...Melissa Edwards Home-Style Cookies BUS 644 Operations Management Week 1 Assignment 1 August 21, 2011 Home-Style Cookies The production process for this small town cookie company is called a batch processing system (Stevenson, 2009). The batch processing system is basically used when a moderate volume of goods or services are desired, and it can handle a moderate variety in products or services (Stevenson, 2009). The process begins as soon as the management gets orders form distributers; these orders are then used to schedule the production (Stevenson, 2009). In the beginning of each shift has a list made up of the cookies that will be made that day and then are delivered to the person that is in charge of the mixing (Stevenson, 2009). The person who is in charge of the list and mixing enters the information into the computer, since the master list includes all the ingredients that are needed for the cookies (Stevenson, 2009). After putting the ingredients into the computer, the computer then determines the amount of ingredients that are needed, according to the quantity of the cookies that are being ordered, and relay information to the storage silos that are located outside the plant, where the main ingredients are stored (Stevenson, 2009). The company has two different ways to increase its productivity. The first way is that the diagonal-cut cookies tend to require less space than straight-cut cookies, and the result in a higher level of productivity. In addition...

...Home-Style Cookies Jane Smith BUS644: Operations Management Professor Ben-Gourion Mestman February 6, 2012 Home-Style Cookies Production Processes The batch processing system begins when orders are received from distributors. Production schedules are based on the orders received. Each day, a list of cookies to be made is given to the person in charge of mixing. The ingredients needed are activated through a master list containing all the ingredients to ensure accuracy. After all ingredients are mixed, the batter is then poured so the cookies can be baked. Once the cookies are finished baking, they are cooled and then placed in the boxes manually by staff who removes the broken or deformed cookies. The boxes are then wrapped, sealed, and labeled automatically. The company has increased productivity by cutting the non-filled individual cookies on a diagonal so more cookies can bake at a time. In addition, automating the ingredients helps cut back on human error when mixing the ingredients. Increasing the length of the ovens made it possible to bake more cookies at one time. This increase in addition with cutting the non-filled cookies on the diagonal, makes it possible to be more productive. When one uses the machine productivity measure, it is evident that the number of units of output divided by the dollar value of output per machine hour is higher increasing the length of the oven. The company is making the right decision...

...poems? So pay for them", is by Wendy Cope, who is a poet. The text shows her opinion of copyright violation and illegal downloading, which is an opposing view than the one from Peter Sunde. She suffers from the loose grip on the copyright rules because everybody can just get anything from the internet, without her approval. Of course having it on the internet might affect the sales of her poems. And the fact that you can get it free of the internet, might not be a good thing if her income depends on how well her book sells. Wendy Cope feels that ignoring copyright is a problem because everyone might harm people by doing so, without even knowing it. 2. Compare the writing styles, e.g. language and tone, in texts 2 and 3. Illustrate your answer with examples from the texts. The writing styles in the text two and three are a bit different, but we need to keep in mind that there are different purposes and targets. Therefore the words used in the two texts are slightly different. The comments on Peter Sunde's article, in text two, are...

...Smart cookie - OREO Executive Summary: For most of its 100-year existence, Oreo was America's best loved cookie, but today it is a global brand. Faced with stagnation in the domestic market, Kraft Foods moved it into emerging markets where it made some mistakes, learnt from them and ultimately triumphed. This case study looks at the strategies used to win over customers in China and India. On March 6, 2012, the famous cookie brand, Oreo, celebrated its 100th birthday. From humble beginnings in a Nabisco bakery in New York City, Oreo has grown to become the bestselling cookie brand of the 21st century generating $1.5 billion in global annual revenues. Currently owned by Kraft Foods Inc, Oreo is one of the company's dozen billiondollar brands. Until the mid-1990s, Oreo largely focused on the US market - as reflected in one of its popular advertising slogans from the 1980s, "America's Best Loved Cookie". But the dominant position in the US limited growth opportunities and spurred Kraft to turn to international markets. With China and India representing possibly the jewels in the crown of international target markets due to their sheer size, Oreo was launched in China in 1996. The China launch was based on the implicit assumption that what made it successful in its home market would be a winning formula in any other market. However, after almost a decade in China, Oreo cookies were not a hit as anticipated, according to Lorna Davis, in charge of the global biscuit division...

...Home-Style Cookies Briefly describe the cookie production process. The Baking Company system called batching to make the dough with which they bake their cookies. According to the textbook, batch processing is used when a moderate value or goods or services are desired, and it can produce making a variety of products and services (Stevenson, 2009). Once an order is received from distributors, production is scheduled from these orders. The first step in the production process is to send the order to the mixing person. The person in who mixes the dough will determine which ingredients are needed to produce the cookies that are ordered. The ingredients are then entered into the computer that determines what quantities of each ingredient is needed. The computer will then send those results to the silos that contain each ingredient. The silos will then automatically release the correct amount needed to the mixing machines. Once the mixing occurs then the batter is cut into the cookie shape and deposited on a conveyor belt that takes it to the oven for baking. After they are baked, they set them out to cool. Once cooled, the cookies are all boxed by hand. Cookies that don’t meet the company’s specifications are thrown out. Finally, the boxes are put into a machine that wraps, seals, and labels boxes that are ready to go to distributors to be sold in stores and supermarkets. What are two ways that the company has increased productivity? Why did increasing the length of the ovens...

...Home-Style Cookies Ashford University BUS 644 Professor Michael Snell August 29, 2011 Briefly describe the cookie production process. Everything starts when management gets the orders from the distributors, which are then scheduled and put onto a list. The list for the day is then given at the beginning of the shift to the person in charge of mixing. The person then checks the master list for the ingredients needed for each type of cookie. The person in charge if mixing then puts the information into the computer and the computer figures out what is exactly needed according to the quantity and the type of cookies needed. The computer then sends the information it configures to the storage silos that are located outside of the plant where the main ingredients are located. All of the ingredients needed are automatically sent to the giant mixing machines where everything is mixed together into a batter. The batter is then put into cutting machines that cut the batter into individual diagonal cookies. The cut cookies are then put onto a conveyer belt that will send them through one of the two ovens. There are some cookies that have filling and those cookies are first filled and folded before they are sent into the oven. Once the cookies come out of the oven they are then sent onto spiral cooling racks 20 feet high and three feet wide. As the cookies are finished with the cooling process workers manually put the cookies into boxes and while they are doing this they remove...

...Home Style Cookies, Lew Mark Baking Company In this case study, the focus revolves around the Lew Mark Baking Company. The Lew-Mark Baking Company according to the case study is from a small town in western New York. Lew-mark Baking company operates in New York and New Jersey. It employs around 200 workers in a mainly blue collar, informal atmosphere. In my paper, I will answer several questions about operations for this company The Cookie Production Process When describing the cookie production process for Lew-mark baking, it is best described as using the batch processing system. The batch processing system can best be described as the execution of a series of programs ("jobs") on a computer without human interaction. “Batch Processing is used when a moderate value of goods or services is desired, and it can handle a moderate variety of products and services” (Stevenson 2009, P 239). This method helps with quantity management because Lew mark only makes cookies according to demand. What are two ways that the company has increased productivity? Why did increasing the length of the ovens result in a faster output? One obvious way the company is increasing productivity is that it only makes cookies according to the demand. What ever order it receives from its distributor is what is made in the factory. This ensures that productivity is centered on the demand and time is not wasted baking products that might or might not sell. This is return, makes productivity quicker...

...Unit 3 P5 Marketing Segmentation Introduction In this assignment I will be discussing different types of marketing segmentations, so what is segmentation? Segmentation is used by businesses to help target their products at the right customers. It is about recognising the specific needs and wants of customer groups and then using this information into providing products and services which meet customer needs. Geographic Companies segment the market by attacking a restricted geographic area. It is very valuable information because businesses can precisely tailor their products mix based on a location, for example, people in Cambridge show a preference for coffee whereas consumers in Lincolnshire tend to prefer tea. This information will allow a tea company to focus marketing its product more up north in Lincolnshire rather than Cambridge. Demographic Demographic segmentation means dividing a market into a group, age, gender, race, occupation and income. For example, Dove created a product for called ‘Men + Care’ which is a hygiene product targeted only for men. Psychographic/Behaviour Psychographic Segmentation is based on personality, values, lifestyle, interests, attitudes, self image or opinions. For example, Ducati is a motorbike manufacturer and may segment its market on the basis of personality variables such as a masculine image, independent, impulsive and fearless. Macbook Pro The MacBook pro is a line of Macintosh portable computers introduced...

...Analyzing Pro Forma Statements Christopher Radko has been in business for thirty years making blown glass Christmas ornaments. They have expanded their line to include snow globes and cookie jars and even a line of jewelry. I propose that Christopher Radko market a new product to their collectors; a home décor line that showcases their style. This line would include throw pillows, rugs, paintings and tabletop accent pieces. Pro Forma statements are hypothetical assumptions of a company for a time span, in this case five years. Taking an already successful company and adding to the line can be both a good idea and tricky because the customer base can split two ways. They can either decide that they love the addition and buy it or become upset at the perception that the company is changing its product line. A pro forma statement can include and exclude whatever the company feels is relevant or irrelevant; onetime expenses are usually not used in pro forma statements either. The pro forma guidelines are not as strict as generally accepted accounting principles. The calculations that were arrived to for Christopher Radko show how the line would be beneficial if it included a new home décor line. It is worth mentioning that the net income does not reflect one time buys therefore the pro forma statement does not reflect that information. While it was not shown in the attached pro forma statement there are companies that write off merchandise to in attempt to manipulate their outcomes...

...Attachment is most common and why is attachment often linked to parenting styles? How is this link of limited correlation? The most common type of attachment is secure attachment. Sensitive, attentive mothers have been found to usually raise securely attached children, while less responsive mothers who often ignored their children, or super-anxious mothers who obsessed over every little thing, were often found to raise insecurely attached children. Now, while most children grew up to be like the above, not all children grew up to be the way it was predicted, because correlation does NOT equal causation. Why was Kohlberg more interested in HOW subjects explained their moral reasonings as opposed to their DIRECT answers of right versus wrong? Because depending on how the child is being raised, what stage they are in, and how they feel that day may alter how they will answer the question. If you ask a child in the preconditional stage to steal a cookie, they might say no because they aren’t hungry and/or “mommy will be mad at me.” this shows that they are making their decision based on how this choice will affect themself rather than because it’s right or wrong, they make the choice based on selfish reasons. Give an example of TWO of the Parenting Styles in action: Authoritarian - These parents value obedience more than discussion about the rationale behind their rules. For example, if you come home 15 minutes after curfew you could quite possibly be locked out of the house...

...taking matters into my own hands, and home schooling him. The process of educating a child can be a daunting task, whether in traditional schools or the alternative, home schooling and charter schools. Everyone will have their own opinion and need to make their own decision about what is the best education path for their child. My son, Benjamin, is in the third grade, he is extremely bright and intelligent. Our problem with the traditional public school system is if a child does not fit in as a “cookie cutter” student and learn the material in the way that it is presented, he/she can fall behind. It is widely known that students learn in many different ways, some learn better in smaller groups, some learn better in an individual setting. Unfortunately, with the amount of students in each class, sometimes ranging between 28 and 34 students; a child can easily be overlooked and labeled as a “slow learner”, “lazy” or “unmotivated”. If teachers were held accountable more often for the success or lack thereof, we might see a change in how these types of students are educated. Charter schools are becoming very popular in the recent years, so much that some charter schools have to hold lotteries and potential students are put on a waiting list in order to attend the school. A parent must research the school to ensure the style of the teachers may work for their children. In the case of Benjamin, my wife and I are choosing to home school. Home schooling also has gained in popularity...
