Holography
(Holographic Interface Technology)
By: Tyler C Henry
Are you a fan of Star Wars; maybe even Iron Man? If you said yes then you definitely know about Holography. If not, well, keep reading because I’m about to describe and inform you of the world to come. Holography is a record, (generally associated with laser lights) of what most would say is in the form of an image. The information can consist of Images of an interference pattern, that when produced by two beams of coherent light are allowed to cooperate with each other. When one beam of light is scattered off an object before an interface pattern is formed, the hologram can then be castoff to produce an image of an object (Tupac Shakur, 2012 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif.).
Some very important key findings about holograms (or holography) was a theory developed and used before the laser was ever invented. There is no set date when this theory was established, but it could have been understood as early as the early 1800’s when a man named Auguste Fresnel created a mathematical equation for wave diffraction and interference. Its birth however is officially documented in 1947 due to research by a British electrical engineer named Dennis Gabor when he tried to improve electron microscopy. Dennis would later receive the Nobel Prize for his discoveries. Holography has influenced many of the technologies we use today such as, stress testing of aircraft wings, 3D TV, holographic data storage. It has also been applied to many of the problems we face today such as engineering, and manufacturing, discovering that people could use holographic images of likeness we could precisely compare them by superimposing them; allowing for the study of variations of any given object. With this discovery we could now ensure accurate contour up to thousandths of a centimeter. NASA and its Contributors have used this technology to further the study of titanium welds, deformation of honeycomb structures, and the formation of microcracks. Also using techniques of holography can see fluid flow, map temperature and density changes in wind tunnels and rocket nozzles. These discoveries replace previous uses of conventional temperature and pressure probes, which were faulty and inaccurate. E.P.A (Environmental Protection Agency) and private contributors developed a system in which they measure the efficiency of “scrubbers”, used to remove pollutants from smokestacks.
In the medical field holography has helped better the images from “CAT scans” allowing for better treatments of Tumors or other developments. Enhanced dental records can be taken and stored as well, such as dental casts, making the images reusable at any given time instead of retaking measurements. They have also been used to map out stress levels and patterns on hipbones and artificial replacements, allowing for artificial joints to be augmented reflect load transfer of other joints. Also biologically, holography has enhanced microscopy to see a three dimensional object instead of one side (specifically microorganisms). In specific detail taking a fluid drop to freeze the motion in a single instant in time. This can then be set, observed and recorded.
The advertising industry has also inducted holography into the way it does business such as advertising to the public a hologram of the item/ items it wants to sell (Exp. Dodge wants to release its new truck to the public they might use a holographic display to advertise the model to catch the public’s eye). Holography has untimely changed the art field forever by allowing three dimensional imaging and allowing easy distribution of art, such as, sculptures from around the world. In some cases artiest have turned the hologram itself into artwork, proving to be a useful tool in itself.
As you can see from the examples I’ve listed Holography plays a significant role in the world today. With technology constantly advancing so shall holography; as it has interwoven itself with society, it seems that it is inevitable as holographic technology is everywhere from credit cards to x rays. It is highly likely well will continue to see holograms impact and parallel life as long as the human race exists. Next generation holograms are already being developed if not here already. These holographic advances will allow for greater interactivity, improve user capture experiences, they will eliminate the screen real estate problems, and will bring more advances in component technologies. As you can see the pros for holographic tech is greatly overpowering to the cons but let’s view them in detail. In all research I have flipped threw I have found only two major problems that could play a part in its growth toward the future. Clear imaging without side effects could play a huge role as currently users could still see a flat plain of pixels, concluding in conflict in depth cues, which could lead nausea, severe headaches and even eye fatigue. Also a major problem that could keep holography from advancing would be your basic component prices. Tupac Shakur, 2012 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, California was cool but very costly. Never the less prices have gone down in the last two decades but, recreating Tupac Shakur or images like that will cost anywhere from $100,000 to $400,000. The company behind the technology later filed for bankruptcy. So as you can see affordability is the key to advancements to a new age of holographic technology. Overall holography continues to move towards “Star Wars and Iron Man holographic technology” and it’s only a matter of time before we have it.

The Holographic Universe Does Objective Reality Exist? by Michael Talbot 3-12-2006 In 1982, a remarkable event took place. At the University of Paris, a research team led by physicist Alain Aspect performed what may turn out to be one of the most important experiments of the 20th Century. You did not hear about it on the evening news. In fact, unless you are in the habit of reading scientific journals, you probably have never even heard Aspect's name though there are some who believe his discovery may change the face of Science. Aspect and his team discovered that under certain circumstances subatomic particles such as electrons are able to instantaneously communicate with each other regardless of the distance separating them. It doesn't matter whether they are 10 feet or 10 billion miles apart. Somehow, each particle always seems to know what the other is doing. The problem with this feat is that it violates Einstein's long-held tenet that no communication can travel faster than the speed-of-light...

Hologram Projector: a Product Innovation

...I. Theoretical Background A holographic projector is a unique display system. The holographic projector system embodies a top of the range full High Definition Hologram Projector with an in-house computer system capable of feeding the projector with fully uncompressed video files. It consist of two technologies namely, the holography and the projector. Holography is a method which allows three-dimensional images to be made. It includes the use of a laser, interference, diffraction, light intensity recording, and suitable illumination of the recording. The image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in exactly the same way as if the object are still present, therefore making it three-dimensional. The projector that will be used in this project is a overhead projector. An overhead projector is a variation of the common slide projector that is used to display images to a group of people. II. Project Description Hologram Projector is a projector wherein it can reflect the full dimension of an image. It consists of a laser, interference, and diffraction, light intensity recording and suitable illumination of the recording. Hologram Projector is AC operated. It projects special white light or laser light. The light produces two- and three-dimensional images. Authentic 3-D images require laser-based holographic projectors. It can be presented from different angles and can be seen in true perspective. III. Process Description To come...

Heliography

...INTRODUCTION Devices that use light to store and read data have been the backbone of data storage for nearly two decades. Compact discs revolutionized data storage in the early 1980s, allowing multi-megabytes of data to be stored on a disc that has a diameter of a mere 12 centimeters and a thickness of about 1.2 millimeters. In 1997, an improved version of the CD, called a digital versatile disc (DVD), was released, which enabled the storage of full-length movies on a single disc. CDs and DVDs are the primary data storage methods for music, software, personal computing and video. A CD can hold 783 megabytes of data. A double-sided, double-layer DVD can hold 15.9 GB of data, which is about eight hours of movies. These conventional storage mediums meet today's storage needs, but storage technologies have to evolve to keep pace with increasing consumer demand. CDs, DVDs and magnetic storage all store bits of information on the surface of a recording medium. In order to increase storage capabilities, scientists are now working on a new optical storage method called holographic memory that will go beneath the surface and use the volume of the recording medium for storage, instead of only the surface area. Three-dimensional data storage will be able to store more information in a smaller space and offer faster data transfer times. Holographic memory is developing technology that has promised...

Star Wars: A Real Life Hologram Video

...Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see a real-life hologram of someone, like in Star Wars? Have you ever wanted to have a conversation with a real hologram of a person? It has always been a dream for many people to create hologram video of people ever since the idea was introduced. Well in 2012, researchers at the Human Media Lab at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada made this dream into a creation. Using a couple of XBox Kinect systems and a glass “tube”, they created a way to see an entire person’s body in hologram form with a0 live video feed. They call this holographic creation the “Telehuman” and it is meant to replicate what is seen in Science Fiction movies and shows. The “Telehuman” is a cylindrical “tube” that stands...

Horologium Evolution

...I've always struggled the concept of time, so it excited me to see that a constellation that represented the concept of time existed. Horologium is a small, faint constellation lying in the southern sky created by Louis de Lacaille. Lacaille originally named it Horologium Oscillitorium, meaning "the pendulum clock" in Latin, but it was later shortened to Horologium ("clock"). When we look up at the stars, we're witnessing history being made. Because we're lightyears away from the majority of stars, we can only see them in their past. Some have even exploded or died out, but we still see them because of the distance between us. The concept of there being a constellation out there, representing time, while we can only ever see its past, is why Horologium is my constellation of choice. Horologium was discovered in the 18th century and is the 58th constellation in size, occupying an estimated area 249 square degrees. It's a representation of the pendulum clock that Lacaille used to time his observations, and he originally named it the Pendulum Clock to honor Christiaan Hughes. The constellation doesn't have any mythology behind its creation, and doesn't have any bright stars like some others do. The surrounding constellations are Hydrus, Dorado, Eridanus, Reticulum, and Caelum. In Greek mythology, the Horae are godesses of time. They were believed to be the daughters of Zeus and Themis, and were favored by farmers during the growing seasons. They were divided into two generations...

Futuring

...Jarod Kent Generating solutions using futuring Module 3 October 20, 2015 Futuring is essentially the idea of imagining yourself in a particular situation where you are in the future. In this small essay, I will be picturing myself in four different scenarios placed in different timelines in the future. First, I will picture myself in 2020, four years and two months from now, making a telephone call. The second hypothetical scene, I will picture myself in 2025 doing a homework assignment. The third scenario, I will place myself in 2050 eating a meal with my family. The forth scenario, I will picture myself almost 100 years from now in 2125 doing a homework assignment. With these scenarios I will use the technique, futuring, to image myself in the future and explain each setting. Now, what would happen if I, at the age I am now, was in the year 2020? What would happen if I were to make a phone call in 2020? Phones then have become foldable. You can place them in your pockets with very little cases with cracked phones from their convenient folding ability. Though, only five years from now, folding with some major phone upgrades are the only prevalent ideas with phones. The problem is that with these foldable phones, battery life has become a very heavy issue with foldable phones because the battery cannot exceed past the foldable dimensions of each phone. So what would happen in 2025, ten years from now in the future while doing homework? I honestly do not believe that...

Popular Media

...The popular media I have chosen is 3D technology. The introduction of 3D started back in 1844 with the invention of the stereoscope by David Brewster. It was a device that could make a photograph three dimensional. Ever since then the world has fallen in love with the idea of 3D. Since 1844 there have been eight different incarnations of 3D, from the basic red and blue glasses all the way up to the digital stereoscopic television channels that broadcast in 3D 24/7. Let us fast forward to the “Star Trek” generation. With popular television science fiction programs depicting holographic images popping out for the characters to interact with, came a major push in the 3D department. Until then 3D had been majorly disregarded as it was expensive to use and not many theaters were equipped with the technology. Although previous incarnations of 3D were bulky and awkward, the new innovation of stereoscopic 3D has brought 3D back in a big way. Stereoscopic 3D has made 3D a part of our everyday lives now. No longer is it something that is reserved just for movies. We now see movies, television, and even virtual reality video games all being made into stereoscopic 3D. Soon it will be a basic feature of televisions and computers, much like color is now. Future applications of 3D could even evolve so far as holographic imagery that would have major military and personal uses. It is this writer’s belief that 3D has finally made its way into our everyday life, something that will become as commonplace...

...Hard drives store data in the magnetic polarization of small patches of the surface coating on a (normally) metal disk. The maximum areal density is defined by the size of the magnetic particles in the surface, as well as the size of the "head" used to read and write the data. The areal density of disk storage devices has increased dramatically since IBM introduced the RAMAC, the first hard disk in 1956. RAMAC had an areal density of 2,000 bit/in². Commercial hard drives in 2005 typically offer densities between 100 and 150 Gbit/in², an increase of about 75 million times over the RAMAC. In 2005 Toshiba introduced a new hard drive using perpendicular recording, which features a density of 179 Gbit/in².[1] Toshiba's experimental systems have demonstrated 277 Gbit/in², and in 2006 Seagate Technology demonstrated a drive with a 421 Gbit/in² density.[2] It is expected that perpendicular recording technology can scale to about 1 Tbit/in² at its maximum. [3] Compact Discs (CDs), another common storage media of the early 2000s, stores data in small pits in plastic surface that is then covered with a thin layer of reflective metal. The standard defines pits that are 0.83 micrometers long and 0.5 micrometers wide, arranged in tracks spaced 1.6 micrometers apart, offering a density of about 0.90 Gbit/in². DVD disks are essentially a "product improved" CD, using more of the disk surface, smaller pits (0.64 micrometers), and tighter tracks (0.74 micrometers), offering a density of about...

Hologram Assignment

...from the original object. Fig. 1. Hologram recording: the interference pattern produced by the reference wave and the object wave is recorded. A hologram is usually recorded on a photographic plate or a flat piece of film, but produces a three-dimensional image. In addition, making a hologram does not involve recording an image in the conventional sense In conventional imaging techniques, such as photography, what is recorded is merely the intensity distribution in the original scene. As a result, all information about the optical paths to different parts of the scene is lost. The unique characteristic of holography is the idea of recording both the phase and the amplitude of the light waves from an object. Since all recording materials respond only to the intensity in the image, it is necessary to convert the phase information into variations of intensity. Holography does this by using coherent illumination and introducing, as shown in figure 1, a reference beam derived from the same source. The photographic film records the interference pattern produced by this reference beam and the light waves scattered by the object. Since the intensity at any point in this interference pattern also depends on the phase of the object wave, the resulting recording (the hologram) contains information on the phase as well as the amplitude of the object wave. If the hologram is illuminated once again with the original reference wave, as shown in figure 2, it reconstructs the original object...

Co2 Effects and Causes

...CO2 effects on the climate. A new report from Imperial College London looks at what measures are required to reduce CO2 emissions and limit the extent of man-made climate change. Human activities like shipping, construction and industry are increasing the concentration of CO2 entering the atmosphere, which research has overwhelmingly shown is heating the planet and changing our climate. Many studies, including those by the International Energy Agency, suggest that global CO2 emissions are set to pass 50 Giga-tonnes per year by 2050 if there is no further action by governments to reduce them over the coming years. Now researchers at Imperial have considered what technologies and interventions are required to limit these global CO2 emissions from human activity to 15 Giga-tonnes per year by 2050, a level that many studies show could help to limit global warming to around two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Their report concludes that reaching this target will cost $2 trillion per year by 2050, which is about one per cent of the world's GDP in 2050, and considerably less than this if fossil fuel prices increase with time. – Professor Nilay Shah Report author It will require a broad range of low-carbon technologies to be implemented across several sectors of the economy – power, industry, buildings and transport. Report author, Professor Nilay Shah from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial said: "A fundamental...

A Shattered Visage: Modernity and Its Visual Role in Shelley's Ozymandias

...A Shattered Visage: Modernity and its visual role in Shelley's Ozymandias Barring some unforeseen individual circumstance, you can always count on your eyesight as one of your primary avenues of perception. This has always been the case for mankind, our gift of vision has allotted us the ability to reproduce images of the world around us in our own right. We can craft a version of the world entirely out of our minds. We have created billion dollar industries on the reproduction and sale of images and effectively monetized one of the most basic forms of perception. But what if vision, something we like to swear by in our media-saturated society, doesn't work the same ways at the same times? Does the experience of looking at the Mona Lisa in 1814 differ from looking at it in the year 2014? Did the Sistine Chapel mean something completely different to someone first seeing it as opposed to someone seeing it on some tour in the present day? The two pieces I chose to discuss deal with these questions a lot. Percy Bysshe Shelley's seminal sonnet “Ozymandias” deals with a traveler looking at the remains of a massive statue and empire hundreds, if not thousands of years later. Jonathan Crary's “Modernity and the Problem of the Observer” deals with how our modes of visual perception have changed drastically from the pre-industrial era into the digital age, where the infinite replication of images is the norm. In marrying commentary on both of these literary artifacts, I will attempt...

5 Research Questions for the Term Paper.

...5 Research Questions for the Term Paper. CIS-512 Andrew Dick Dr. Hamid Gooda 1. The first question of the five is about Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processors. AMD is known for their processors, however, their line of products that they have stems even further now. In the microprocessors division they have the Athlon variety, X2, K10, X2, AMD Opteron (Miller, 2010), are the specific microprocessors that they have. They also offer servers. The processors of the Opteron are the processors that are available. AMD also offers motherboards to their users as well The AMD Crossfire series are available in this line along with many others. AMD recently acquired a leading video card manufacturer and is promising more advanced video capabilities coded into new versions of their motherboards. It also offers software and memory solutions for businesses. AMD is said to offer the same basic product as Intel, however, at a cheaper price. Intel is established as the market leader in producing motherboards and processing chips for personal computers, and their prices and development have influenced AMD from the start (Miller, 2010), AMD actually produces "clones" of Intel products as well as their own specific line of chips and motherboards as explained above. The AMD Athlon XP processor runs very close to an Intel 4 processor and it is about half the price (Miller, 2010). For example, if a side-by-side comparison is used between the AMD Athlon 64 X2(939) and the Intel Core 2 Extreme...
