With the hectic schedule of most employees, time management is of the essence. Chewing and walking at the same time has become an indispensable skill – especially in New York City. Surviving the daily work routine in the Big Apple takes management, tenacity, and a copious amount of food trucks and carts. The history of street vendors in New York city is centuries old, and the service is as inherent to the city, as are the people who proudly call themselves New Yorkers.

For over 300 years, street vendors have found their place in the streets of the New York. In 1691, when New York went by the name of New Amsterdam, street vendors were regulated to peddle their goods in the major hubs of the city. In it's infancy, street vending was as crucial

Harvard Square

...Other influential characteristics can be seen in the Square’s efforts for preservation, like Out of Town News, which gives the Square its own local character. These architectural qualities influence visitors’ behaviors to use the space to their own benefit through the use of impulse buying, triangulation, and different seating arrangements. Harvard Square not only provides a historic place for individuals to shop, dine and congregate, but also an opportunity to find their own center in a large, impersonal city. Is it possible that a certain color of brick or position of wall can manipulate a person’s behavior? As strange as it sounds, this influence can be seen in an area situated in the middle of an Ivy League campus that contains several clothing stores, a large underground train station, and restaurants. This “heterogeneous” area, known as Harvard Square, despite its age, is still considered unique and upbeat place within a historic, elite university. Since the heart of the Square is shaped like a triangle, different parts of Cambridge touch this area. For example, on the side of Massachusetts Avenue are Harvard University and its historic Harvard Yard. On the other side, locals, visitors, and Harvard students enjoy shopping areas and restaurants. As for the middle of the Square, street vendors and visitors looking to relax tend to congregate near the Out of Town News building and the train station entrance. The aesthetic and influential qualities of the area come from the...

...International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy 30 Whose Solution is It? Development Ideology and the Work of MicroEntrepreneurs in Caribbean Context by Marina Karides, Florida Atlantic University An economic leader in the Caribbean, the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has incorporated micro-business development as one of its main strategies to alleviate poverty and unemployment and to spawn economic growth since the late 1980s (ILO 1991, 1998, Ministry of Finance 1996). Although the discovery of natural gas in the early nineties catapulted Trinidad’s economic growth rate to four percent per annum, unemployment and poverty continue to affect a large portion of the population. The majority of the population has not benefited from Trinidad’s economic growth. Thus, the government has attempted to create “a nation of entrepreneurs” in order to relieve some of the inequality that defines the society (Ministry of Trade and Industry 1997). Trinidad’s expansion of micro-enterprise programs reflects an international trend. Endorsed by non-governmental organizations, private financial institutions, international development agencies, including the World Bank, many scholars and development practitioners also view microenterprise assistance as a panacea for Third World poverty (Johnson and Kidder, 1999; Mosley and Hulme, 1998; Dignard and Havet, 1995; Grosh and Somolekae, 1996; Rakowski, 1994). Micro-enterprise development programs generally consist of training in business skills...

... History Coach, Inc. is the manufacture of the leather good company that got its start from manufacturing small leather goods. They’re known for ladies handbags, luggage, briefcases, wallets, and other accessories. Coach was founded in 1941 in New York City with a partnership called Gail Manufacturing Company. They began as a family-owned business with six leatherworkers that made small leather such as wallets and handbags. In 1946 Miles and Lillian Cahn joined as owners being very knowledgeable about the leatherwork business. By the 1950’s the Cahn had taken over the Coach business and was running it by themselves. In 1960 Cahn hired Cashin a well-known fashion designer who worked for Coach from 1962 to 1974 in which she brought their design out to the world. She instituted the coin purse and brighter colors as opposed to the brown and tan color they were using. She also designed matching shoes, key chains, eyewear, and the silver toggle that became Coach hallmark. In 1963 because of their success they were able to run their first ad in the New Yorker. In 1970 they ceased the production of their handbags in New York and moved and changed their name to Coach Products, Inc. From the 70’s to the 80’s Coach products was in very high demand and with a new vice president they started a mail-order business and specialty stores. Because the sales increased and the demand was greater than supply Coach had to restrict their sales to hand-selected vendors. In...

Gentrification In East Harlem

...positives that everyone hoped for because people are being forced out of homes that they lived in for decades. New York City is one of the places where we are seeing a lot of gentrification happening. East Harlem and Part of Brooklyn are suffering culturally and socially because of the sudden rise in the cost of housing. Strolling down from 96th to 125th streets one can easily feel that they have been to several different continents just by listening to the surrounding music and by looking at the murals on side of buildings. This is East Harlem, more commonly known as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio. This neighborhood is alive with history and culture because of the diversity of Puerto Rican, African American, Mexican, and Italians living there. Unfortunately, the continual displacement of many Harlem residents is forcing the long and rich culture/community to be separated. Increasing housing cost is the reason for this displacement of communities in East Harlem. This is especially affecting older residents (residents who lived there all their life) because...

...probably a 7-Eleven store in your neighborhood, and it’s a convenient place for picking up a can of Coke or a quick ham-and-cheese sandwich. It’s the largest convenience retailer in the world and the number one convenience store chain in the United States, with 5,300 stores. This company started out about 75 years ago as an ice-dock operator. When refrigerators started replacing iceboxes, the manager of each store asked customers one-by-one what items they’d like to stock in their new appliances. By asking customers directly and stocking only the items customers most wanted, the company grew and prospered. Over time, the company moved away from its roots, losing touch with customers along the way. It had no means of knowing what sold in each store and allowed vendors to decide what to stock on its shelves. Although large vendors, such as Coca-Cola and Frito-Lay, had powerful information systems for analyzing what they sold in individual stores, other vendors didn’t have such systems. Moreover, the vendors’ systems were designed to maximize opportunities for their businesses, not for 7-Eleven. 7-Eleven stores are not all alike. What their customers want depends a great deal on the neighborhood and region of the country where they are located. What sells well in Boston may not work in Texas. Without detailed knowledge of its customer and sales patterns, 7-Eleven was unable to determine which items were selling well, or which items were most profitable to sell in the first place. This...

...Accession Number: 102270931 Full Text: The Accounting profession is undergoing very trying times. The actions of a few have transformed it from one of the most highly respected professions to one that is now far less valued. The authors recount recent events which have served to discredit the profession. They examine current legislative reaction to these events, and provide an analysis of what can be done to regain Accounting's status. Introduction The rash of recent accounting-related indiscretions has left the profession tarnished. Not long ago, the accounting profession was among the most admired. What must accountants do to regain the trust they once enjoyed? The mistakes of the past must not be repeated. Indeed, fundamental changes are needed. The Government will certainly be an intervening factor, and its influence is now inevitable. Some would say that misleading practices contributed to the hyper growth of the stock market during the 1990's. (1) What actually happened is that the grand expectations of the stock market put great pressure on management to continuously outperform from year to year. Companies routinely presented analysts with 15% growth annually. "Making the numbers" depended on it. With such a mindset, it's no wonder that management was compelled to manipulate the numbers. There is tremendous pressure to find creative ways to inflate revenue when a salary bonus depends on making or exceeding a number. Consequently, the auditor invariably gets...

...History Precursors of ice cream An ice cream store in Damascus, Syria In the Persian Empire, people would pour grape-juice concentrate over snow, in a bowl, and eat this as a treat, especially when the weather was hot. Snow would either be saved in the cool-keeping underground chambers known as "yakhchal", or taken from snowfall that remained at the top of mountains by the summer capital - Hagmatana, Ecbatana or Hamedan of today. In 400 BC, the Persians went further and invented a special chilled food, made of rose water and vermicelli, which was served to royalty during summers.[4] The ice was mixed with saffron, fruits, and various other flavours. Ancient civilizations have served ice for cold foods for thousands of years. The BBC reports that a frozen mixture of milk and rice was used in China around 200 BC.[5] The Roman Emperor Nero (37–68) had ice brought from the mountains and combined it with fruit toppings. These were some early chilled delicacies.[6] Arabs were perhaps the first to use milk as a major ingredient in the production of ice cream. They sweetened it with sugar rather than fruit juices, and perfected means of commercial production. As early as the 10th century, ice cream was widespread among many of the Arab world's major cities, such as Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo. It was produced from milk or cream, often with some yoghurt, and was flavoured with rosewater, dried fruits and nuts. It is believed that the recipe was based on older Ancient Arabian, Mesopotamian...

...in England and surrounding countries. Many of the ingredients and ideas were imported from places such as China, North America, and India during the British Empire as a result immigration after the war (“Ploughman’s Lunch- Icons of England”, 2007). English food was historically characterized by its simplicity and reliance on high quality of natural produce during the Early Modern Period. Many of the qualities taken from this era can still be found in modern recipes for bread, cheese, roasted and stewed meats, meat and game pies, broths and boiled vegetables, and freshwater and saltwater fish. (“Ploughman’s Lunch- Icons of England”, 2007) Other now famous meals, such as fish and chips, were once street food sold by vendors to pedestrians on the street. England has now adopted new cuisines like curries from India and Bangladesh, and stir-fries from China and Thailand. Along with these foreign foods, French and Italian dishes are also now popular among English inhabitants. Britain also took to the fast food trend brought about from the United States. England continues to absorb culinary ideas from around the world while still keeping to their roots of natural produce and agriculture. English Breakfast On an average day a typical English person might begin the day with just a light breakfast. This morning meal might consist of cereal, scrambled or boiled eggs, or sometimes poached kippers, a type of fish. Sometimes a typical continental breakfast or porridge may be served...
