Right away the counselor assumed that Steve (the student) was struggling with the fear of being a new student on campus and that could be the result of his problem. But little did the counselor know that his issues where based on a larger scale. The counselor found himself going on a hero’s journey with Steve which was going through his unique past. As the story goes on through Steve’s journey I think the counselor learned a lot from the student. In the story it states that Steve has a personal goal in mind that he just wanted to be normal. The counselor on the other hand wanted to help Steve through any issues he might be having. But I don’t think the counselor quite understood Steve’s frustration until the part of the story was shared where Steve started to struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts. Leroy started in football, basketball and baseball in high school. However, he began drinking and smoking at the age of 16. Leroy was eligible for a football scholarship for college and in college he did well in football and he majored in parting. However, his grades suffered and when his college eligibility in football was up he decided to drop out of college. Shortly after he dropped out of college he met and married Rachel Rudow. He begins to work as a construction worker. Leroy and his wife had 3 kids; Leroy started smoking multiple packs of cigarettes a day, drinking a six pack, and at times, a quart of liquor. Leroy had become extremely abusing to his wife both physically and verbally. So Rachel, his first wife, decided to move out and went to Florida with her mom to avoid him and his behaviors. Leroy decided to move on and then he met his second wife Jane. Leroy was 39 by this time, however he continued going out with his friends, drinking, and smoking. He was an amazing football player and loved by everyone in his community. LeRoy was like any other sixteen year old. He had a lot of friends, muscular body and an amazing football player. What more could one ask for? LeRoy received a football scholarship and went to collage. During his time in collage LeRoy found himself drinking and smoking much more then before. LeRoy was married twice and divorced twice before the age of fifty. He fathered six children whom he never saw at all. LeRoy bounced around job to job but spent the majority of his earnings on alcohol. LeRoy gained a lot of weight and was up to 285 pounds by the time he reached forty eight. By the age of sixty one he found out that his health was declining fast. He was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and told he would not live too much longer. Within three years LeRoy was hospitalized and informed that he has emphysema. His attitude changed for the worse while being cared for. He did not have any visitors and wishes he would die.
