Holden Caulfield's Behavioral Issues

Behavioral issues can have detrimental effects on teens and young adults. Traumatic events have been known to negatively affect one's behavior. Although Holden has experienced a traumatic event of the death of a loved brother, these behavior issues are still detrimental and could have serious consequences in the near future. Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye by: JD Salinger has poor communication skills which put him in physical harm and angry outbursts that sabotage his relationships. Caulfield has many poor communication skills that are caused by his behavioral. Holden's poor communication skills, more specifically his tendency to instigate, is having immense effects on his wellbeing. In more than one situation Holden has been beaten …show more content…
His angry outbursts often lead to damaging his relationships. When ice skating with a girl he likes, Sally, Holden has one of these outbursts. He begins to yell and even belittle Sally, after she politely rejected to runaway with him. These types of outbursts are often present in toxic relationships. “Often these individuals [in toxic relationships] have an unpredictable and “hair-trigger” temper, (Cory)”, which is true to Holden. With Sally presenting just one flaw in Holden's plan, his temper snaps as he creates a public scene causing Sally to burst into tears. Holden's angry outbursts due to his poor temper has lead to him having toxic, unsteady relationships. These outbursts also extend to sabotage Holden's family relationships as well. Holden has a similar angry outburst at his little sister, Phoebe. When meeting up with Phoebe to say goodbye, before Holden runs away, Holden can't help but to have an outburst at his beloved sister as well. Although he admires her very much, when she pleads to come with him, his short temper snaps. Holden begins to scream at his sister, in a similar fashion he did to Sally, and create another public scene. Although his angry outburst is for his sister's wellbeing, this continues to strain their relationship. Phoebe quickly gets upset and refuses to talk to Holden.
