...hName: Johnson Waweru Occupation: Freelance writer Date: 26th November, 2014 Book Review: Playing for Keeps: A History of Early Baseball, 20th Anniversary Edition The development of sports from their early stages, their metamorphosis and evolution to their current form and status is one of the most interesting areas of study. Unfortunately, most writers on such subjects only concentrate on the sport itself and players without exploring other ulterior factors that influence the development of a sport such as the emotional, economic and social environment. The book, Playing for Keeps: A History of Early Baseball by Warren Goldstein is one of the few that have managed to avoid this perennial mistake. This paper is a review of the book, its content, author, objectives and ideas. The book traces the roots and development of baseball. It explains how it began with the culture of organized baseball in 1850's and later graduated from an amateur sport to a professional one a few decades later, thereafter developing into a business. The book not only traces the sport’s linear development, explaining the chronological events that marked its evolution, but also the constant and recurrent elements that have characterized it through different generations, the cyclical history. The writer shows how the game was an amateur club-based sport when it began around 1857. At the time, the main players were clerks, artisans and shopkeepers; there was nothing professional about the sport. Around...

...worldview is shown through his writing and life choices. I will cover the way he views the nature of God, his career, and family and how those areas of his life compare with my own beliefs and worldview. Hawking’s worldview when it comes to the nature of God is evident in his written works. In A Brief History of Time his theology is contrasted against Christian theism. The literary work focuses on his understanding of the laws that govern the universe. He concludes the universe was neither created nor destroyed; but just is a continuous form that has always been in place of its own power or ability. (Paradowski 2010). This theory assumes that the universe can create itself out of nothing, and God is no longer necessary when addressing the creation of the universe. Instead of a Christian base divine creation of the universe he advocates that it was uncreated, based on a theory of quantum gravity. Time is a relevant and driving factor in his explanations to the forming of the universe and many of his ideas. "Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going." (Bochynski, pg.180, 2011) Next Hawking’s view of his career was set from a young age. He was born in Oxford, England in 1942 and his father was renowned as researcher of tropical medicine. Hawking felt his genius was more catered to mathematics and physics...

...Journal of Economic Literature 2010, 48:4, 935–963 http:www.aeaweb.org/articles.php?doi=10.1257/jel.48.4.935 Quality Disclosure and Certification: Theory and Practice David Dranove and Ginger Zhe Jin* This essay reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on quality disclosure and certification. After comparing quality disclosure with other quality assurance mechanisms and describing a brief history of quality disclosure, we address two sets of theoretical issues. First, why don’t sellers voluntarily disclose through a process of “unraveling” and, given the lack of unraveling, is it desirable to mandate seller disclosure? Second, when we rely on certifiers to act as the intermediary of quality disclosure, do certifiers necessarily report unbiased and accurate information? We further review empirical evidence on these issues, with a particular focus on healthcare, education, and finance. The empirical review covers quality measurement, the effect of third-party disclosure on consumer choice and seller behavior, as well as the economics of certifiers. ( JEL D18, K32, L15, M31) 1. Introduction A young couple expecting their first child might consult healthgrades.com hospital rankings to help choose where to deliver their baby. A year later, the couple decides they need an SUV and consults performance specifications provided by manufacturers and reads Consumer Reports to learn about reliability. Soon thereafter, the couple ...

...A Brief History of Philippine Literature in English I. Pre-Colonial Period - Consisted of early Filipino literature passed down orally; oral pieces have a communal authorship – it was difficult to trace the original author of the piece since oral literature did not focus on ownership or copyright, rather on the act of storytelling itself; - Many oral pieces became lost in the wave of the new literary influence brought about by the Spanish colonization; however, according to the Philippine Literature: A History & Anthology, English Edition (Lumbera, B. & Lumbera C.), the pre-colonial period of Philippine literature is considered the longest in the country’s history; - Literature in this period is based on tradition, reflecting daily life activities such as housework, farming, fishing, hunting, and taking care of the children as well; - Oral pieces told stories which explained heroes and their adventures; they attempted to explain certain natural phenomena, and, at the same time, served as entertainment purposes; - Pre-colonial literature showed certain elements that linked the Filipino culture to other Southeast Asian countries (e.g. oral pieces which were performed through a tribal dance have certain similarities to the Malay dance); - This period in Philippine literature history represented the ethos of the people before the arrival of a huge cultural influence – literature as a cultural...

...Page 413 S: Page 413 is mainly about a story of a family's experience with their young child that has a hearing impairment. E: I can only imagine how difficult it would be to have a child with a hearing impairment. The story talked about how it was so difficult to get the child to wear the hearing aids and how the child would have to turn them off around loud people or alarms because if she didn't it would give her a headache. It must also be difficult for a child to get used to because children can be so mean sometimes, and I am sure it was difficult for the child to finally embrace her hearing aids. E: I don't have experience with any hearing impaired students, but the story that was told really informed me about how some students with hearing impairments live. The part of the story that interested me was the part about the loud teacher. The child didn't want to wear her hearing aid to school because the teacher was so loud that the hearing aid gave her a headache. Page 414 S: Page 414 introduces hearing impairments and discusses some difficulties that go along with hearing impairments, like language development. The page then goes on to talk about how the auditory system works, and how we use decibels and hertz to measure sound. E: The book mentions how some children can be mistaken as being stubborn, disobedient, or even lazy before they are diagnosed with having a hearing impairment. I think it is important, as future teachers, that we are looking out for...

...Daylight saving time was first proposed in 1895, but most countries have introduced it in the 1970s. From the very beginning, the idea has had its proponents and opponents. Many people claim that having to adjust clocks twice a year is not worthwhile, others, however, consider it an indispensable element of our lives. Daylight saving time may often prove beneficial. First of all, setting the clocks forward in spring causes evenings to be longer, as it provides us with an additional daylight hour. When the night falls later, people feel encouraged to go out more often and, consequently, to spend more money. Needless to say, a longer evening brings about the increase in consumption, which boosts the economy. In addition to that, time shifting...
