Yet it would be two generations before the first 48-215 Holden came off the line in 1948, and motor vehicle production began in earnest. That’s a measure of how hard it is to establish an automotive industry, and a reminder of why Australian governments have dedicated themselves to ensuring that we remain a car-making country. In the past, governments have tried to protect the industry with tariffs and quotas. The Button Plan of the 1980s showed there was a better way. If we want the Australian car industry to prosper, we have to make it stronger — more innovative, more productive, more competitive and more export-focused. That’s what A New Car Plan for a Greener Future aims to do. Australia is one of only about fifteen nations in the world today that can create a car from scratch — taking it from the...

...defined as the state of being mentally and emotionally well-developed, and therefore responsible. Holden starts off as an immature teenager who ignores his problems instead of facing them, he deals with having depression because of the events that had a huge impact on his life, and struggles to find himself, but by the end of the novel he matures. One of the examples of how Holden matures is how he let’s go of keeping children from adulthood. In addition, he no longer wants to save children from growing up. A quote that Holden says in a very sophisticated manner is one of a couple of supporting reasons to his dream of keeping children from adulthood. ...contemporary debates about this issue in the news media. Introduction Car manufacturing in Australia was one of the strongest sector in the Australian economy. Within the past few months and ongoing weeks, there are several news being published that the Australian car manufacturing sector has become so small that that each car company is relying on the survival of the other. In relation to the debates and media news, this essay demonstrates, as to whether the Government should provide funds to car manufactures to prevent them operating overseas. The news has been all over the place that the three main car manufacturers, Toyota, Holden and Ford are expected to shut down their operations in Australia in the coming Years. The local content of the Australian made cars is in decline. According to figures supplied by the car makers, 30% of the parts to make Holden Cruise was sourced locally and 50% was Commodore. To survive beyond current models, car manufactures were going to be forced to rely more on foreign parts to keep the costs down. Due to low sales and low cost sales, the three manufactures are shutting down to recover from the massive financial losses and start making a profit. The data illustrates that the three factories have lost more than 1.5 billion dollars on their local manufacturing operations over the past decade, despite receiving more than twice that in the taxpayer over the same period. ...Holden Caulfield: Protector of Innocence The novel The Catcher in the Rye is a coming of age tale of a teenager’s journey into a mental breakdown. The main character, Holden Caulfield, sees the world as an extremely phony, cynical place that he wishes to escape from. As a result of this, he forms the idea that the only way to be free of the hypocrisy and cynicism of society is to maintain one’s childlike immaturity and innocence. Because of this idea, throughout the novel, Holden is trying desperately to hold on the shreds of innocence that he has left, all while trying to protect the innocence of those around him as well. Two minor characters mentioned in the novel that Holden tries to protect, Sunny and Phoebe, both display to the reader signs of developing maturity. Holden’s interactions with both Sunny and Phoebe provide prime examples of how even though Holden tries desperately to protect their innocence, growing up cannot be prevented. One of Holden’s most prominent traits throughout the novel is that he is has this urgent need to protect the people around him from losing their innocence like he did when his brother passed. Even though he constantly drinks, smokes, and curses, Holden’s main goal throughout the text is to make sure that innocence is maintained as long as possible before a person grows up and matures. “He struggles to preserve his own tenuous hold on youthful innocence-or as he sometimes puts it, ‘niceness’-and despairs when he finds that innocence lost...

...American International Journal of Contemporary Research Vol. 2 No. 2; February 2012 CLICO’s Collapse: Poor Corporate Governance Wayne Soverall1 Abstract The corporate collapse on January 30, 2009 of CLICO, the largest conglomerate in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean, is the worst financial shock experienced by the region to date. Today, more than two years later, its devastating effects are still being felt as the government continues to struggle with the bailout to stabilize the financial system, mitigate contagion risk, and resolve the CLICO crisis. Even one year after the bailout, there was still no resolution of the crisis. In view of the intractable nature of the CLICO collapse, the People’s Partnership government that came to power on May 24, 2010 established a commission of enquiry to investigate the causes of CLICO’s collapse, the scope of the MOU, the cost of the bailout, and the failure to provide a bailout to the Hindu Credit Union (HCU) that collapsed in 2008. There are many questions that are still unanswered. What were the root causes of CLICO’s collapse? What corporate governance structures and practices precipitated the collapse? Did the bailout create moral hazard? Who or what was to blame for the collapse? What action has the government taken to date? What lessons have been learnt and, more importantly, how can this situation be prevented from being repeated in the future? This concept paper examines these questions, analyzes the evidence to find...
