Is Your Child Getting the Best Education Possible?
By: Christina Chubb

Is your child getting the best education that he or she can? Today's parents have options when it comes to how their child receives an education. The most prominent options are private schools and public schools. Charter schools and online schools are a part of public schooling ("Home Schooling | Ohio Department of Education", 2014). However, there is another option- home schooling. Home schooling entails a parent being the teacher and teaching their child. There is an estimated 2.2 million children who are being home schooled (Ray, 2014). There are many reasons why parents prefer to home school their children; whether it be for religious reasons, the unhappiness with their local school district or because they are afraid for their child's safety. While both types of education have core courses and distractions in common, they differ on how things are being paid for and how students socially interact. In traditional schools and home schools across the country, students are required to learn the core subjects like math and science, but they differ in how the core materials are presented to their respective students. It has been my experience, both as a student and as a parent, that lessons taught in school are limited to the number hours in a school day and by how much help a student needs. In contrast, parents who are teaching their children in a home school environment can do schoolwork wherever and whenever they can; even a trip to the grocery store can be turned into a math lesson, allowing the child to learn at his or her own pace. Another way a home educated student might get a class they need is by checking with their local school district to see if they can take the needed class at the school itself. Regardless of where you learn, or the way you learn, most students are

Home School vs Public Education

...Home School Vs Public School Education Children in the United States are educated at home or in public school. When choosing a path of education one may want to consider learning environment, social life, and curriculum when making the best decision for their child’s private or public education. The learning environment is very important to a child’s education and there are positive and negative aspects of both home school and public schools. Each child is unique and will adapt to a certain learning environment differently. Public schools can give a child a head start working with others that most jobs require to do after they complete his or her education. Public schools offer an environment that consists of other students of the same age trying to achieve the same goals all together; this is also known as integral learning. This form of learning can help a child stay motivated to keep up with his or her assignment so the student is not left behind. This form of learning also gives the child a sense of competition with his or her peers so they work harder to get the best grades he or she can receive. There are also benefits to home schools; the child can get as much rest as needed, work at his/her own pace, and learn in an environment that has fewer distractions. When learning, a student needs plenty of rest in order to remain focused on his/hers assignments. From personal experience it is challenging to learn when tired. Most home school children do not have to wake...

These differences can either hinder or improve a child’s way of learning and developing. If children find themselves to distract while being in a classroom with their peers, may be the better choice. To start the first thing that comes to most parent’s mind is the amount of time, and money that you have to put in when it comes to choosing. When it come to home schooling, you do spend a lot of time with your children, which is not bad. There are also pros, and cons of public education with the pros being the child is receiving an education from a professionally trained teacher. They are better prepared in everyday teachings that the child will receive. The curriculum is outlined for the year on what the child will be taught, what is expected to be taught to the child. Children are learning how to socialize and realize how different a world we have. There is no hiding that fact. Depending on your day-to-day life, this might be easy for you. This is the first thing you have to look at when making that choice for your children. When it comes to public school, you get to send your children to a different location for anywhere between four to eight hours, and this is not bad if your a working parent. If children find that they get side tracked while attempting to work alone then public schooling may be more helpful. When it comes to teaching...

Comparison Between..

...Benefits and disadvantages of home schooling vs public schools Chancia Tokyo international University Academic composition I Those past years we have a lot of children or teenager who can decide where they want to study. They can study in a class surrounded by other students or at home, alone. Public school presents a lot of opportunity for teenagers to be social with other students, do some extracurricular activities and go outside to hang out with their friends. Also, as I mentioned before it is not the only one, there is homeschooling. By being homeschooled, students gain the same education as what the public schools students study. Thus, they can study whatever they want. It only depends on the environment and the academic contents that the parents or teenagers are using, to teach them or themselves. So what is best for the education of our children? Both of them are mainly good, the only thing that we need to do is it to give, children’s, the best education. To begin with, we all know that parents want the best for their children’s, which is not bad and apparently from an article written by Shaw I., homeschooling are getting more famous each year. Certainly the home can be called a school as there are around 1.5 million children in the United States are homeschooled. Home schooled children are able to practice their religion, can have a different curriculum, and different disciplinary actions, but both can lead to a well educated student. Public schools, even with all of their bad press, are still the most popular way to educate a child (Homeschool Or Public School? 2012) According to www.hslada.org, which provides legal analysis of home school laws, someone that is interested in homeschooling their children should follow the law of the state in which they reside. Laws governing home school education vary by state and according to the 10th Amendment of the Constitution the power to regulate all forms of education belong to the states. Homeschooling is included in this protection. The Constitution states that the federal government is not allowed to interfere with or control public or private forms of education. Why do they choose a specific type of school and what effect does it have on the children? The first type of school that parents can choose from is public school. This type of school is funded by the local, state and federal government. This type of school follows a certain curriculum that is given by the local government, as well as the state government. (Vercillo, 2012) These schools are open to any student that lives within the school district for that city. Parents choose this type of school for a lot of reasons. Homeschool Versus Public School

...Homeschool vs. Public School David and Bradley, who are neighbors, both wake up in the morning at 7. David gathers his book bag to walk over to the bus and travels to school. However, Bradley walks into his kitchen to begin his school work. How are these circumstances different? David attends a public school whereas Bradley is homeschooled. Which student will receive a better education? Academically, both learning environments give students the chance to achieve higher goals, so they can be successful in a future job. Teachers and parents try their very best to help students along the path to success by challenging them in every area of their life. Challenges of both homeschool and public school consist of offering advanced placement classes and tests that require students to study, as well as setting a requirement of classes that need to be taken in order for students to graduate. Emotionally, students may have a hard time with the challenges because there is a lot of pressure involving studying and test taking to the meet requirements. Required class work may exhaust students and run them down both emotionally and physically. When comparing homeschool to public school, homeschooling is a better alternative for many students. Students enrolled in public school often face situations that can affect their life emotionally, physically, and socially. Throughout the year, students build relationships with teachers and their peers. According to Bridget N. Watts...

The Equal Protection Clause

...involved racism. Though it sometimes limited rights, the Equal Protection clause eventually became a key element to justice. Lum vs. Rice (1927) was a Supreme Court case where the Mississippi education board did not allow a nine year old girl to attend the all-white Rosedale Consolidated School because of her ethnicity. Gong Lum’s daughter, Martha Lum, was Chinese and a native-born in the United States. One day, a superintendent at Rosedale told Martha to leave school because she was not Caucasian. Gong Lum later filed for suit and the state trial court was in his favor. The state took the issue to officials to readmit Martha Lum, however, the Supreme Court opposed the state’s decision. The Supreme Court supported their argument from the Cumming vs. Richmond County Board of Education case (1899) where it showed that schools are allowed to be separated for white and “colored” students. They also focused on whether or not Martha Lum was being denied of her equal protection of the laws from the 14th Amendment. This brought the Supreme Court to uphold the Plessy vs. Ferguson case (1896) by approaching the concept “separate but equal.” They declared that Martha Lum was not white and the Board of Trustees was allowed to exclude her from Rosedale. In 1954, the Brown family went against the Board of Education because they believed segregated schools can never be equal despite their similar...
