zHISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF MANAGEMENT

Major objective of treating “Management Theory and Practice” in a concise, interesting, and understandable manner will be to present management history and theory with an emphasis on the future. Most students will be applying the concepts learned here over a period of next many years. Another objective shall be to identify several areas where management concepts are applicable to the personal and professional goal-setting and also to apply the management skills to the challenge of managing the most difficult peer or subordinate – the one that may confront you in the mirror each morning in your professional career.

In any treatment of a basic subject like this, there is little that the resource/anchor person can claim to be uniquely his own except his/her tacit knowledge and the presentation style. The write-ups from chapters of recommended text books for this course has also been included and are highly acknowledged.

The Intellectual Heritage of Management:

Organized endeavors directed by people responsible for planning, organizing, leading, and controlling activities have existed for thousands of years. The Egyptian pyramids and the Great Wall of China, for instance, are tangible evidence that projects of tremendous scope, employing tens of thousands of people, were undertaken well before modern times. The pyramids are a particularly interesting example. The construction of a single pyramid occupied more than 100,000 workers for 20 years. Who told each worker what to do? Who ensured that there would be enough stones at the site to keep workers busy? The answer to such questions is managers. Regardless of what managers were called at the time, someone had to plan what was to be done, organize people and materials to do it, lead and direct the workers, and impose some controls to ensure that everything was done

Strategic Asset Allocation: Determining the Optimal Portfolio with Ten Asset Classes

...Strategic Asset Allocation: Determining the Optimal Portfolio with Ten Asset Classes Niels Bekkers Mars The Netherlands Ronald Q. Doeswijk* Robeco The Netherlands Trevin W. Lam Rabobank The Netherlands October 2009 Abstract This study explores which asset classes add value to a traditional portfolio of stocks, bonds and cash. Next, we determine the optimal weights of all asset classes in the optimal portfolio. This study adds to the literature by distinguishing ten different investment categories simultaneously in a mean-variance analysis as well as a market portfolio approach. We also demonstrate how to combine these two methods. Our results suggest that real estate, commodities and high yield add most value to the traditional asset mix. A study with such a broad coverage of asset classes has not been conducted before, not in the context of determining capital market expectations and performing a mean-variance analysis, neither in assessing the global market portfolio. Valuation

...Overview The first section of this report is an overview of the base-case assumptions used to generate the pro-forma statement for the Body Shop’s forecast from year 2002 to 2004, followed with the amount of additional financing required by the Body Shop during this timeframe. The results of the sensitivity analysis is discussed the third section. Finally, the report is concluded with a list of recommendations that the Body Shop’s financial managers and general managers could look into. Base-Case Assumptions The percentage-of-sales forecasting is employed to generate the pro-forma financial statement. This method involves forecasting the future turnover. Once this is done, the estimated turnover is then used to compute other accounts in the income statement and balance sheet based on its linkage to the turnover. However, this approach might not be applicable to all accounts. Hence, the base-case assumptions beneath will provide justification to this shortcoming. Turnover The turnover rates were increasing from 1999 to 2001 despite the Body Shop suffered some huge losses from its business in 1999 and 2001. The losses, basically, are due to the intense competition Body Shop faces from the new entrants. However, based on the upward trend shown in the historical data and also taking the compounding effect into consideration, we would assume a slight increment in the Body Shop’s turnover growth rate. Also, it is expected to increase by 0.5% in year 2002 at 13.8% of sales, 14.3%...

Riordan Manufacturing Business System Proposal

...Manufacturing Business System Proposal Paul Belanger, Aaron Ledger, Dacia Faulk, Ian Westerfield, Jennifer Gallaway University of Phoenix Introduction Being the industry leader in polymer materials and per our mission statement, Riordan Manufacturing must remain in step with industry trends. In order to effectively attain this objective, we must acclimatize, embrace, and take advantage of new and innovative technologies. In addition to identifying existing systems employed within the company that are in need of upgrades, the remainder of this paper will also address new systems as well as sub-systems needed and present a brief summary of why these systems would be advantageous to the future of Riordan Manufacturing. Finance and Accounting Overview Riordan manufacturing employs nine basic finance and accounting subsystems globally and three additional subsystems at the San Jose, California corporate headquarters. The atmosphere of interoperability between each of Riordan’s offices (California, Georgia, Michigan, and China) is at best hostile. At present, each operating entity has its own finance and accounting system resulting in a number of inefficiencies due to company-wide systems incompatibility, a lot of which stems from the Michigan and Georgia acquisition. To better establish potential interoperability between existing subsystems, it is first necessary to define the current subsystems of each Riordan office, existing software solutions, and how these resources fit within...

Earning Management Study-Oil and Gas Industry

...Earnings Management Study Oil & Gas Industry Abstract This study mainly focused on the earnings management in oil and gas industry and we used Jones model to detect discretionary accruals in the subject companies. Specifically, we examined three oil and gas sample companies that have been required to restate their financial reports due to the oil reserve overestimation. After running the regression and comparing statistics with other oil and gas companies, we found that the sample companies do revise oil reserves to manipulate the DDA expenses, thus achieving their goals of earnings management. Some recommended auditing guidance to detect such manipulation were given at the end. Introduction/Assumption Earnings management, in accounting, is the act of intentionally influencing the process of financial reporting to obtain some private gain. Earnings management involves the manipulation of company earnings towards a pre-determined target. This target can be motivated by a preference for more stable earnings, in which case management is said to be carrying out income smoothing. Management may also overstate the income for personal interests. Other possible motivations for earnings management include the need to maintain the levels of certain accounting ratios due to debt covenants, boost earnings to beat analyst targets, or intentionally understate the earnings to get rid of the...
