...Alexis Ivery Peter Dlugos Eastern Philosophy September 29, 2014 If You Don’t Have Anything Nice to Say “Honesty is the best policy”, or at least that’s how the saying goes. For centuries people have been taught that honesty is a trait of high value. While that may be true, when given the chance to keep lying or come clean, more often than not people will choose to hide behind their falsities rather than risk being exposed by the truth. People lie all the time, for self-enhancement or to simply avoid embarrassment or punishment. Growing up, I was always told to be honest; it was strictly enforced in my house. Being dishonest would always result in a consequence; I remember feeling an urge to tell the truth. My parents always emphasized being truthful with them; they even went as far as telling me that when you lie to your parents, you get canker sores. As I got older, of course I lied to them every now or then so I guess my perception of honesty has changed. I believe that honesty is fundamental to building and maintaining any relationship, however there are times when honesty isn’t the best option. I try to be as honest as possible with people but I know that I probably tell the whole truth about 30% of the time. Going into this exercise, I knew that I would have to make a concerted effort to think of different responses I could give people. My first opportunity to test out my ability to tell the truth was presented to me when my mother came into my room to ask...

...Honesty Is The Best Policy Chief Ade was a very wealthy man; he had a daughter named Morenike whom he loved so much. His wife Titi had passed away when Morenike was barely a year old; Chief had to play the role of being a father and mother to his five children. He had loved his wife of fifteen years so much and no other woman seemed able to fill the vacuum she left in his life. Chief never had any formal education due to his poor background; he had struggled and suffered all the way to the top. Hence he vowed to ensure that his children get all the formal education they would require to excel in life. Chief sent all his five children to the best schools in the country. Morenike grew up to be a very beautiful but deceitful young lady, while growing up she was heavily pampered by her older siblings. She knew that she was her father’s favorite and always took advantage of the whole situation. All through her schooling, she was never contended with her allowance, she always had to fabricate lies in order to get extra money from her father. Chief Ade knew of Morenike’s dishonesty especially when money was involved but he wondered why she acted so not withstanding the fact that he had never defaulted in his financial responsibility towards her and had always given her all she ever asked for. Each time Chief confronted Morenike on her behavior, she profusely denied such behavior on her part. Architect Jide was Morenike’s fiancé. Chief regarded him as his son; he...

...Kaitlyn Berger King AP Language and Composition 11/5/15 Honesty Is Not Always the Best Policy Honesty is not always the Best Policy. Lying in denotative terms means deception, however there are times when avoiding the full truth, or even tell a lie, in order to protect someone’s feelings, or prevent a conflict. I believe we all have to lie or even obscure the truth once in our life. White Lies are the definition of these situations. White lies are lies that are not harmful to the people involved in the situation. They serve a multitude of purposes from keeping a child’s imagination alive to building people’s motivation and self-image up. Santa Clause most people from the age 15 and up recognizes these names as just a figment of an imagination. Today I was in the car with my sister. I asked her, “Sophia, who is Santa Clause?” She told me without missing a step that Santa Clause brought her presents. He lives in the North Pole and has pet reindeers. But wait, I thought we just established that Santa was a figment of our imaginations? My sister’s answer was based off of white lies; lies that were fed to her and kids below the age of 15. This type of lying never hurt anybody. In this situation I see no reason why lying was harmful. Although my sister will be sad to hear that her childhood fantasies are not real she will be able to reminisce on the stories she was told about these creatures. My mom told me Santa Clause wasn’t real by writing me a letter. In a nutshell...

...code of conduct may accrue severe punishment in accordance with the institutional policies. To begin with, certified accountant body emphasizes on integrity (IMA code of conduct). This means that the certified accountants are expected to be in their best behavior as far as organizational policies are concerned. Navarro College also expects the students to remain worthwhile students by complying with the dressing code for instance. A decent mode of dressing enhances the students’ integrity and virtues. Misconduct is punishable in both codes of conducts. Navarro College sanctions behaviors deemed as misconduct; in equal measure, one of the core provisions of the certified accountants’ body is competence; failure to live to these competence standards may fall under negligence which is punishable through disciplinary sanctions. Yet another accountants’ code of conduct pillar is credibility. The members should show respect and adhere to the professional credibility provisions; In Navarro College, students should remain committed to their studies and keeping off drugs is one way of maintaining such integrity because the institution has a policy of zero tolerance to drugs and substances abuse; sexual harassment is equally prohibited as seen in the (Navarro College code of conduct). ...respect and show compassion for others, maintain self-respect, and always practice honesty all the time. These steps are necessary to ensure they are model citizens within the community, successful with their education, and future career. In order for them to understand these traits, the example needs to be set at home. Going back to school to finish my education sets a positive example. Since my children are my personal responsibility, then they are also my motivation to excel in college and reach that goal. Children are great listeners and impersonators. When I’m around them, I try my best not to talk in a negative tone, the last thing I need is for them to mimic my bad behavior. Practicing respect is one of the most important traits in teaching your children responsibility. According to Brokenleg (2005) “in order to raise respectful and responsible children, adults must create an environment that meet universal growth needs for belonging, independence, and generosity.” Another personal responsibility is to help my children maintain a sense of self-respect. If they can learn to respect themselves, then they can handle failure. Showing affection and compassion, valuing their input, and their accomplishments, will boost their self-esteem. Engagement in our daily routine and conversation will also help them built up their confident level. This will give them the encouragement they need to do their best at whatever life throws at them. Weather they fear responsibilities, risk taking...

...What is Ethics? Ethics is about values, consistently making decisions to be the best person you can be. Eudemonia is a type of happiness, one that only comes from an active well-being by living virtuously. The career of a CAs(SA) involves a great amount of acquired skills, but also the capacity for others to instill their trust. Trust is a value only placed in people of strong moral principle and integrity. The motto of SAICA is “Integritas” meaning ‘totality’,’ integrity’ and for accountants and auditors integrity is without a doubt a non-negotiable ethical value. It is possible for ethics and values to be non-negotiable. The IFRS has been adopted in over 100 countries, although the same cannot be said for ethics. Even though different countries and businesses around the world are creating and adopting their own ‘Code of Conduct for Ethical Behaviour’, there is no organisation to enforce a Globe Code with international ethical standards to guard public and corporate interest. Without a set of ethical codes, a company cannot presume that other organizations around the world act under the same array of ethical standards and codes as they do, and it could ultimately lead to the diminished merit of financial statements that are prepared using the IFRS. Often people are inclined to go down a road that challenges their ethical values because it appears to be less confrontational, easier than the alternative and more beneficial. People fail to think for the long term, past...

Everyone one values and wants respect, honesty, be cared for and appreciated, and it all can be accomplished with good teamwork. Caring: to have an inclination, liking, fondness, or affection, which I value in showing people every day to show how much you care for them. Honesty: “refers to a facet of moral character and connotes positive and virtuous attributes such as integrity, truthfulness, straight forwardness, trustworthy, loyal and fair.” (Wikipedia.org).
