...The book ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar is about a group of “bad boys” who were sent to Camp Green Lake for committing crimes such as stealing and vandalism. At Camp Green Lake they have to dig holes every day in the middle of the heat to “build character”. Little did they know they were actually digging to find treasure that was buried many years ago. The main characters that are followed in the book are Stanley and Zero. Stanley was sent to Camp Green Lake for stealing a pair of famous baseballer’s shoes, which he didn’t actually steal. Zero was also sent to camp for stealing and abandoned as a child. He was always called stupid by the other boys and counsellors because he did not know how to read or write. There were many unfair acts evident throughout the novel such as: unsanitary living conditions, racist themes, and the bullying of Zero....

...Holes is a novel which was created by Louis Sachar. The novel won awards for the 1998 U.S. National Book Award for Young People's Literature and the 1999 Newbery Medal for the year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children". It is a great novel that my class read and hear are the top 3 reasons why it is a great novel. The three things that make it a great novel are the link ups, the backtracking and the character descriptions that Louis Sachar wrote. My opinion on why Holes is a great novel is because of all the link ups in the story. The link ups in the story bring the story together and it is genius of Louis Sachar to do this because it make the audience want to read more. In the book Elya Yelnats gets cursed by Madam Zeroni until the 4th generation when Stanley Yelnats carries Hector Zeroni up the mountain and sings the song. After, the curse is broken. Trout Walker looks for the treasure that kissing Kate Barlow stole from Stanley Yelnats the first but when he has a baby girl she digs as well. Then she becomes the warden of Camp Green Lake and makes the other boys dig for the treasure. Then when Stanley and Hector find the treasure, they find Stanley’s name on it so they get to keep it....

...Holes This novel’s author is Louis Sachar and their also is a movie out that is also called holes. The part of the story I was reading was at the time Zero or Hector Zeroni. After a week Stanley Yelnats, a fat and long kid who is not really that strong runs away too because he wants to find Zero. After walked about five miles he found Zero sitting in an upside down boat. Then he found him eating something that smelled like peaches and then Zero said,” I call it sploosh”(Sachar 166). He gave Stanley the last jar of sploosh and then they both got up and went to something that looked like a thumb. About 30 minutes later, they got to the mountain and started climbing it hoping to find water. About half way up th mountain they start seeing bushes and as higher they go the healthier the bushes look like. Then An hour later of climbing they reach the top of the mountain. By the time they reached the top it was midnight. Ney reach the top Stanley says, “It was a good thing we found this mountain that looked like a thumb”(170). The next day they bothe start to pull out the flowers and find that they are onions. And they start to notice some water coming out of a hole so Stanley gets the shovel and digs a hole and finds water. 3 days later tanley says, “I think we should go back ton...

...The novel “Holes” is a fictitious tale, with mystery, comedy, and adventure. “Holes” was written in 1998 in Texas by multi-award winning author Louis Sachar. Sachar was born March 20, 1954 in New York. He developed a love for reading in high school. He entered college and studied law. He needed to pick up a course, so he signed on to be a teacher’s aide. It became his favorite class (his first book mirrored his life as a teacher’s aide – “Louis the Yard”). Sachar practiced law until 1981 and decided to devote his time to writing. “Holes” is his most popular novel to date selling over 8 million copies worldwide and it had been made into a major motion picture by Disney. Sachar currently resides in Austin, Texas with his wife Carla and daughter Sherre. He continues to write daily focusing on stories for children and young adults. The main character is Stanley Yelnats IV (his last name spelled in reverse is his first name). There were many male Yelnats named Stanley for this reason. Stanley is overweight, bullied, has low self-esteem and no friends. He was cursed with bad luck (as all Yelnats have been for 125 years) because of his “no-good dirty rotten-pig-stealing” great-great grandfather who failed to follow instructions by Madame Zeroni. He never did steal a pig but was “cursed” with bad luck along with future Yelnat generations for disobeying Madame Zeroni. Stanley misses the school bus (a school mate put his books in the toilet), so he had to walk home...

...Tears of a Tiger By Sharon Draper The conflict I can make a prediction about is that Andrew Jackson will probably do something bad to himself. Because when Robert Washington dies, Andrew feels awful. He wishes he was the one who burned to death. Andrew might even kill himself, because he feels so bad. Or he might hurt someone else or try to blame it on B.J., Tyrone, or maybe even on Robert One event that has surprised me in the story is that Keisha has stayed with Andy through thick and thin. She let him cry on her shoulder. And he said she’s the only one he feels comfortable around. Also that she is trying to stop thinking that he should’ve died. She also encourages Andy to think on the brighter side of his life. She even went everywhere with him to Rob’s funeral, the hospital and also the trial. Keisha’s also his best friend. I’ve read another book like this called “Unbroken.” It’s about this girl that lived a long time ago. Her mother dies, and she had a hard time getting over it. Andy is just like the girl. He’s trying to get over Rob dying, but he just can’t. He got mad at Keisha for no apparent reason, at talent show. The girl in “Unbroken” gets over her mother dying, little by little, but she’s still sad sometimes. But instead of doing what the girl did, Andy got worse and worse. Andy is still in his journey with trying to get over Rob dying. The symbolism of the title is that as strong and brave tigers are, they still cry sometimes. A new...

...The Literacy of Empathy Holes by Louis Sachar is in my opinion is one of the best books ever written and one of the few books that a teacher has assigned that I really loved. I loved it because it was interesting, relatable and it has complex characters. It’s one of those books that can be read multiple times, but every time it’s read something new is found. It makes you laugh out loud and it makes you feel like you’ve known the characters for years. When you read it the descriptions are so vivid that you feel like you’re actually there. Of all the characters in the book, one of them really stuck out and resonated with me, personally. I remember where I was, how I felt and what I thought when I finally had my epiphany. I decided to go to the park to finish my summer reading because there were just too many distractions in my house. I was sitting on a park bench when I finally finished reading and then it all hit me. It felt like the world was moving in slow motion. I just knew that everyone around me could hear how loud my thoughts were but when I looked up everyone was carrying about in their normal routines. Women were bustling by me pushing strollers and trying to figure out their chores for the day and men were jogging by me in hopes of being healthy after forty. I knew that the realization I had just come to was so amazing and profound that the world just had to have stopped right in front of me. I felt that I had discovered something so valuable that people just had to...

I have selected the novel ‘Holes’, by Louis Sachar, and have built a novel study around the text. The plan is a six week unit, and the intention is for students to engage with the text, while completing scaffolding tasks to build up to a written piece of assessable work. I have selected this particular novel for a couple of reasons. The language used is fairly simple, and this will assist with student understanding of the text. Also, as this novel has been turned into a film, students have the option of watching the film in their spare time (or as a part of their activity booklet), to assist in attaining meaning from the text. As the ‘choice of curriculum, instruction, and discipline styles can be the difference between success and failure…’ (Obiakor, 2002), I have attempted to include a level of flexibility within the curriculum so that the individual teacher can teach to their own strengths regarding instruction; however, I have...

...Bombay High Court 1 1862 - 2012 A Journey of 150 Years through some Memorable Judgments Part 1 2 PREFACE A tiny kernel of an idea planted by Justice Mridula Bhatkar took root, and has resulted in a humble effort to present before you a compendium of the crux of some of the judgments of the Judges who have served the Bombay High Court since its inception in 1862.1 The initial idea was to document one judgment of the First Court from each year which was modified to include a judgment of the Bombay High Court of each year. I soon realized that it was too expansive an idea to merit a single judgment a year. I could collect and collate, as many as ten judgments which would qualify to show the development of the law we desired to portray. Having found too vast a number of such judgments, I had to settle at a more reasonable figure of about five judgments each year to showcase the progress this Court has made from its illustrious beginnings. Our Chief Justice Mohit Shah and our Justice Chandrachud wholeheartedly supported the idea to complement the Book published on this the sesquicentennial of our Court. As the number of Judges grew, fewer judgments of each Judge would be selected as illustrations. These judgments are not the only path-finding groundbreaking ones; they are also ones with simplicity and legal elegance. The number of judgments we settled upon just would not permit all deserving judgments to be compiled; only a few have been picked from each year as the first in...
