Energy drinks such as Red Bull, 5-Hour energy and Monster are the hottest-selling items of the beverage industry, but medical experts are concerned about the possible health hazards they pose and are on a mission for better regulation. The energy drink industry is doing very well looking at it from an economic standpoint. The industry has grown 60% between from 2008-2012, and had total U.S. sales of more than $12.5 billion in 2012, according to new market data from Packaged Facts. According to the “Energy Drinks and Shots: Market Trends in the U.S." report, sales of energy drinks and shots will grow to a value of $21.5 billion by 2017 (Energy drink sales). With this being said, the industry is facing many criticisms due to their health risk. Energy drinks are beverages with a high concentration of caffeine and other uppers. Some of the most laid-back regulatory requirements reside in the U.S. There are increasing reports of caffeine intoxication from energy drinks, and it seems likely that problems with caffeine dependence and withdrawal will also increase. They are sold in many places and are easily accessed by children, adolescents, and young adults. Many experts argue that this is actually their target market. Many reports warn about potential adverse effects associated with their consumption, especially in combination with alcohol among adolescents, and in combination with stimulant medications among children treated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In children and adolescents who are not habitual caffeine users, vulnerability to caffeine intoxication may be markedly increased due to an absence of tolerance. The combined use of caffeine and alcohol is increasing sharply, and studies suggest that such combined use may increase the rate of alcohol-related injury.
A story in the New York Times added to that concern, pointing out that the Food and

These Hoes Be Wilding

...Bad Habits Joshua Nunez Sep 19, 2012 The way I would use the five steps of listening to improve the communication in my dialogue will be firstly Wade wasn’t really receiving what rick was saying he was always on the defensive. So that would be the first thing that would’ve changed. If wade would have paid more attention to what rick was actually saying he would’ve understood that rick was simply telling him to keep his head up and stop beating himself up. Those are basic word of encouragement that Wade can actually learn from. If he what of understood what Rick was saying, he wouldn’t be so on the defense and his mood could’ve probably even shifted from sad or mad to happy. Wade didn’t reply constructively, he actually responded in a patronizing way, which didn’t make matters any better. If he would’ve responded in a better form the conversation could’ve possibly went a lot longer. Practicing the 5 steps of listening will give me an advantage in chosen industry because I will have a better understanding on what people may want from me. I’m a Recording art major and listening plays a big part in what I want to do. The five steps have not only taught me how to physically communicate with people but also how to actually completely understand what the other person is saying. A lot of people hear but don’t really listen. The five steps helped me not only in communicating but also in actually paying attention to music. Many people when having conversations listen to what they...

Analysis of 'Bros Before Hos: The Guy Code' by Michael Kimmel

...The idea of gender as we think of it is solely a social construct, born into existence by the pressure of tradition and the supremacy of the majority. This is true for our perceptions of "masculinity" and "femininity", and this point is driven home in "Bros Before Hoes: The Guy Code." In this essay on the assumed 'appropriate' behavior of men, Michael Kimmel points out the stereotypes men are taught to believe make them more manly. According to his interviews with various men from all over the country, the male social facade was put upon them by fathers, grandfathers, coaches, older brothers and other significant male role models to young boys. This essay showcases the power of role models and the influence of society. It...

Hip Hop: Song Analysis

...pioneered in the streets of New York as a response to the oppression of blacks during the civil rights movement, hip hop and its successful influence on its listeners, especially the black youth, was able to thrive due to its uncanny ability to adapt and respond to the problems that that era presents. From the socially and politically conscious hip hop (SPC hip hop) during the civil rights movements to the mainstream music we hear on the radio today, the difference in message projected by today’s modern, hyper-masculine hip hop onto society compared with that of SPC hip hop has become a controversial subject criticized by American media such as Byron Hurt’s movie “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” and Tricia Rose’s article “There Are Bitches and Hoes.” With regards to the negatives that hip-hop music could have on society, the songs “Let Nas Down” by J. Cole, “Come Get Me” by Jay-Z and “Bitches Ain’t Shit” by YG each respectively complicate, exemplify and extend Hurt’s claims that hip hop artists solely produce generic, hyper masculine mainstream music for the production of records; glorify violence and negatively portray women as sexual objects in order to prove their man hood. When the song “Let Nas Down” by J. Cole is analyzed through a historical context and compared to Hurt’s claim that hip hop artists solely produce mainstream music for their own benefit to the claim that is projected in the J. Cole’s lyrics, a complication between the two claims is illuminated. In the song “Let...

Baby Born in the Field

...Baby Born in the Field By ORHAN KEMAL In the cotton field which stretched as far as the eye could see, farm hands, fifteen or twenty in a row, worked steadily at the weeds around the seedlings. The temperature soared to a hundred and forty-nine in the sun. No bird flew in the shimmering, dust-gray sky. The sun seemed to sway. The peasants, soaked with sweat, pushed and pulled their hoes in a steady rhythm. The sharp edges of the hoes chopped the parched soil with a “thrush, thrush, thrush” sound. The song the farm hands sang in unison to the measured beat of their hoes was swallowed up in the sun’s scorching heat: Into what is left back they sow millet They sow it they reap it and they wrap it My darling sent me pear and pomegranate Ferho Uzeyir wiped the sweat off his swollen hands on his baggy black trousers and turned his bloodshot eyes on his wife swinging her hoe beside him. He spoke in Kurdish, “Wha? Whatsa matter?” Gulizar was a broad-shouldered husky woman. Her dried-up face, glittering with sweat, was contorted with deep lines and grimaces of intense pain. She did not answer. Angered, Ferho Uzeyir jabbed hi elbow into her side: “What’s up with you, woman?” Gulizar gave her husband a weary glance. Her eyes had sunk with fright into their sockets. Her hoe suddenly slipped from her hands to the ground. Pressing her huge belly with her hands, bent over, then fell to her knees on the red earth everywhere cracked by the blistering sun. The foreman, who...

Songs Of 1963 Juan Williams Analysis

...“Songs of the Summer of 1963 . . . and 2013” he compare and contrast the music from 1963 to 2013. I think that Williams’s assessment of contemporary rap music is accurate. In the first and second paragraph he takes about means behind the music and the words they uses. He said “Fifty years after the March on Washington, mystical memories of that seminal moment in the civil-rights era are less likely to focus on movement politics than on the great poetry and great music.” The music and poetry were important during the civil-right era, a lot of the poetry and music gave hope to people for a better tomorrow. However, in 2013 the music didn’t do anything that the music in 1962 did. “…Today’s degrading rap music—filled with the n-word, bitches and "hoes"—that confuses and depresses race relations in America now.” Instead of giving hope to people or telling people that it is ok to be yourself. They just depress races by using the words that the people in1963 fought to take way. In paragraph eleven through sixteen Williams takes about a song that helps inspire another song for the better good. “Sam Cooke… recorded "A Change...

Women in Rap Music

...Both the satiric piece “Bitches Ain’t Shit But Hoes and Tricks” and study: “Gangsta Misogyny: A Content Analysis of the Portrayals of Violence Against Women in Rap Music 1987-1993” serve a purpose to change the way women are portrayed in popular culture. These pieces effectively point out the fact that women are looked upon in a very negative light, though one is conducted as a study and the other is satire. The satirical piece also pokes fun at other aspects in popular culture. Beginning with the title, “Study Confirms That Bitches, As Suspected, Ain’t Shit But Hoes and Tricks” the piece pokes fun at common culture as well as academia because of the outlandish study. However, looking deeper into the article it is apparent that the piece exploits the way that society displays women as its main topic. The piece points out that this negative view isn’t a new idea as “Shakespeare used the sentence “Wenches art naut beside harlots and strumpets” in his private works, but it had never been presented publicly.” This gives a timeframe to the crisis. This piece really brings up the issue, however it lacks the resolve and seriousness needed to make a change. The study: “Gangsta Misogyny: A Content Analysis of the Portrayals of Violence Against Women in Rap Music 1987-1993” gives a better analysis of the same problem brought up in the satirical piece. This work is presented in a much different way and offers much more evidence and explanation supporting its claims. This piece states that...

Hip Hop

...Hip-hop world many male artists have created stereotypes for both men and women and their place in the Hip-hop music (NHP 06-11-2012). For some male artists these stereotypes have made success more achievable while, on the other hand, these stereotypes have made it harder for female MCs to rise to success. There’s no denying that Hip-hop stereotypes are an important component of Hip-hop performance (NHP 06-13-2012) in fact many artists today feel the need to utilize these stereotypes in order to get ahead in the game. For example, Big Sean is one talented MC in mainstream Hip-hop that doesn’t refrain from having half naked women dancing around in his music videos. His videos emphasize the most popular stereotypes which refer to women as “hoes”, “bitches” and “gold-diggers” (NHP 06-13-2012). Although these names are degrading and disrespectful to women, it is quite unfortunate that they have become acceptable in the music industry. It is also unfortunate that an artist’s work is based on the number of video vixens they have dancing in their videos; but that’s what sells. These notions have definitely shaped the perspective of the MC by creating this idea that MCing is a “male sport” and the only role women have to play in the Hip-hop world is to serve as accessories to men, and nothing more. Although this is very untrue, there some male MCs and...

Women wore plain wrap around skirts made of blankets, and deerskin vests. The women wore pretty much the same thing with stones and other fancy stuff encrusted into the dress. The children wore the exact same thing that the grown-ups did but smaller. The Relationship Between English And Native Americans

...Prior to their series of conflicts, the English and Native Americans experienced a relatively peaceful coexistence through the belief of sharing and trade. To start, the Indians shared their land and culture with the English, which allowed the two groups to live in the same area peacefully at first. In addition, the Indians and English exchanged goods through trade; one group had what the other group desired. For example, the “Pequots wanted European trade goods -- kettles, cloth, axes, [and] hoes” while the English “wanted furs and wampum” (Massacre at Mystic). The European goods helped Indians advance their tribe while the Indian goods helped the Europeans barter with other regional tribes. Trade created a mutualistic relationship between...
