On November 18, 1978, Jim Jones, leader of the Peoples Temple cult, ordered all his followers living in his Jonestown compound to drink poisoned grape-flavored punch in order to commit mass suicide. On that day, 912 people (including 276 children) died in what has become known as the Jonestown Massacre. How could one person convince over 900 others to commit suicide? Well, Jim Jones had been planning to carry out this "revolutionary act" of mass suicide for quite some time. To ensure full compliance, Jones had staged practice runs, called "White Nights," in which he would order everyone to drink what he told them was poisoned punch. After everyone had stood around for about 45 minutes or so, he would then tell them that this had been a loyalty test.

The Dots in Pac-Man When the Pac-Man video game was released in 1980, it quickly became an international sensation. As kids and adults alike moved the pie-shaped Pac-Man character around the screen, they tried to eat up lots of dots without themselves getting eaten by ghosts. But how many dots were they trying to eat? It turns out that each level of Pac-Man had the exact same number of dots -- 240.

Lincoln Logs Created by Frank Lloyd Wright's Son Lincoln Logs is a classic children's toy that has been played by millions of children for decades. The toy usually comes in a box or cylinder and includes both brown "logs" and green slats for roofs, which children use to build their own frontier house or fort. Despite playing with Lincoln Logs for hours and hours as a child, you might not know that they were created by John Lloyd Wright, the son of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and were first sold by Red Square Toy Company in 1918. It would be easy to assume that Wright got the idea for Lincoln Logs by visiting an old log cabin, but that is not the case. Wright was in Japan helping his father build the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo when the idea for interlocking pieces struck him. It would also be easy to assume that the name "Lincoln Logs" refers to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln's log cabin, but that too is not the case. The name "Lincoln" actually refers to the discarded original middle name of John's father, Frank Lloyd Wright (he was born Frank Lincoln Wright).

"Lenin" Was a Pseudonym Russian revolutionary Vladimir Ilich Lenin, also commonly called V.I. Lenin or just plain Lenin, was actually not born with that name. Lenin was born as Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov and didn't begin using the pseudonym of Lenin until the age of 31.

Up until that age, Lenin, still known as Ulyanov, had used his birth name for both his legal and illegal activities. However, having just returned from a three-year exile in Siberia, Ulyanov found it useful to begin writing under a different name in 1901 in order to continue his revolutionary work.

Brad Pitt and the Iceman What do Brad Pitt and the Iceman have in common? Tattoos. Although the 5,300-year-old mummified remains of the Iceman, known as Otzi, was found with over 50 tattoos on his body, most of them were simple lines. Brad Pitt on the other hand had an outline of the Iceman's body tattooed onto his left forearm in 2007.

Juan Peron's Hands While serving his third, non-consecutive term as President of Argentina, Juan Peron died on July 1, 1974 at age 78. His rule had been controversial, with many adoring him and others reviling him. After his death, his body was injected with formaldehyde and interred at La Chacarita Cemetery in Buenos Aires. In 1987, grave robbers opened up Peron's coffin, cut off his hands and stole them, along with his sword and cap. The robbers then sent a ransom letter asking for $8 million to return the hands. Once the desecration was discovered, Peron's body was sealed behind a bulletproof plate and 12 heavy-duty locks. On October 17, 2006, Peron's body was moved to a mausoleum at Peron's country home in San Vicente, just outside of Buenes Aires. The grave robbers have never been found.

Catch-18 Joseph Heller's famous novel, Catch-22, was first published in 1961. Set in World War II, the book is a comic satirical novel about bureaucracy. The phrase "Catch 22" in the novel is used to denote the vicious circle of military bureaucracy. The term "Catch 22" has made it into mainstream usage to mean any two choices that are mutually dependent (for example, which came first: the chicken or the egg?). However, the term we now know as "Catch 22" was almost "Catch 18" for Heller had originally chosen Catch-18 as the title of the book. Unfortunately for Heller, Leon Uris published his Mila 18 novel just before Heller's book was to be published. Heller's publisher didn't think it would be good to have two books out at the same time with "18" in the title. Attempting to come up with another name, Heller and his publisher considered Catch-11, Catch-17, and Catch-14 before deciding on the title we all know, Catch-22.

Insulin Discovered in 1922 Medical researcher Frederick Banting and research assistant Charles Best studied the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas of dogs at the University of Toronto. Banting believed that he could find a cure for the "sugar disease" (diabetes) in the pancreas. In 1921, they isolated insulin and successfully tested in on diabetic dogs, lowering the dogs' blood sugar level. Researcher John Macleod and chemist James Collip then began to help prepare insulin for human use. On January 11, 1922, Leonard Thompson, a 14-year-old boy who was dying of diabetes, was given the first human experimental dose of insulin. The insulin saved his life. In 1923, Banting and Macleod were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work on discovering insulin. What was once a death sentence, people now diagnosed with diabetes can live long lives thanks to the work of these men.

Why Is Roosevelt on the Dime? In 1921, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken with a bout of polio that left him partially paralyzed, there were no organizations to lend support. Although Roosevelt had the money for the very best treatments for himself, he realized that there were thousands of others who did not. Also, at the time, there was no known cure for polio. In 1938, President Roosevelt helped establish the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (which later became known as the March of Dimes). This foundation was created to help care for polio patients and to help fund research to find a cure. Funding from the March of Dimes helped Jonas Salk discover a vaccine for polio. Soon after President Franklin D. Roosevelt's death in 1945, the public started sending letters to the United States Treasury Department requesting that Roosevelt's portrait be placed on a coin. The dime seemed the most appropriate coin because of Roosevelt's ties to the March of Dimes. The new dime was released to the public on Roosevelt's birthday, January 30, 1946.

The Nickname "Tin Lizzie" Priced so that the average American could afford it, Henry Ford sold his Model T from 1908 until 1927. Many also may know the Model T by its nickname, the "Tin Lizzie." But how did the Model T get its nickname? In the early 1900s, car dealers would try to create publicity for their new automobiles by hosting car races. In 1922, a championship race was held in Pikes Peak, Colorado. Entered as one of the contestants was Noel Bullock and his Model T, named "Old Liz." Since Old Liz looked the worse for wear (it was unpainted and lacked a hood), many spectators compared Old Liz to a tin can. By the start of the race, the car had the new nickame of "Tin Lizzie." To everyone's surprise, Tin Lizzie won the race. Having beaten even the most expensive other cars available at the time, Tin Lizzie proved both the durability and speed of the Model T. The surprise win of Tin Lizzie was reported in newspapers across the country, leading to the use of the nickname "Tin Lizzie" for all Model T cars.

Hoover Flags When the U.S. stock market crashed in 1929, President Herbert Hoover attempted to stop the U.S. economy from spiraling into what has become known as the Great Depression. Although President Hoover took action, most people agree that it just wasn't enough. Upset at Hoover, people began to give items that represented the economic crisis negative nicknames. For instance, shanty towns became known as "Hoovervilles." "Hoover blankets" were newspapers that homeless people used to protect themselves from the cold. "Hoover flags" were pants pockets that had been turned inside out, symbolizing a lack of money. "Hoover wagons" were old cars pulled by horses since their owners could no longer pay for gas.

Augustine as Mentor

...Book Review Augustine as Mentor: A Model for Preparing Spiritual Leaders Liberty University CHHI520- Church History Robert Olsen Edward L. Smither's book entitled Augustine as Mentor: A Model for Preparing Spiritual Leader's was a very eye-opening and very interesting read. The book itself is not just about Augustine himself as a mentor, but it's really somewhat of a user guide on some of the finer points that any leader/mentor (especially in Ministry) can use on their journey in Ministry; it's written almost like a "how to" manual. As far as how the book is written, there's ground work on mentoring in general that's laid and it mixes in some "insights" on Augustine that will be further mentioned as the book progresses. As a matter of fact, it's not until the third chapter where the story really begins on the background and history of Augustine's life and ministry. Through the first chapter, Mr. Smither really goes over the eight main characteristics of mentoring that many spiritual leaders in years past have used (Smither, 13). Those eight are the group, the mentor as disciple, selection, the mentor-disciple relationship, sound teaching, modeling and involving in ministry, releasing to ministry and resourcing leaders. From there they look at several different people who used a very similar style from those who are more "known" (such as Paul and Jesus), to those who aren't like Bishop Basil and the clergy that had he...

Micro Enhancement Case Summary

...App. 2002) Facts of the Case: Micro Enhancement International (MEI) was a software development company that was on the about to have an IPO. They hired Coopers and Lybrand as the auditor. The IPO for MEI was delayed because Coopers and Lybrand were resisting some of MEI’s recognized revenue and were threating to add a “going concern” to the audit. In the end Coopers and Lybrand allowed MEI to recognize the revenue and took away the “going concern” qualification. By the time the issue was settled MEI had lost the underwriter for the IPO and then went bankrupt shortly after. MEI sued Coopers and Lybrand for multiple things, but then wanted to add a breach of fiduciary duty. MEI’s CEO Staples said that, “he trusted Coopers and that Coopers had agreed to do the audit to do the Audit and to serve as MEI’s business advisor…” The judge denied this request and MEI appealed. Procedural History: The judge denied MEI’s request to add the breach of fiduciary duty so MEI appealed. Legal Issue: The issue in this case is the establishment of Cooper and Lybrand’s fiduciary duty to MEI. If this duty is established then MEI will get to add that breach, however, if not, the judge’s original ruling will be affirmed. Reasoning/Analysis: The first thing is to understand what causes a fiduciary duty. There are two types, Matter of Law (between a attorney and client, physicians and patients, partners and partnerships, and close friends/relatives) or a Matter of Fact, which means that...

Legal Advice Letter

...Smith, Thank you for your phone call last week requesting a legal advice. In this letter, I will provide you with my legal opinion concerning the facts you gave to me so you can make a qualified decision regarding the charges you face. First I will restate the facts, as I know them, to confirm their accuracy. Next, I will give you my opinion on whether a conviction for insider dealing is a potentiality. In your phone call you said, that you have received a call from City of London Police who wanted you to come in for an interview under caution due to evidence stating that you have been insider dealing. Regarding the facts of the case you explain, that you work for Stevens Management buying and selling orders and your wife works in the financial department in Transeit, a company which has been taken over by Microsoft. Before the offer from Microsoft became public the shares in Transeit shot up in value. According to the claim from the police exactly three days before the offer became public you excluded a sale of 500 Transeit shares. What makes your situation problematic is the fact that you had access to confidential information about the offer before it was made public due to your wife’s work. Whether you excluded the shares in your own name or in the name of the company your work for may also be relevant to the case. Due to the facts you have presented me it seem that the police have a strong case against you. The success of your case relies on persuading the police that you...

Freshmen Convocation

...Austin Alejos Ms. Garr Freshmen Convocation August 30, 2015 Freshmen Convocation Freshmen convocation was a meeting at the J. Schiedger Center for all freshmen to welcome them and talk about the university. I learned many cool new things and interesting facts. One of them was that this incoming freshmen class is the top academic class ever which is pretty cool to think since Lindenwood is the second oldest school west of the Mississippi. Another fact that I learned was that there are 815 incoming freshmen in this class and out of those there are 173 international students which is a ton. Out of those 815 freshmen, we come from 35 states and 37 countries. 518 out the 815 students have a 3.0 GPA or higher, which is 14% higher from last years’ freshmen class. Another interesting fact was that the average ACT score of the incoming freshmen is a 23.24. The President and all of the other people just talked about these facts and how proud they are of them and then the “voices only” group came on the stage and sang a couple songs for us. I learned quite a bit about the university that I did not know and was very surprised and honored to be apart of a class as high academic achieving as ours is. They also talked about all of the activities and sports they have here (which I am already on the baseball team), you can get involved in at Lindenwood and they all sounded like a lot of fun and great opportunities. I took away from that experience that this is a great and very...

Green Eggs And Jam Analysis

...Conformity and Control, The Story of Green Eggs and Jam By: TheSarcasmLord After watching Green Eggs and Jam, many people laugh at the silly video and take it for nothing more than meaningless entertainment, but in fact it has some deep meaning. Green Eggs and Jam by Jason Gastrow is a parody and perspective shift of the classic book Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, and can be viewed here on youtube. In Green Eggs and Jam, Gastrow takes the original concept of Green Eggs and Ham and follows the idea that in actuality Sam is fairly pushy for trying to force his opinion onto others. This aspect is not touched on in the original book, and it brings up the important point that if someone’s opinion is contrary to another person’s it should be...

Truth in Wildgoose Lodge

...accurate writing of the incident, the former still paints an adequate picture of what happened one night in eastern Ireland, and it is still regarded by many as the best source for what happened. But why? Why would factual truth be less favorable than an embellished one? David Shield’s Reality Hungers offers a glimpse at that answer by providing a different take on what is “real”. Through Shield’s work we can discover why an exaggerated account can be considered more realistic than a historically factual one. Defining reality is at the core of arguing for the legitimacy of Carelton’s story as a description of what happened at Wildgoose Lodge. In my opinion, reality, defined, means plausible human actions and sentiments that are based on fact, which elicits an appropriate emotion from viewers. This view on reality is reflected in the artistically focused Reality Hunger, where author David Shields explores what can be considered real in contemporary literature. This take on reality can be better explained through a brief example conducted by surveying present surroundings. I’m at a desk in a room with three other students, each of whom is acting typically and obeying the physical laws that are inherent with being human; I’m bored. Though lackluster, this scenario is my reality. There isn’t a dinosaur next to me. None of the students (whom I’m all assuming are sane) are giggling maniacally at some tragedy. Everything that happened was plausible and...

For example the fact that she did not leave to go home because of curfew indicates that she is thinking that it is alright for her to forego curfew and the wishes of her family. Instead she gave into the peer pressure that was administered by her new friends. There are additional factors that contribute to Sarah’s attitude and reasons why she did what she did. First it was apparent that Sarah suffered from a case of Normative social influence, which defined as a need to conform due to social pressures. Due to the fact that she was new to the school and the group that she was hanging out with did not want her to do, it made her make a choice of going to the party. ...better to prepare for a debate on changing a local ordinance that prohibits the distribution of paper ads and salespeople coming door to door for sales. Identify the advantages, types of sources, etc., and provide answers for possible disadvantages. Hard copy sources versus Web-based sources. I personally believe that Hard copy sources are more reliable than Web-based sources for the simple fact that hard copy source information is not easily tampered with. Not many people can just up and change information when ever they want to. With Web-based information you have to be more careful because everything you find on the Internet is not necessarily true or reliable information. I argue for Hard copy source only because the information is more authentic, but I would probably use Web-based information myself just because is way more convenient than hard copy information. I argue for Web-based sources for this topic because I feel that this debate in particular is about something that is solely opinionated. I think hard copy books and newspapers etc. are for debates that are about cold hard facts. The Internet is where you will find other opinions on the situation at hand and I believe that is something that will help you in you debate about this topic. The advantage of Web-based sources in this situation is that you have more information but with Hard copy sources the information available to you is limited. A disadvantage with Web-based sources again is the authenticity of certain...

Weather that is Difficult to Follow Conclusion/Closing: Global Warming: Fact or Fiction For years the glaciers have been melting and catching people’s attention, this has resulted in the rise of over 6 in. in the sea level where as a hundred years ago it was much lower. This raises the question as to whether global warming is a fact or fiction. Literature on global warming is comprised mostly on intelligent discussion on having "too much caution on global warming" (Nature, 1991) or "global warming is real" (Kerr, 1989, p. 603) rather than fiction. Let me break this down for you people, society is using to much resources and energy in assuring ourselves that global warming is in fact an issue at all. The top debate in favor of global warming being fiction is the lack of scientific evidence connecting the emissions of greenhouse gases as a result of human activity with global warming (Brown, 2010, p. 26). First and for most any connection at all is completely uncertain and there is no proof. Then we also have, people in today’s that say global warming is a fact and say that society, "have caused a number of environment issues, such as global...
