home. During the journey, the movie reenacts historical moments such D-day. For example, the beginning...

The Patriot Movie Analysis

...This battle took place in South Carolina on August 16th, 1780. This battle in the movie is from the perspective of Gabrielle, Benjamin's son. Just before the scene, Gabrielle speaks of how he wishes to join the war again after being injured. There are factual inaccuracies and accuracies of this scene. But overall, I did find this scene to be accurate. The result in the movie is that the British simply trounced the continental army in this battle. The Americans were defeated easily in this scene. Horatio Gates, the Continental Army General during the battle, was forced to retreat. This was depicted clearly in the movie. A primary source explains the defeat that took place that day: a letter from Francis Marion to Peter Horry on August 27th, 1780. The letter...

Amistad Reflection

...The movie Amistad was an incredible and powerful work of film. The historical events the film depicted were not a story I was familiar with, and although the movie was at times violent and even brutal, I believe it truthfully portrayed an adaptation of what actually happened and what captured Africans were subjected to against their will. For me, one of the most significant parts of this film in the present day was the number of extremely well-known actors and who took part in the production of the piece directed by none other than Stephen Spielberg. Historical non-fiction is not a common topic in the movie industry, especially not those that expose events that depict America in a less-than-perfect light. I thought it was greatly significant that so many celebrities would assemble to create this film that could stir up controversy in its portrayal of actual events, revealing the dehumanizing treatment of Africans during the time of the Slave Trade. Amistad is a film that undeniably makes an impact on whoever watches it, and I found it impressive that so many public figures would come together to work and make that statement unashamedly, not to mention the movie’s favorable box office results. The events of history the film reveals are brought to attention in the contemporary world, and even with its few inaccuracies, the movie educates its viewers, bringing history into the present day in a medium to which the public can easily relate. I find this important because often it seems...

The Mummy Historical Movie Review

...effects too. Overall, I found the movie very entertaining and enjoyable and I loved almost every minute of it. Although the movie was very entertaining, l did find some historical inaccuracies in it. I believe the movie could have been made much better if some of these inaccuracies were fixed. This review will deal with historical inaccuracies that focus on the characters of the movie, the values and beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians, the geographical locations and architectures shown in the movie. The Mummy tells the story about a priest named Imhotep, who had an affair with the Pharaoh’s mistress and killed the Pharaoh, and as punishment for his deeds he was mummified alive and cursed for all eternity in Hamunaptra, the city of the dead. Thousands of years pass, and in the 1920’s a soldier of the French Foreign Legion named Rick O’Connell meets a librarian and aspiring Egyptologist named Evelyn, and joins her and her brother on a quest to find Hamunaptra, a lost Ancient Egyptian city which is said to have numerous amounts of hidden treasure. Instead of finding treasure though, they accidently reawaken the mummy of Imhotep, who if brought back to life, will “arise a walking disease”, unleash the ten plagues of Egypt, become invincible, and cause mass destruction. First, I will highlight the historical inaccuracies of the characters shown in this movie. The main villain in The Mummy is Imhotep. In the beginning of the movie, Imhotep is shown to be the High Priest under the rule...

The Comparison of the Two Movies of Jose Rizal

...Montano. Directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya, this is GMA Films’ entry to the 1998 Metro Manila Film Festival. It is considered as one of the biggest budgeted films in the Philippine movie history with a record of P80-million. This film was dubbed as the most spectacular and “controversial” Philippine film epic because of its record-breaking 80-million budget. The film won several prestigious awards and has also premiered at several well-known film festivals around the world including the Berlin International Film Festival in 1998 and has also won as the 2nd runner-up in the Audience Award of the Toronto Filmfest. The problem with Jose Rizal if that it concentrates on historical accuracy rather than artistic contribution. The film, as mentioned, is basically a history book adapted to film. My problem with this Rizal film is that the depth of this film’s Rizal is as much as the depth of Rizal you’d get from a high schooler’s Filipino textbook. However, there arealso negative comments that I must say about the movie. The plot was full of twists and turns. It is confusing to watch because of too many flashbacks and you couldn’t guess whether it is still in flashback or not. Also, some scenes are brutal, and some are not suitable for young kids such as the bed scene wherein the Spanish priest with the use of his power tried to rape a Filipino woman. Compare that to Tikoy Aguiluz’s Rizal sa Dapitan, which has its own historical inaccuracies, but the Rizals there are definitely deeper, probably...

...fight we see many people arise in trying to make this country a greater place. People like Jackie Robinson also helped make an impacted in achieving equality. Robinson didn’t use speeches and politic realms to do this but he used baseball, an American pastime, to bring together our country. The film 42 is a depiction of how one baseball player took strides to not only unite a team but an entire country. In the film Remember the Titans a group of high school boys both white and black are forced to come together to be the best team they can be. This film shows how overcoming adversity can be accomplished by anyone who believes in the cause enough. Over the past century African Americans have made great strides in overcoming racial adversity, and gaining most of the same freedoms of white Americans. These films both address and attract viewer support for the equality of African Americans. However, the film 42 does a better job at attracting viewer support because of the historical accuracy, the larger audience it appeals to and its’ stronger historical significance. The film 42 is about Jackie Robison’s journey in the major league while fighting racial inequality using baseball. The film begins Robison’s baseball career with an offer from the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers to join their farm team the Montreal Royals. After a season with the Royal’s Jackie proves himself to the owner and he offers Robison a spot on the Dodgers roster. Being accepted to Brooklyn Dodges...

Historical Inaccuracies In The Movie

...There is no doubt that Zack Snyder is very capable of making a wonderful film, with all of the actions and the graphics that he gave us within the hit movie 300, released in 2007. As much of a hit as the movie was, it was also riddled with historical inaccuracies. Three of such that were rather large towards the end of the movie were that only the three hundred Spartans stayed to battle, when the death of Leonidas actually took place, and when Epialtes and the men that he’d lead to the back of the Spartan army showed up. There were also a few parts that Herodotus never mentions that must have been added to make the storyline flow easier, of course, though viewers see that in every Hollywood movie. As stated above, there are many inaccuracies within the movie. One of which was the fact that there...
