In addition to the myriad adverse effects the changing environment can have on one’s physical health, there are several examples of the negative effects on mental health. Severe weather events and natural disasters such as extreme floods, hurricanes, and wildfires can cause severe damage and destruction—demolishing people’s homes, communities, and ways of life. Any number of people can be displaced or homeless after a natural disaster, and resources may be scarce. This can generate conflict between those with the means to provide aid and those receiving it, and even lead to a destabilized society or war. The uncertainty that comes from ecological disasters can lead to negative effects on one’s mental health, such as depression and anxiety. This demonstrates different ecological factors that not only affect one’s physical health, but mental and social wellbeing as well. The changing climate of the Anthropocene era has great indirect effects on public health as well. Wednesday, February 22, 2012 Since October 1. Hum. Well, I briefly dated/flinged‐‐flung?‐‐a girl named Belle. Basically the first date went fantastic, which introduced super high expectations, that were later not met. It's entirely possible they were impossible to meet. Belle and I are still friends, though it took a couple months. In the last couple days in Rwanda, we headed back toward the airport. On the way, we visited some orphans and widows, doing missionary work like a cop eats a doughnut. The woman my group met with was 51 years old and had an amazing, tragic story. Her husband was a fisherman and died drowning when she was in her early twenties. By then she had two kids, but her parents and parents‐in‐law disowned her. She couldn't afford the house she was living in, and had no where to go, so she lived, quite literally, under a mat for ten years. The neighbors took pity on her kids some nights and gave them food, some of which they smuggled in their shirts, so that's how the woman survived. There was something about her owning the house they'd lived in, but not the land it was on, and the man who owned it refused to part with it. In other words, deforestation can be defined as the transformation of forest land to non-forest uses where forest land includes lands under agro-forestry and shifting cultivation, and not simply closed canopy primary forests (FAO/UNEP, 1982). However, this definition does not include “logging”. More inclusive was Myers’s 1980 definition, where deforestation refers, “generally to the complete destruction of forest cover through clearing for agriculture … [so] … that not a tree remains, and the land is given over to non-forest purposes … [and where] very heavy and unduly negligent logging … [result in a] … decline of biomass and depletion of ecosystem services … . So severe that the residual forest can no longer qualify as forest in any practical sense of the world.” Alan Graigner (1980, AS quoted in Saxena and Nautiyal, 1997) asserts that selective logging does not “lead to forest clearance and does not constitute deforestation”, whereas Norman Myers (1980, 1993) thinks that logging is crucial because, although it may only affect a small proportion of trees per hectare, it damages wide areas and is the precursor of penetration by the forest farmers. But this right is only the result of a hard fought battle.
