Describing: a. Where was the photograph taken? i. This photo was taken in India and it looks like it is in a hospital or a doctor’s office. b. Look at the subject matter and describe it as clearly as you can. Are there people in the photograph? Is it a landscape? Does it show the country or the city? List as many facts as you can. ii. Even though the subject is so small, the baby is a boy and you can see the parents how happy they are because boys are more desired. The baby doesn’t seem very old but it does have money next to his head which I infer as a gift because he is a boy and shows just how their culture is so wrong. You can see the baby is wrapped in all sorts of blankets and nice warm clothes, when girls from other photos I saw are wrapped in small blankets. c. Look at the elements of design: color, line, shape, value, form, space and texture. How are these used in the photograph? iii. The bright colors in the photo bring out how happy the parents are and their own wealth in the country because everything and everyone looks clean. By having the dad’s hand on the boy, it shows just how small he really is.
Analyzing:
a. What can you learn from the clues in the photo? What draws your eye immediately? Also, look closely at other perhaps less significant, details. What information can they give you? i. That this family is going to have a normal life. The baby takes my eyes first, but then I notice the money next to his head which shows how much this country loves boys. Also the parent’s smiles are bigger than their faces because they know how well their life will be. Also the father has his nose pierced which I find very strange for a man to have his nose pierced with a big diamond in it. b. If there are people in the photograph, what kind of clothes are they wearing? How old do the people appear to be? What do you think the relationships between the people are? What do facial expressions and body language suggest? ii. They are wearing layers, but the colors and choices are very interesting. The mother is wearing a green sweater then a Harley Davidson hat. The dad is wearing all black, and the son is in a blue onesie with a red hat. They seem to be in their 30’s maybe because their skin is wrinkly and it makes them look older. They are a family and they are super excited to be parents of a boy. c. What is going on in the background? Do you see any writing in the photo (signs, or posters, for example)? Are there recognizable buildings or landmarks? What time of day does it seem to be? Think about overall mood or feeling. How do the various elements work together? iii. In the background there is a plastic bag when zoomed in it says “Fixed Prices Shop” so if that is theirs, maybe they are a lower income family and that’s why they are beyond happy to have a boy. Because the boy will bring in more money for the family. Interpreting: a. Can you now say exactly what is happening in the photograph? What is the photographer trying to say; that is, what is the intent of the photographer? Why was the picture taken at this time? Why did the photographer select this angle? i. What I take from the photo is that this family just had a baby and they are just beyond happy that it is a boy because it is more desired. Also the photographer is trying to show how much this country cares about the male gender over females because of the money near his head and the smiles. I believe he selected this angle to show most of the baby and the parents staring, smiling at the boy and not even caring about the photo being taken. b. Consider what is in the picture and what is left out. A photographer uses the boundaries of the photograph as a frame. There is always a conscious decision to focus on some things and leave other things out. How do these decisions affect the meaning? ii. The photographer almost completely cuts out the father of the photo. I believe he did that to make you focus more on the baby and the smile and praise the baby is receiving when he has done nothing.
Evaluating:
a. What do you think about the work? Make a judgment about the value, the significance and the importance of the photograph. What does it add to your knowledge of the subject? i. The work is an alright photo, I say that because you can go to any hospital and take a photo of a new born with their parents and obviously the parents are going to be happy to have a healthy child. Just this family is happier to have a boy instead of a girl. It just really shows how much parents care about having a boy instead of just a healthy child with ten toes and fingers.

Describing In describing the photograph, you must first make note of as much essential, factual information as is available. a. Where was the photograph taken? 1. Either this photo was taken in a studio because of the perfectly painted walls and how clean they are, but further research explains that there is a center for women that are victims of sexual and domestic violence and he wasn’t allowed to talk photos in the center. b. Look at the subject matter and describe it as clearly as you can. Are there people in the photograph? Is it a landscape? Does it show the country or the city? List as many facts as you can. 2. There is a women in the photo and she is missing one arm possibly both but it’s hard to see the other arm because it is a side view. She looks like an older women with her very curly hair and glasses. She is wearing a black tank top or a black swim suit. c. Look at the elements of design: color, line, shape, value, form, space and texture. How are these used in the photograph? 3. He used the dark background and he dark outfit of choice to show how serious the photo should be taken. Also he seems to use artificial light to create a shadow on her shoulder to deceive you that she may or may not have her arm.
Analyzing:
a. What can you learn from the clues in the photo? What draws your eye immediately? Also, look closely at other perhaps less significant, details. What information can they give you? i. That since this photo is about domestic and sexual violence it shows a women that has been affected by it. She doesn’t look sad though, she almost looks angry or determined to get justice or revenge. The shadow on her arm makes your focus to try to figure out if she has an arm or not when she doesn’t. a. If there are people in the photograph, what kind of clothes are they wearing? How old do the people appear to be? What do you think the relationships between the people are? What do facial expressions and body language suggest? ii. The women in the photo is wearing a black tank top or swim suit. My best guess with her age is she is in her thirties. She is the only one in the photo because she was abused by an ex-lover and her injuries were so bad that she lost her arm. Her body language shows that she has some anger built up, but she is determined to live her life to the fullest. d. What is going on in the background? Do you see any writing in the photo (signs, or posters, for example)? Are there recognizable buildings or landmarks? What time of day does it seem to be? Think about overall mood or feeling. How do the various elements work together? iii. The background is just a gray wall or back drop because he really wants you to focus on the women in the photo. It also shows that the subject has a dark story to why she has her injury and he wants you to take this very seriously. Interpreting: a. Can you now say exactly what is happening in the photograph? What is the photographer trying to say; that is, what is the intent of the photographer? Why was the picture taken at this time? Why did the photographer select this angle? i. He is trying to say that people need to understand that violence either sexual or physical in a domestic partnership is wrong no matter if they are married or just dating. That it is still a human being mistreated by another human. He wanted to show what had been done to her but also show her as a person and that she looked just like everyone else. a. Consider what is in the picture and what is left out. A photographer uses the boundaries of the photograph as a frame. There is always a conscious decision to focus on some things and leave other things out. How do these decisions affect the meaning? ii. He left out the rest of her body to really focus on her face and her injury. But he also almost took the photo as a portrait but wanted to show injury when making the photo like a portrait, it shows how normal some people think of domestic violence and how often it can happen without being noticed.
Evaluating The final stage of your decoding is an evaluation. a. What do you think about the work? Make a judgment about the value, the significance and the importance of the photograph. What does it add to your knowledge of the subject? i. I love this photo, it really captures the women showing how strong she is for living without her arm and how she has overcome so much trauma to get to where she is today.

Homework Should Be Banned

...Trouville English CP III 15 December 2015 Should Schools Be Done with Homework? Have you ever enjoyed a day of relaxation? Have you ever experienced the thrill of having a day just to goof off? Has homework kept you away from that? Kids hate homework. Some kids say that homework is just what they learned in class the same day and they are just repeating it. Why do students need to repeat what we did in class that day? Is it necessary? Some reasons why homework is not effective is that many teachers give too much homework, and often teachers do not coordinate the quantity given. Secondly, unnecessary assignments raise the stress level of the students. However, the main argument against homework is that most of it is just boring practice. Teachers give too much homework to kids and it’s not necessary. In an article written by Lance J. Falk it states that “kids have lives beyond school and schoolwork. About 65 percent of kids, ages of 6-13, play competitive sports. But, unfortunately, some of those kids quit playing the sport they love due to the fact that they have too much schoolwork to tackle during their evening” (Falk). If a student has three soccer practices a week, which consumes 2.5 hours of his Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons, how do you think he or she feels? He or she would obviously feel very tired, right? But now if that same student had two hours of homework three of the five days that he or she has school he or she would feel exhausted...

Too Much Homework?

...Too Much Homework? It's all over the news: kids are spending a lot of time on homework. And, according to some, it's way too much. With the current emphasis on high-stakes testing, educators are trying to do more with less, which can result in an overabundance of schoolwork outside of school. Some critics say there is no evidence to suggest that homework is helpful to student achievement; on the contrary, too much of it can overwhelm students and cause them to disengage. Others, however, claim that homework is necessary and helpful, designed so students can practice the concepts taught in class, build good study habits, and reflect on their own learning. As an eleventh grade student who is in advanced and ap classes, I think that homework is the cause of my depleting grades. Now, you’re probably going to think that I’m like any other kid in high school that hates homework and that to even spend another second reading this will be a complete waste of time, right?Even so, just hear me out because I have several reasons that might just change your mind. I have thousands of assignments every week; most of them homework assignments. As a result, I’m cascaded with homework every day, causing me to stay up until 11 o’clock at night more often than not. Obviously, this is a threat to my health as a developing teenager. It could stunt my growth, and result in fatigue and stress because everyone knows that no good sleep leads to no good grades. Even if I were...

If it is stated directly, locate the relevant sentence or sentences. If it is implied, state the thesis in your own words. In my opinion the thesis of Lou’s Place is implied. It does imply that Lou and his customers have an unspoken bond and fondness for one another, even though they belittle each other and the customer pays to pour their own coffee. Lou’s Place is not that place where the service is perfect or the conversation is polite. It is that place where you can be yourself; cook your own eggs and where service is not at all prompt. It is almost as if you are at home with family and friends. You will be criticized before you even find a complement. 2. Which statement would best serve as a topic sentence for paragraph 13? Explain why. I think the best topic sentence for paragraph 13 would be “Regular customers at Lou’s are used to...

Homework Policy

...Homework is an issue that affects both students and teachers on a daily basis. As teachers we must expect great things from our students and for our students to achieve great things, we need them to study and do work at home to help emphasize new information and concepts being taught in the classroom. Teachers must teach self- motivation and actively engage their students to do homework and study on a nightly basis. For students as well as their families homework can often be seen as chore that they must find time for between afterschool activities, their parents work schedules, and just wanting to play. Teachers must find just the right balance of homework to help reinforce what is being taught in the classroom while allowing for family time as well as accommodating the busy schedules many American’s face. Ms. Zalogwe has a zero-tolerance homework policy due to problems with students and homework in the past. She clearly lays out the policy at the beginning of the year and sends parents a handout so that they are also informed of her policies. It is important as a teacher to clearly explain to students as well as their parents exactly what is expected from them. I do believe a teacher should allow for some flexibility in their homework policies, while at the same time teaching self-motivation. Homework should reinforce what is being taught in the classroom and allow for positive social interaction. Homework should accommodate the varying learning levels found in the classroom...

Book Review: the Homework Myth

...Book Review The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing by Alfie Kohn University of Montevallo EDF561: Evaluations in Education Susan Scott Alfie Kohn’s (2006) book, The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing, gave me food for thought. Kohn opposes homework of any kind in any form for any grade level. He explores each commonly given, pro-homework argument in an attempt to persuade his readers, both parents and teachers, of the uselessness and possibly detrimental effects of the long-standing educational tradition. The first claim Kohn (2006) makes is that our children are “missing out on their childhoods” (p. 3). His opinion is that children spend seven hours in school everyday; that should be enough. He argues that kids need more time to be kids. Such time would include family time, friend time, time spent in extracurricular activities such as sports, music and art lessons, and play groups for younger kids. I agree. Kids do need time to enjoy their childhood. It is the most carefree time of their lives, relatively speaking. Does that mean they should have no homework at all? I am not yet ready to agree completely with that attitude. “Does homework improve learning?” Kohn (2006, p. 25) asks. The most significant issue he raises, in an attempt to answer that question, is regarding the kind of homework about which we are talking. Assignments can range from useless, fill-in-the-blank worksheets to extended projects that...

Harmful Homework

...Homework: Helpful or Harmful? Is homework harmful or helpful? In today’s education system, schools are preparing students for college by pressuring them to increase their test scores. Test scores seem to provide educators with a good standpoint of the student’s intelligence level. Therefore, educators have been ordering homework to be done since elementary school. A Countless number of students are being assigned a great amount of homework every day because educators think that it is essential and helpful. However, too much homework has seemed to negatively affect students in many ways. In recent studies, there has been a widespread call to realize the disadvantages of homework due to the strain it puts on students. Although homework may seem favorable because it seems to keep students busy and working, homework should not be considered the primary tool to improve students since homework medically affects students, is time consuming, and interferes with family life. Homework has medical affect on students since they are becoming sleep deprived as they struggle to complete a homework assignment that is due the next day. Studies show that students are now taking more risks due to excessive amounts of homework that cannot be completed efficiently in a given time. According to CNN Health’s Medical Assignment Manager Ann J. Curley, studies conducted show that more than two-thirds of American students report they are getting less than eight hours of sleep on school nights, which is...

Homework Is an Effective Way to Supplement Classroom Learning

...dismayed upon hearing those words from the teacher? Homework has long been a way to supplement students’ learning outside the classroom. This has also kept students busy every night, staring at their computer screens studying or researching about their assigned school work. Homework, in a way, is a good way of maintaing the knowledge students gained from school, but is it really the most effective way of providing supplemental studies? Most studies have shown that homework may be more supplemental than being detrimental to a student’s learning. On one perspective, it has been proven that assigning homework is beneficial to a student’s performance in school. Evidence has been found that homework is an effective supplemental form of learning, and “can impact positively on the retention and understanding of knowledge and can improve study skills...and demonstrate that learning can take place outside of formal schooling,” (qtd. in Department of Education and the Arts 7). This shows that studying should not just be confined to the walls of the classroom, and that after-school learning is vital to reinforce what has been taught by the teacher to the students. Without this reinforcement, students might easily forget the concepts learned in the classroom. Thus, this would result to a poor evaluation performance. This is especially true to students who do not pay attention during Evaristo 2 class time. Because of homework, they would be forced to study the lesson, and soon enough...

Why We Should Homework Be Required Essay

...Since Roberto Nevilis introduced it to the world as a punishment in 1905, there have been many arguments to whether or not homework should be required. What initially started as punishment for kids who messed around in class has become a mandatory task that all students are required to do daily. I’m here to end that, I intend to show you that students should not be required to complete homework for a grade. Homework consumes too much time and leaves no space for extracurricular activities and causes health problems. On top of that, many students don’t even have the resources required to complete the homework. Despite these things, homework is still a graded assignment that if failed to complete, can drastically bring down a student's grade. Consider the fact that the American standards for homework is much lower than anywhere else in the world. CNN conducted a study that showed that on average, in America students receive three times more homework than the recommended amount. 56% of students said that homework is a primary source of stress and frustration. Stress causes a vicious cycle. It can lead to heart diseases, depression, exhaustion, and pain, which in turn lead to more stress....

Limiting Homework

...a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework.” Actress Lily Tomlin is correct. When students get home after a six-hour school day they are often overwhelmed with outrageous amounts of homework. This extra and sometimes unnecessary burden adds only anxiety to the average student leaving them a slave to their homework. This is a problem that can be alleviated with time and patience. Students are not happy with their current homework loads. Sixty-one percent of students in a recent survey concluded that they had to drop out of an activity because of their school workload (Galloway et al 2013). Obviously, homework affects students’ lives more than it should. It is not just something that a student would just finish in five to ten minutes. It takes hard work and brain dedication to finish homework at the time that it is required. One of the reasons that homework should be banned is because it is...
