A’level Business - Scenario Case Study

You are employed as a travel agent. Your customer the Smith Family has come to see you with regards to a holiday they are planning in the summer of 2015. The Smiths are a husband and Wife team with two children, John aged 7 and Arthur aged 17.The Smiths have a number of objectives they want you to consider when making a recommendation as to holiday choices.

Their Objectives include:
£2,500 budget for the entire trip
They want evening entertainment for the whole family
Kids clubs
Easy access to the beach
Sun, sea
Your task is to write a report to the Smiths analysing three holiday destination i.e. Turkey, Disneyland, Florida and Majorca.

You will need to structure your essay as follows:

1. a short introduction 2. Analyse destinations, look at the advantages and disadvantages of each destination and the impact it might have on the family and their objectives 3. Make a justified recommendation. Why is the option you selected better than the other options.

Within this report I will be assessing the suitability of three holiday destination for the Smith Family. In order to do this it is critical to understand the objectives of the family; evidence within the case study clearly shows that the family have a budget to work too i.e. £2500 and a number of resort requirements like sun, sea, sand, children’s clubs and evening entertainment. Once I have analysed each resort I will make a just justified recommendation outlining why the resort option selected is the most suitable to meet the needs of the family.
The first destination I will analyse is Orlando, Florida, USA. This resort is an ideal destination for families with children (especially amongst the young and teenage years). It offers many attractions for the whole family, theme parks, bars, restaurants etc. which would be good for the family as mum and dad can enjoy themselves too. This would meet the objective set by the family of having entertainment and kids clubs, whilst allowing the adults of the group to relax and enjoy the holiday too. Orlando is also within easy access of the sea and beaches; however unlike Turkey or Majorca, both of which are within walking distance from the sea, the family will need to factor in the costs and time of travelling to the seaside. The weather in the summer is good and not too hot, unlike Turkey where temperatures in the summer months can exceed 40C; this could be problematic for a young child. Another point to consider is the flight duration, it is over a 9 hour flight, this could be difficult when travelling with a young child, as children can get bored and frustrated, which could add to the stress of the parents. It is by far the longest flight of the three destinations being reviewed. Another factor to consider is the cost; the family have a tight budget to keep too of £2,500, Orlando for a family of four would cost over £3,500 which is over budget. This option for that reason alone cannot be recommended.

Conclusion
After assessing all options I would recommend Majorca as the destination for the family. Majorca is only a 2 hours flight which is half the travel journey of Turkey and 3 times nearer than Orlando, so the stress of travel will be greatly reduced especially with a 7 year old child prone to becoming agitated and bored. Majorca also offers the best value for money, at approximately £2000 for an all-inclusive stay which includes all food and drink consumed at the hotel; this will leave the family enough money left over for spending at the resort. This is considerably cheaper than Orlando and approximately £700 cheaper than Turkey. Majorca also offers a tremendous variety of activities for the whole family, who may all have different tastes and hobbies such as kids and teenage clubs, sporting activities, daytrips, shopping, water sports and evening entertainment, something Orlando is restricted by as it is predominantly a theme park. The temperature in Majorca is suitable for a family break it is warm and sunny but not excessively hot unlike Turkey (temperature over 40C). This would be a more suitable choice for the family. Overall all the resorts all good family destination but Majorca is the resort that most meets the objectives of the family.
